Great book for the classroom or student struggling on his own,
I have a TESOL certificate (UCR) and speak several languages. Foreign language study and students are not new to me, For several weeks here in Panama, I have been helping in an English conversation class. Without a text and with students at various levels of English, it was quite a challenge. And then I found Ingles Para Latinos. Students can study the book at home, learn at useful vocabulary, and try out new sentence structures in the classroom. Even with the cost of postage to Central America, the book and shipping do not put a strain on the pocketbook. A good command of English here is considered the equivalent of a second college degree. This book means more than just a good and painless way to learn English, It is the key that will open doors in the near future to better jobs and a higher standard of livng.I do not recommend self-study, but the phonetics used in the book come close to having a teacher to help with pronunciation. (As you are aware, there are sounds in English that do not exist in Spanish, and English spelling is so different from how words are pronounced that beginning students must learn their pronunciation word by word. The text, however, does a great job showing how the vocabulary is pronounced.)Nobody in the book, thank goodness, asks if the fountain pen of your aunt is on the table. The examples make sense and can be put to immediate use. The vocabulary is so practical, so useful in real life situations. The author even included hand gestures. There are even games.I wish the book had more indepth conversations at restaurants, stores, churches, parties, etc. A number of students asked for help greeting customers, talking about the "special of the day", giving instructions/directons, etc.Professor Harvey has made the study of English accessible to Latino students while making life a lot easier for the volunteers who use his book.Gracias, mop! (Panamanian slang for "Thanks, buddy!")Boquete, Chiriqui, Panama

An English Teacher's Opinion
When I began learning Spanish in my youth, I made excellent use of the Berlitz self-teacher book. I have been looking for book a that would do the same for Spanish speakers with words written out phonetically for native speakers of Spanish. I tried to approximate this method in our lessons, but it was a slow going, as I had to guess at the best transcription for each sound... a daunting task even for someone who is fully bilingual. I tried looking for exactly what I needed, but was unable to find anything that wasn't either very confusing or prohibitively expensive... until I found this excellent book that is friendly, encouraging, clear, and does a wonderful job making English pronunciation easily comprehensible for Spanish speakers who need a jump start into learning English. My English as a Second Language students are eagerly looking forward to working their way through the first volume and moving on to the next. They are experiencing real measurable success after years of struggling to perfect their English on their own! I would definitely recommend this to any speaker of Spanish who wants a user-friendly program that is clear and affordable. The book includes audio CDs for the learners to listen to and practice on their own, along with lots of helpful tips that speed up English Acquisition for beginners. Well done!

Vamos a Aprender inmediatamente!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a bit disconcerting for an ESL teacher who is not a bilingual teacher touse a lot of Spanish, but poco a poco a Ingles...My student liked the bookand will use it at home and with my sessions...I hope for some suggestions for use although I have several ideas...And will continue to use this series.Spanglish to me is useful to hear...and I think standard Spanish is good to useand know..In English there are so many dialects and idiolects (very local dialects) thata screenwriter or a writer with an ear for language can find variety everywhere. For a second language speaker in English or Spanish, variety can be daunting...And overwhelming, so a good standard is necessary.Mr. or Prof. Harvey writes well and has a good sense of humor and I bet heis in for some controversy including Spanglish in his text...

ESL Fast Track Help
I have been working on teaching an ESL starter course that could be completed in as little as 8 weeks. After a year of research and planning, I have assembled a teaching team and we all decided that this workbook is the best for a fast track ESL course. There is a community college ESL course available in the same town, but this is more of a community service course. We use the audio CDs for part of our in class instruction. Students have the work boooks without CDs. For people who could not sit in class, we offered the text with CD's to take home. Buena Suerte and Good Luck.

Hablando Ingles
The latino students I have love this book. It is what I call "user friendly." So many of the English classes offered to Latinos plunge students into a strange world of accents and spellings that are intimidating to them. Ingles para Latinos helps soften that transition if they can read Spanish. The explanations, avisos and the equivalent pronunciations are really helpful to them. My personal problem with the pronunciations is the "th" sound which is translated to a "d" sound. I instruct my students to make that "th" sound in standard American English so they sound more like a native American speaker.

"This is an example of the most recent and best teaching methods
On a trip north from where I live in Mexico, I picked up this book for my Mexican goddaughter who was then ten. She is now 12 and taking extra curricular classes in English. When she took this book along to show to her teacher he was very enthusiastic and approved her using it in class. The teacher said, "This is an example of the most recent and best teaching methods. I only wish I had enough copies for all my students." I was very happy to have discovered this book in the states!

For Spanish speaking people that want to learn English
For someone that speaks Spanish only and wants to learn English this is an easy way, but does not replace going to English classes but this book would help you out as it would go hand in hand. Would recommend this book.
