The substantially revised fourth edition of a widely used text, offering both an introduction to recursive methods and advanced material, mixing tools and sample applications. Recursive methods provide powerful ways to pose and solve problems in dynamic macroeconomics. Recursive Macroeconomic Theory offers both an introduction to recursive methods and more advanced material. Only practice in solving diverse problems fully conveys the advantages of the recursive approach, so the book provides many applications. This fourth edition features two new chapters and substantial revisions to other chapters that demonstrate the power of recursive methods. One new chapter applies the recursive approach to Ramsey taxation and sharply characterizes the time inconsistency of optimal policies. These insights are used in other chapters to simplify recursive formulations of Ramsey plans and credible government policies. The second new chapter explores the mechanics of matching models and identifies a common channel through which productivity shocks are magnified across a variety of matching models. Other chapters have been extended and refined. For example, there is new material on heterogeneous beliefs in both complete and incomplete markets models; and there is a deeper account of forces that shape aggregate labor supply elasticities in lifecycle models. The book is suitable for first- and second-year graduate courses in macroeconomics. Most chapters conclude with exercises; many exercises and examples use Matlab or Python computer programming languages. Review: Lovely graduate level textbook - in good condition Review: Grimoire of Modern Macroeconomics - The title says it already! You can find virtually everything of modern macroeconomics here. This book is actually well-known for a long time, but becomes much more popular after Sargent got Nobel Prize in 2011.

A comprehensive encyclopedia of advanced macroeconomics
An amazing books that covers all the material needed by a macroeconomist doing research either at an academic level or in the public or private sector. The contents are technical and require a lot of reading and solving on your own of course, as the book offers macroeconomic knowledge and skillsets at the highest level possible. All facets of macroeconomics - economic growth, overlapping generations models, search and unemployment, recursive competitive equilibrium models under complete markets, incomplete markets and in markets with and without commitment, fiscal policies and economic growth and finally fiscal policies in complete markets, incomplete markets and in markets with and without commitment are all presented here in extensive models; in addition, the exercises in the end of each chapter are extremely extensive and combine all these different theoretical models in so many different ways that when a student or a professional solves the theoretical models and the exercises he not only gains an excellent understanding of how these models work but can then use and combine all these models in order to build his own models. The only problem this book may have is that although it is hard-cover it can get damaged quite easily both on the cover and on the binding

Too many typos, and not readable as a textbook
Awful. The authors frequently throw around random phrases that are nowhere defined. Maybe okay serving as a reference if you are already an expert in the field, but impossible to read as a textbook. Also, there are way too many typos (and sometimes clear errors) - maybe something like 5 per page. Shocking for a book that is in its 4th edition.

great book
Great book. Very technical, but probably the most comprehensive and authoritative book on macro models and numerical techniques.
