Maybe worth knowing for first time users.
We’re just introducing our house to the world of ‘Smart’ and these plugs were my first experience. We’re not into going the whole hog on setting up the house, just making some lights and stuff in the house and garden work easier and to a schedule. So other than a couple of Alexa Echo’s to make the things voice controlled we don’t need any fancy hubs or anything. The plugs are small and neat, look fairly well made and once set up seem to perform great and have already made life a little easier and simpler. For those looking at doing this for the first time there are a couple of things that might help you on the way. These particular plugs are rated at 10amps, so careful what you plug into it, the maximum load you can safely put on them in a normal UK house is about 2.3-4 KWs. They won’t take any heavy duty appliance such as a kettle, washing machine, fridge Freezer etc. Not sure why you’d want those on a smart plug but worth bearing in mind. They are ideal for lamps, TV’s etc. The plugs ask you to download the AvatarAP app to connect and set them up, don’t bother. After trying for nearly an hour to get them to connect I gave up, they just wouldn’t have it. Instead I tried the Smart Life app and bingo, was connected within minutes. This app also connected seamlessly to the Alexa’s to control them all. As with most of this smart stuff it works on 2.4GHz wifi. Most, like us, now have fast broadband with a router that is dual band, 5GHz and 2.4GHz. It seems these plugs cannot automatically differentiate between the two bands, so often can’t connect. There are instructions on how to go into your router and change the settings, for example to separate the bands then give the 2.4GHz one a different name to enable connection. Personally I didn’t want to mess around with it, unless you know what your doing I think you could screw it up and lose your internet altogether until you’ve managed to figure out what went wrong and correct it, or paid someone to come out, with BT probably a week later, to sort it for you. Fortunately I found a simple ‘hack’ that worked for me at least. The 5GHz band is fairly short range delivering faster wifi and connects in most of the house. The 2.4GHz band is designed for longer range with a bit of a reduction in wifi speeds. So, simply go out into the garage or shed if they have power and plug it in there to set it up. If you don’t have power just use an extension lead. The idea is to connect the plug up at a distance far enough from the router that the plug can still pick the wifi but will only pick up the 2.4GHz band. Once connected it’s ‘locked’ to the 2.4GHz and you can take it back in and plug it in anywhere you want.

So far so good. Set up is quick
Exactly what I needed. One thing that it does not tell you about connecting the device , plug it in when you are trying to connect. It doesn’t say this so I did struggle at the beginning. Then common sense kicked in and it connected to the Wi-Fi straight away. There’s no remote control for this is as it works off the main. The design is nice although it is rather bulky. Not sure about durability as I’ve only just got mine, but let’s see. Good price so I am hopeful.

Excellent comprehensive product.
Hi. I have 5 of these to date and they do pretty much what I want. Their main use for me is to monitor power rather than switch items on and off and as they don't care which way the current flows, one of them is connected to a grid tie inverter to monitor power production from a 550 watt feed in system. I will be testing one soon on a modified sine wave inverter to see if it it can log that output as well. One unit is on my office equipment and the main PC is on 24/7 monitoring security cameras, the whole system was drawing 4 kWh a day, just under 200 watts constantly. After some testing I found the vast majority of this was from the PC which was about 6 years old, pretty powerful but woefully inefficient. I had another of equal performance but more up to date doing nothing, so I set this up and the whole system now draws 60 watts or so, around 1.6 kWh a day, which will save me around £130 a year. I use the Smart Life- Smart Living app which is excellent, very comprehensive, and that, coming from someone who has written software in the past, is praise indeed. These plugs allow you to turn the unit on or off from the main screen, provide a countdown timer, but beware, once it starts you can't stop it. They also allow you to schedule multiple on and off functions and they provide power consumption logging. The power consumption, referred to as statistics, comprises total kWh for the day up to the time of viewing, the current being drawn, power being used and voltage at the time of viewing. Also shown is the total power used in kWh from the start date of the logging. There is also a graphical display of each months power use showing each days total consumption in kWh. Overall these units provide a comprehensive power switching and data logging service which is second to none.
