Q: will holley red pumps stop running if too hot?

No it should not stop from heat. Fuel traveling thru will generally keep them cooler than the temps that suround them.We run them as assist pumps in farm equipment compartments where it is hot. Low voltage and running dry will be the pumps biggest danger. Fuse it as recommended.

Q: Can pump be mounted horizonally?

No the pump must be mounted vertically per the mfg installation instructions!

Q: Will this work on my 56 T Bird with a312 Y block and a 4 barrel carb & where best to mount it?

Holley Red pump is a good choice fairly stock application like you have. Advantage is you do not need a regulator, gets 5-7 psi for carb just like a stock mechanical pump, and can just plumb the pump inline from the tank to the carb (suggest a point where metal line transitions to 3/8" rubber flex fuel hose and insert it there if there is a good mounting spot). Anywhere where it won't get exposed to exhaust heat (several inches away at least) or like back by the tank or up near the engine compartment is fine. I have it mounted on the frame of my old Suburban but you probably don't have clearance like that. Another good thing is if you don't drive it much and the carb fuel "dries up" the electric will prime the line for a few seconds before you start the car wheras the old mechanical pump might take 15-30 seconds to prime and start. Keeps starter and battery from having to run so much if it sits (unless you just pour some fuel in the carb to get it primed, which works with a mechanical pump). Moving up to more modified/powerful application like >300-350hp or so would probably require a pump with more volume like a Holley blue which does need a regulator for 5-7 psi fuel pressure.

Q: Bought this pump brand new and i can only get 3.5psi out of it is there something im doing wrong?

First ck outlet on bottom 1/4 inch to 3/8 line to filter 3/8 to pump and on to carb. Have fuel press regulator. Have at least 12 volts to pump. Red Holley will pump 7 psi. Have 3 in use all on turbo cars 1915. 2180 2287.
