Product Description The making of Herbie Hancock's recent crossover hit features John Mayer, Paul Simon, Sting, Carlos Santana, Annie Lennox, Joss Stone, Trey Anastasia and others. .com The notion of keyboardist Herbie Hancock working with the likes of Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, and Joss Stone is bound to give jazz purists the willies. But Hancock, like fellow Miles Davis piano alumnus Joe Zawinul, long ago stepped way outside jazz's strict parameters, and with Possibilities, a DVD chronicling the making of his 2005 CD of the same name, his refusal to be pigeonholed has produced some surprising, occasionally extraordinary musical moments. Duets with Aguilera (a typically overwrought version of Leon Russell's "Song for You") and Mayer (less a tune than a funky, studio-conceived jam) may not be among them, but several of these collaborations verge on genuine brilliance, more than making up for the missteps. A few involve re-imaginings of a guest artist's own material (Paul Simon's "I Do It for Your Love" and Sting's "Sister Moon" both benefit from thoroughly new arrangements with heavy African and Latin touches); some focus on pop-jazz standards (Irish singers Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan's touching version of "Don't Explain," most closely associated with Billie Holiday), while others feature newer songs, like Annie Lennox's gorgeous rendition of Paula Cole's "Hush Hush Hush." Unlikely partnerships with Brian Eno, Trey Anastacio, and guitarist Jonny Lang (who joins Stone for U2's "When Love Comes to Town"), as well as Carlos Santana with Angelique Kidjo, yield uneven results but are never less than intriguing; there's also some all-too-brief footage of the classic Davis '60s quintet (with Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams), as well as recent film of Hancock and Shorter in Japan. Hancock, of course, is the glue that holds it all together, and despite his insistence that this is a not a jazz record, a certain jazzy element in his improvisations and harmonizations is both unavoidable and welcome. In the end, the Possibilities DVD is essentially a promo for the CD--if you want to hear complete versions of these songs, you'll have to buy the record. If that seems cynical, well hey, it works. --Sam Graham

Some people!
Some musicians have a God given gift, Herbie Hancock is a musical savant! I especially the song- “I Just Called to Say I Love You. It was wonderful when I saw the Amazon special but the song alone features harmonica by Stevie Wonder! Pure magic!!!

CD only has 4 tracks
I had ordered DVD and CD. I had already seen documentary so was ordering it for the music on the CD. But there were only 4 tracks. Just wanted people to know, as it wasn't obvious that the CD was limited when I looked at the item on Amazon.

A look back while looking ahead.
This is a beautiful film. Great jazz pianist Herbie Hancock is still open and exploring new realms of music and collaboration. Some great music is made in partnership with his many guests. Really illustrates the recurring freshness of a man who has never stopped learning and never stopped teaching. Not all the partnerships work equally as well, but some are just stellar and well worth the price of admission. Get it - you won’t be disappointed.

An Insight Into Herbie Hancock's Approach to Producing Music
I have several of Herbie's albums including from Maiden Voyage to River: The Joni Letters. What is revealing about this video was the way in which Herbie creates his music. In this video you learn that Herbie is not just a Jazz Hawk, but is always looking to broaden his musical horizon's. Not to many musicians can go from Maiden Voyage to Watermelon Man to Ready or Not and Rockit as convincingly as he has done through his entire career. There's a reason why you can not type cast Herbie Hancock as a Jazz Musician without understanding who he is and his approach to the music that he makes. When I picked this video up I was hoping for a more historic look at Herbie Hancock the man behind "Maiden Voyage" and how he went from Chicago to New York and the West Coast and performing with Miles Davis; however, this video does give you few insights into his start. What Herbie Hancock's video "Possibilities" does cover is the direction that he took when making this album. Overall, light on the background but a number of insights into Herbie and how he approaches music. Possibilities is a good video for those who are fans but I am waiting for the Historical view that covers his upbringing, interests outside of music, and his persona.

Serious musicians should see this DVD
Not for everyone but any serious musician should see this DVD, it has some great live studio video of the artist's and Herbie's magic fingers and great arrangements and the way he is so open minded that he can bring the best of rock, blues, funk, even folk into his eclectic mix.My Favourites: "When love comes to town", Hush,Hush,Hush (heartbreaking) , Don't Explain, Stitch Me UpThe Music CD is superb as it has the finished versions of the songs,Just watching these top notch studio musicians create the magic is a gift most people never get to see, especially Steve Jordan the best live and studio drummer around IMHO, rock, jazz, folk, funk, fusion he just nails it 100%,Wonder why your band just doesn't sound tight, it's probably your drummer who became a drummer because he has absolutely no musical talent. at all. All the really good drummers are also great all around musicians most of them can play pretty good piano, guitar or sing like a bird.

A lesson in the creative process from a master
Herbie Hancock is a genius. I came across this doc at a friend's house flipping through cable. I am a visual artist/designer, but the creative process doesn't vary despite the form. These are not videos but exactly the genre of the film, a documentary. This is a documentation of how the auditory version of, "Possibilities," was made. It is amazing and beautiful to see how these varied artists create. Although Hancock tries to create a journey with the culmination in Japan, I didn't find this part of the doc that compelling. I feel the true story is about a process we all encounter to achieve things, whether it is a life long journey (as highlighted through his whole music careeer) or an momentarily challenge (the making of this record.) It is an inspiring glimpse into the creative process. I have seen this movie about five times now and cannot wait to watch it again.

not full CD
i watched this movie through netflix's online streaming capabilities several months ago. i absolutely fell in love with Lisa Hannigan's music because of this movie. the movie itself is worth a watch especially if you're into pop music. i'm not much of a pop fan myself and watched mostly because i respect Herbie Hancock as a jazz pianist. it really pretty neat to see modern musicians take on some of these songs and use their talents in a different genre. the movie itself i would give 4 stars. my problem with this set is that the CD that comes with it isn't the Possibilities CD. it's only a rough mix of 4 songs. the price when i bought it was pretty cheap and my thought process going in was, "i'll pay this much just to have a CD quality version of Billie Holiday's 'Don't Explain' (performed by Herbie Hancock, Damien Rice, and Lisa Hannigan.) and the DVD will be a bonus." but the CD doesn't have the song and i don't really want to buy the Possibilities CD for one song. i didn't pay that much and so i don't really feel like i was ripped off, but to advertise this set as "Herbie Hancock: Possibilities DVD/CD" is very misleading. thus 2 stars.

A great Insight
This dvd definately makes a musician like me - and all other people with an interest in music and arts - feel blessed, enlightened and happy. With the fact that we have a musical and human soul like mr. Hancock. Clearly a man with no age - just pure and simple talent and experience, which he uses to explore otherwise well-known tunes. In the interesting company of several of today's best performers, he evolves new interpretations and makes wonderful music. The dvd is well shot, well produced and with good sound.A must-have for any musical soul.

a jazz master jams with other artists
The iconic Herbie Hancock collaborates with a surprising array of other musicians in this collaborative effort. From Christina Aguilera to Carlos Santana, this DVD shares the creative process in the development of the CD. A great view for musicians, artists, and creative types in general.
