The Martial Art of Horary Astrology

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story
First, if you're looking for some kind of step-by-step approach, you can forget it. Step one, basically, is to figure out which "step one" you want to use! Should you use the ascendant itself to represent the querent (the person asking the question), or the ruler of the rising sign, or the almuten of the rising sign, or a planet in the first house, or even the moon? Then the trickiest part, as the author says, is to figure out what house to use for quested (what the question is about) -- the significator of which could be the house itself, or its ruler, or its almuten, or a planet in that house. If you like flexibility, you've got it; if you're hoping for something a little more well-defined, forget it.Second, I'd like to quote the author (p. 10): "Without your own examples, this book is useless to you." I'm inclined to agree. This book leaves me with the impression that doing astrology means building your own system of interpretation. Sure, this book can give you some ideas-- but the way it seems to "work" is, you look at a chart, then a hundred things flood into your mind based on stuff you've read or seen before, and then you use whatever pieces help you make the best story for the present question. The author herself nearly admits to doing this herself -- for example, on page 91 (Example 11):The question is, "Was my husband lying to me on the phone when he said he hasn't cheated on me during our marriage?" Early in the interpretation she sees Jupiter in the first house and says "Now I'm sorry folks, but mythology sometimes intrudes on my consciousness, and this was just one of those times -- it seems every myth of Jupiter involves him making love with anyone but his wife Juno!" She goes on to read the chart and conclude he was "lying through his teeth." On the other hand, she had to use the time of the phone call plus the husband's location to get this result -- saying the chart was too difficult to read otherwise -- and not the location of the person asking the question, which is what you're "supposed" to do. Which calls the entire reading into question! And if we're free to switch locations, why not switch the actual question to the person at that location? The man must have been wondering something like, "Is my wife trusting me when I tell her this?" Looking at the same chart in this new way, I can see outside forces moving in to his twelfth house to mess things up for him -- the twelfth house being the house of hidden enemies, such as the wife's astrologer (say). One can also look at dignities and receptions and see that the husband truly values his relationship with his wife, but she is more aloof and adrift in her attitude towards him. Is his wife just looking for some kind of excuse to separate from him? Can astrologers be sued for malpractice if they make incorrect statements concerning marital fidelity? So you see how this works -- you take advantage of the built-in vagaries and ambiguities in order to come up with something so good that the client comes back for more. Then there's this gem on page 99 (Example 14):The question is, "Will there be a magnitude 8.5 or higher earthquake in southern California on May 10, 1994?" Her first comment is: "This is what we call a $50 no, meaning you charge more than usual and then say no." (Looking at the chart, of course, to make sure there are no really strong indications of a yes -- we mustn't be THAT sure of ourselves.)Why am I giving two stars? Because it did help me understand what is happening out there, even if I'm not much impressed.

An excellent *second* book on horary astrology
Lehman has done a wonderful job of cramming much of what you need to know to do basic horary astrology into a single volume. But she does assume that you've learned something about traditional astrology already. So this book does not explain general concepts or vocabulary in much detail (there are appendices and a glossary in the back, but the beginning student may want more before tackling this book). This is an excellent text to refer back to. Lehman has taken the sensible step of organizing her examples by the house you use to answer the question. Not only does this help you find the rules later, but it ensures that there's a few examples for each house (unlike other horary books that give you several examples of a few kinds of questions and leave you guessing wildly on other subjects). Lehman gives almost 100 examples in this book, each explained fairly completely (that's where the bulk of the instruction comes from: most concepts are mentioned during the explanations and aren't in stand-alone chapters).

Best book on a subject.
Lee Lehman book is one of the best book on the subject of horary astrology. Both beginner astrologer and an advanced practitioner will benefit tremendously from the book. Book is very well organized , well written, deep and contains a lot of examples. Lee has amazing ability explain complicated astrological subjects in a very easy to understand woods. If student can have only one book on a subject of classical astrological and horary Lee's book will be the perfect choice.

Martial Horary astrology
Modern Horary astrologers only give a yes or no answer to every question, the rest is bla, bla, bla,. To have that answer to my questions I don't need to spend my money and my time making charts, going trough all the rules and interpretations. I don't see Horary astrologers in modern times of the size of Lilly and IVY Jacobsen.

very helpful
Lehman has put together a well-organized and helpful book with many examples. I own two other horary books and this one is the best.

Great introduction to horary
I liked that the book is graded. Also most chapters have lengthy quotations from such classic authorities as Lilly and Culpepper.
