what a wonderful story
this is now a part of my classroom traditions. the story has taken on a very important role in our little ones learning to understand time passage. I teach 2 - 4 year olds. I love this book and the illustrations are okay. the most important thing is that the story really is well told and the children enjoy the tale. this book is a treasure to me.

Another Winner in the Chinese Zodiac Race!
Delightful illustrations accompany a well told legend of how the animals of the Chinese Zodiac were chosen. I used this book to compare/contrast with another excellent version of the legend, The Race for the Chinese Zodiac. My third graders really enjoyed both books. I'm glad I bought the two of them!

Fun retelling of the folk tale
My youngest loves this story. She is a rat and I am an ox, so if you know the story, you know why she likes it so much. The illustrations in the book are very nice. I read this book to a kindergarten class, and the kids enjoyed it; I paraphrased a few of the passages to keep the story going as sections of the text get a little more wordy than others. Overall a very fun book that covers the folk tale of how the Chinese zodiac was created and why cat and rat are bitter enemies.

Actually this tale goes back more than a few thousand years....
Before being introduced to the complexities of Chinese Astrology, this tale was told to young children. The "Great Race" is a fun story as to how the animals earned their position in the zodiac. The qualities each showed being a guideline for life's path. e.g. Rat 1st position for being smartA great story for all ages.

Lovely book
Super easy and simple to read. Suitable for 2-3 years old. It is a bit confusing when I have to explain to my son who is 10 about Lunar Calendar and how Chinese New Year doesn't follow the Western calendar. Apart from that, he enjoyed the story.

A good read for youngsters
I enjoyed reading this story to my five year old grandson who is half Chinese. It is also a book which he can read himself and the illustrations are lovely. The story helps him to understand the Chinese horoscope signs (and me too!).
