Chicago: The Terry Kath Experience - Special Edition

It's probably unfair to ask me to review this DVD, since I am a guitar player, and have nothing but great respect for Terry Kath. This DVD is a good introduction to the band, Chicago,and a great documentary on their guitar player, and founding member,Terry Kath. Great stories told by members and former members of the band as well as great recordings and concert footage of Terry Kath himself. Highly recommended for Chicago fans, musicians, especially guitar plauers, and fans of documentaries in general.

I sincerely enjoyed this great documentary. Terry Kath’s daughter, Michelle embarks on a quest to know her father, and takes us along for the ride. It is her journey, but you can’t help but root for her to succeed. Michelle makes you feel like you are in this with her to the end. Very well edited and organized. Great interviews with the people who knew Terry, worked with him, and loved him as a friend, a husband, a brother (both literally and musically), and father. Very open, honest, and emotional. You get a real sense of how much Terry means to these people, to this very day. Terry has been called the heart and soul of the band Chicago, but until I saw this documentary, I thought it was because of his musical prowess as one of the most underrated guitarists ever to pick up an axe. I now understand that it was much, much more. I have always believed that artistic expression is not a person plying their craft, but rather an expression of the personality of the artist. Terry’s playing has boldness, joy, creativity, musicality, improvisation, nuance, and subtlety. This documentary shows that so did his life. I remember reading Danny Seraphine’s book “Street Player” in which he talks about how he grabbed Terry’s tour jacket after he had accidentally shot himself and was able to eventually give it to Michelle. In this documentary, Michelle presents a sub-plot of her going on a hunt to find Terry’s number one, a modified Telecaster he used almost exclusively. Hiding for many, many years she finally finds it. Like I said, it is her quest, but she brings us in, and you want her to achieve her goal. I highly recommend this interesting, informative, and insightful documentary. As anyone who has heard Terry play knows, he was highly creative. This experience shows that creativity runs in the family. Well done, Michelle!

I am blown away by the incredible concert footage and the rich collection of old photographs, home movies and interviews. This is the quintessential Terry Kath DVD for every Chicago Transit Authority fan. In fact, any aspiring guitarist will be awed and encouraged by Terry's accomplishments and musical prowess. My sincere appreciation to Michelle Kath Sinclair for directing this fine work and pulling together those musicians from that era who were able to share their personal memories and insights. I was in tears more than once, especially when Terry's wife, Camelia, visited the ranch in Colorado where she lived with Terry. The first concert I ever saw was Chicago performing in Toledo, Ohio in 1971, so I feel a real attachment to Terry and all the members of the band.

Terry Kath was the leader of Chicago for the halcyon period from 1967-1977 during that time his blistering and innovative guitar playing (plus the horns and three lead vocalists) were at the forefront of music. If you listen to their debut record CTA it sounds fresh as on the day of its release. This documentary is long overdue and now we can appreciate what a talent he was writing, playing and singing - he did it all. Terry's demise is covered here and it's a sad tale - even sadder is the decline of the band following his death, and the innovative writing of Robert Lamm consigned to an end of the pier show - and don't get mention David Foster the Simon Cowell mentor of Chicago. Terry was a great and the film from his daughter should now allow a complete reassessment of Terry Kath. The segment about the writing and recording 'Introduction' was superb - that is up there with anything The Beatles gave us. I awlays thought Robert Lamm was the driving force this corrects that. As the film progresses you can see the physical chnages and that his habits were taking their toll. Nice to see Joe Walsh, Steve Lukather & Mike Campbell paying their respects. After watching this a few times you can only imagine where Terry would have gone with his own band and would Mr Lamm have settled for the soft ballads or where TK could have taken him - still would have loved to hear that conversation with TK and David Foster.

As a long-time Chicago fan, it was most interesting to learn more about their fabulously talented guitarist - the late Terry Kath. His only child - daughter, Michelle - headed this heartfelt project, and it includes personal memories from all of his fellow band members, as well as his brother, Rod, and Terry's wife, Camille. Many very touching moments! I got teary-eyes at some of them, especially when Lee and Walt spoke about him, as well as Camille's treasured memories of Terry. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who was a fan of the earlier Chicago lineup (from 1968-early 1978). Terry left them and us (as fans) way too soon - very sad. This DVD helps to keep him alive still!

Very well done background information on this key player of the original Chicago (CTA) band. Terrific. You wouldn't find this depth of info elsewhere, I suspect. Entertaining for a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) / Chicago band fan!!

the reason for the 1 star is NOT for the DVD, the DVD is great but it was a duplicate gift so returned via the UPS store in the allotted time, in the same condition received, unopened, undamaged. Only received a partial (50%) refund with zero explanation as to why. update: after multiple attempts I finally was able to speak to an actual person in customer service and eventually got a full refund, but I will be very wary of purchasing dvd's or cd's from amazon in the future...have been purchasing them for years and have had to return a few and was never charge a restocking fee nor was it mentioned in description or with the return instructions and label.

This is a fantastic documentary from Terry Kath's daughter. It give great insight and personal experiences into Terry Kath and the band Chicago. Loved seeing the home movies and hearing the personal stories. Highly recommend.

The name of the Company includes EU so I thought it was shipping from EU but it’s shipping from USA. So I had to pay a lot of taxes. And the DVD is another region so I can’t play it. So 35 GBP for nothing.
