A Beautiful Story
And a perfect cast

... Well above my expectations
I watch a Lot of movies and can be harsh, but also try to be fair in my reviews; if I feel I cannot give a fair and unbiased review, then I don't bother writing one. I feel compelled to write this review. As for the actors: William Hurt - historically, I personally have felt he has been overrated and shot to stardom after his performance in "The Big Chill" (1983). Just my opinion, but he has always seemed to be a very limited & narrow actor, who has only been capable of maybe 3 facial expressions & 2 voice inflections. However, William Hurt was cast perfectly for this movie and did a great job. Kristen Stewart & Eddie Redmayne - Two young actors who obviously work hard at their craft - and it shows. I think we will see great things come from both of them throughout their lifetime. Maria Bello is a natural beauty - she did an awesome job and was perfect for her role as "May".This was a simple, yet curious movie which kept me interested and guessing how this was going to pan out. Each of the characters were intriguing (and likeable) - in their own way. This story was such a relief from the same old (or new) dazzling, high-tech, high budget movies. Just a nice little gem that definitely rose well above my expectations.

William Hurt portrayed an amazing character
I never for a moment doubted he was the man he portrayed. A man of incredible depth of pain, sorrow, and loneliness, who believed he deserved the life he was living. More things happen.

Blu-ray Disc Wrongly Classified
If you buy this title in the Blu-ray format, you are bound for a pleasant surprise, cause what you get is not the William Hurt, Kristin Stewart version but the original Japanese picture directed by Yamada Yoji and starring one of my favorite actor, Takakura Ken. It has English subtitles and includes a small pamphlet introducing the film. I kind of expecting this as the picture shows the Japanese scene with the Twilight Time notation on it. With the specification of the Disc wrongly described and all the commentaries referring to the English picture, there is no way I could tell which item I was buying, but I haven't got the William Hurt version and decided that it's a risk worth taking. This Japanese version is truly one of the best picture by director Yoji, in case you enjoy the English version you would not be disappointed by this one.

Best road movie and it has Eddie Redmayne!
In the days of The Expandables action movies or FX fantasies, The Yellow Handkerchief is a real gem of pure humanity and emotion. In this road movie, 2 teenagers travel with an ex-convict, and they are just 2 empty vessels eager to be filled by the life experiences of William Hurt and build their future adulthood.William Hurt's character has a lot to rebuild too, and his acting is magnificent all along. The 2 teens are Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne, who are also transforming and learning about themselves and relationships with others at the same pace as the road trip. There is a good feeling from the start of the movie and a nice progression till the end. Eddie Redmayne is particularly shining as a modest character, just like he is in the current The Pillars of the Earth series.Definitely the best coming of age and road movie for a while. A long while, since it was first shown at the Sundance festival over 2.5 years ago, and still no DVD on the horizon.

Good as tie a yellow ribbon but better
The story was good with flashbacks. Hurting people need people with compassion and forgiveness when it is sought. That's what makes life worth living. You can find that real love through Christ! The trust was gained between the main characters when they became vulnerable to each other. And they received a relief from guilt and freedom from their past. That is what Christ will do no matter what you've done. You will be free indeed! Go talk with a born again follower of Christ to learn the whole beautiful story!

Review without Spoilers - Pros & Cons
The Yellow Handkerchief is a 2008 American independent drama film staring William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart, and Eddie Redmayne and directed by Udayan Prasad. The film is a remake of the 1977 Japanese classic of the same name. Here are the pros & cons of the film as I see it, I hope this helps.Pros:1. Some of the cinematography of the buildings and starkness is interesting.2. The acting overall is very good.Cons:1. Not a bad story, but it never really drew me in, I never really felt much interest in the characters other than Martine (Kristen Stewart) who I just felt sorry for.2. This film didn't do anything for me, other than to remind me that most men are just plain stupid, disrespectful of women, and violent in my opinion.

Great Characters, Great Actors
As another reviewer mentioned, this film doesn't depend on excessive action sequences and special effects. I grew up watching old movies on tv and love films that depend on character development, dialogue, and good actors. This film filled these criteria well.I was especially intrigued by Eddie Redmayne. I had seen him in Birdsong Masterpiece Classic: Birdsong and he didn't overly impress me, but he really excelled in this part. He plays the goofy young man so effectively. He immersed himself in his portrayal of Gordy so much you would never guess that he was educated at Eton and Cambridge. The other two primary actors were very also good. William Hurt always performs to a high standard. I found his protrayal of Brett to be sensitive, compassionate and strong. And no other actress plays the conflicted young woman as well as Kristen Stewart. It's unfortunate that this film isn't better known. It is a touching story, well acted.

Beautiful movie but really bad DVD!
This movie is just beautiful! Maria Bello is wonderful (as always!) and William Hurt is definitely doing great there too! The story is very loving and moving, flashbacks and reality are perfectly intertwined. Loved it a lot! BUT I had to buy the DVD from somewhere else because it was listed as "good" except that I hadn't been able to see past the first 5 minutes of the movie... the DVD is not "good" it is scratched! So I have lost $12...

Yellow Handkerchief
Slow paced, beautifully filmed on location i Louisiana, kinda road movie. The cast is excellent especially William Hurt and it's also good to see Kristen acting. The story is believable and engaging. It's nice to see the struggle for love in a realistic drama with good dialog. Three lonely strangers each with problems of their own set off on a trip to New Orleans for different reasons. As one is struggling to connect again with his former girlfriend ( Maria Bello ) after the serving a prison sentence as consequence of the trauma of loosing an unborne child, the other two are slowly seeking the support of each other. The young girl ( Kristen Stuart ) feels unwanted of everyone and just wants to get away while the boy ( Eddie Redmayne ) just wants to see some more of the world. I can really recommend this movie.
