Amazing taste experience - clearly a coffee bean that has been well cared for
This coffee is, in a single word, fantastic. We drink coffee daily, but not in any large quantity, so when we do make a cup, it has to be great. We prefer to grind our beans right before brewing the coffee as it just yields a better result - and better still, it makes the whole house smell like delicious coffee before the water is even hot.We have tried different coffees from different supermarkets, some obviously better than others, but never any quite as good as this. My wife usually drinks her coffee with milk and sugar - when drinking this, neither is really necessary, albeit, she still prefers it. If you're looking for a way to cut away some calories from your daily life, getting a coffee this good can help you do that.Usually we would not buy into this whole, "shade grown", "volcanic earth" thing that many coffee producers advertise. However, we have been so fortunate as to actually visit Cafe Britt in Costa Rica, and if not the shade or the volcanic earth, they do something right. From growing the beans to slow roasting the beans, to quality control, everything is done with finesse. For the fun of it, we mixed a small handful of these beans with our other preferred coffee bought in a supermarket here, to see if we could tell the difference, just from looks and smell - it took about 20 seconds to sort the beans back in their own piles. The Poas beans glisten (they're not "dry" like most other beans) and they have a deep brown color from the slow roasting, whereas most other beans are near black from roasting, creating a slightly bitter aftertaste. We have also tasted many other variants made by Cafe Britt, and they all live up to the same standard. This really is fantastic coffee.

Delicious!
This makes a very good cup of coffee. I brew using the pour-over method.Roast: Medium to DarkFlavor: Complex, deep, rich & aromatic. Flavors of vanilla, sweet dark chocolate, prune, light smoke. Not very acidic; just enough to keep things interesting through the long finish.Keep in mind that coffee beans are an agricultural product and will vary from year to year.UPDATE 3/6/2014: I have ordered these beans a couple times now & they still make a delicious cup of coffee.UPDATE 6/11/2014: Ordered again & still delicious.UPDATE 5/2015: Ordered again & still delicious.UPDATE 9/2015: Ordered again & still delicious.

My favorite coffee
This is by far my favorite coffee. My parents went to Costa Rica a few years ago and brought this one back among a few others and I've been enjoying it since. The beans aren't over roasted (you can tell this characteristic by how not-oily they look... think a brand that rhymes with CarLucks...;) those are some over roasted oily beans! ) It's never bitter and just a downright good cup of coffee! Reasonable price point too.I used to be one of those people that had a little coffee with my cream and sugar and with this coffee, all I use is a small amount of cream. Sorry, can't quite get rid of that little add on...Do yourself a favor and go get you some!

Darker roast than described. Strong ash taste and smell.
The roast was described as mild by the description on the product page but the indicator on the bag I received lists it as a dark to medium roast. The beans I received smelled of ash and were dark roasted. I did not enjoy this coffee at all. None of the characteristics of the beans were present over the strong ash smell and taste. I usually purchase my beans from a local roaster and have become rather good at judging the age of the beans I am using. These seem to be much older than the beans I normally use. While typing this review I decided to open the second bag, to be fair and thorough, and discovered those beans were not burnt like the first bag but the coffee was still not very good. I would not recommend this coffee.

Love Cafe Britt Costa Rica Organic Shade Grown Whole Bean Coffee!!!
One of the best parts of our trip to Costa Rica was their awesome coffee. I loved their coffee, however upon arrival at home, I just could not get myself to drink the usual supermarket stuff (Yuban and Folgers), nor am I a Starbucks lover. I looked up Costa Rican coffee on Amazon.com, ordered and received this coffee. Smooth, no bitterness whatsoever, no matter how weak or strong you like it; excellently priced; delivery in two days. I have enough to keep me filled up until we leave in February back to Costa Rica to live/retire there. Thanks Amazon for keeping me (coffee) satisfied til then!

Smooth, not acidic
Although I would have rated this 5 stars before, my tastes have been changing and I now prefer darker, bolder varieties. I still like this a lot if I brew it much stronger than usual. I add a good amount of whole milk, so regular strength may be plenty strong and bold for those who drink it black. It is not very acidic and is very smooth. I'm no expert, but I think most people, by adjusting the strength, would be very pleased with the flavor. I like it better than Café Britt's Tarrazu Montecielo (which has been rated very highly by food critics), especially because it's organic. Price does fluctuate, and was very reasonable on subscribe-and-save when coupon was available.

a smooth cup of coffee...
Excellent coffee! I got back from a trip to Costa Rica about 6 months ago, and when I came back, my bags were stuffed with this coffee. I love that amazon has this brand, and it is pretty much all my wife and I drink now. We usually get the tarazzu, but we decided to try this kind for a change. I found it to have a smoother, more earthy taste, and not quite as acidic. We both liked it a lot! Be sure to get a grinder and get the whole bean coffee though, as the taste changes pretty quick with the pre-ground stuff. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Autentic coffee
The coffee is grown, packed in Costa Rica and from high quality, because it is grown in a very fertile volcanic region of the country.
