Every step is explained and clearly shown in the photos. As a beginner, I was so relieved to find a book that gave me such a huge amount of invaluable information. The book goes through the simplest (and cheapest) techniques and tools for sculpting. The projects are adorable and easy to customize so they don't necessarily have to look exactly like what's in the book. I LOVE this book and will use it forever! Review: Amazing! - I love this book. It is exactly what the title says; an instructional book for sculpting realistic animals. So many of the books for sculptors using polymer clay are incomplete and leave you with a product suitable only for giving to your school-age relatives; this manual is absolutely NOT that. It is text-book quality for an extremely reasonable price. Life-Like Animals takes you from the very beginning - Different types of clays available and their properties, tools that are necessary and those that not essential but make life easier, proper baking methods etc. - through refined sculpting and finishing techniques. I purchased this book at the time time as Creating Lifelike Figures in Polymer Clay: Tools and Techniques for Sculpting Realistic Figures and I assumed the section on clay and tools would be the same, recycled for use in this book. Surprisingly, though the intro to clay section is pretty much the same, there is new material in the tools section, including different methods for doing the some of the same tasks and a couple of tools not covered in her other book.

Simple steps to creating animals in clay
Just like Katherine Dewey's book on sculpting the human figure, this book is a simple beak-down on creating animals. I figured it would be fantastic, and I was not disappointed. She breaks down the animals in a simple step-by-step instruction with beautiful illustrations and pictures so that anyone can create their own animal. She is a true artist and a true teacher with a unique gift. I highly recommend this book. Buy it, you won't be disappointed. -Annemarie Wright

Useful, informative and creative but limited to just 10 animals.
I love animals and I love miniatures. Thus, when I saw this book I bought it. It is a creative, useful and informative book and I can't wait to begin making some of the ten (10) animals in it: the deer mouse, the young cottontail, the harp seal, the black bear, the basset hound, the white-tailed fawn, the red fox, the bull frog, the bledgling bluebird and the siamese kitten. This is my only qualm. I understand a book is limited, but at just 128 pages, I feel the author could have added more creatures to make in added pages. All are adorable and realistic looking, except for the black bear. In my opinion, the bear looks a little too cute, not realistic at all. The bear looks more as if he belongs at Disney World as a character at the Country Bear Jamboree. The book is in full color with illustrations and step by step instructions. All in all, I feel this was a worthy purchase, though I didn't pay full price from Amazon and instead went with a market place seller. If you love animals, miniatures, or clay making, I recommend this book to purchase for yourself or for someone else.

True Craftsmanship
Katherine Dewey is an amazing artist that is extremely talented; her book makes me want to start straight away, although I have been too busy recently. Katherine's figures may look simple to follow, but this shows years of practise and her love of clay. A must have book, to encourage those who already can, to get back into sculpting and to those who can't, it gives lots of advice, diagrams and pictures. For example to show how to sculpt a dog she uses 10 pages for the Basset Hound and 10 more pages for the Red Fox. She gives money saving tips on making tools that work and how to make a cheap armature that saves on using too much clay and also keeps the work a lot lighter in weight. Thankyou Katherine Dewey you have made a new fan. I will always keep an eye out for any new book you present :)

Detailed Instructions Lead to Surprisingly Polished Resultsresults
Detailed instructions that are easy to follow and lead to genuinely amazing results. I have never really done any sculpting but Dewey's book was perfect to get me started, without making me feel like it was made for novices. I think the book would be excellent for newbies as well as those with some experience working with polymer. Definitely five stars!

Yipee, easy to use!
This book is great for those of us who want to add animals to the sculpting repertoire! Easy to use and understand, provides a great base for beginning to sculpt lifelike animals. This is the second book I have purchased by this author and I am delighted.

Outstanding introduction to making 3D models in Polymer Clay. Katherine Dewey begins by introducing us to the different types of polymer clay and their properties - saving the beginner a lot of time and money in choosing the right clay. She then explains what tools you will need and how to make them, which keeps start up costs down even more. Dewey also guides you through the scary stuff like how to make armatures and what paints to use. The brilliance of this book lies in the step by step lessons for modelling each project. The images are clear and accompanied by detailed text. She even includes handy diagrams to show how the clay pieces will be pieced together. The projects include; Deer Mouse, Seal, Basset Hound, Fawn, Black Bear, Bull Frog, Bluebird, Siamese Kitten, Fox and Rabbits. Finally she explains how to alter size, position and how to mount them on a polymer clay plinth. In short, achieving professional looking pieces of art are achievable with this fantastic guide. This is a book to treasure for animal modelling enthusiasts.
