SUUNTO Core Series Outdoor Watch

It is very nice as a classic hiking watch. My wrist is very thin relatively, still it fits great and very comfortable. It seems a bit pricy but easy to use it for your hiking.

I bought this watch to replace a 10+ year old Suunto Vector. I expected Suunto quality and features to match or exceed the Vector. The reality is that there are more features than I expected. For 1 the screen can be brightened or darkened . The face is cleaner, seems bigger, and is more customizable than before. The watch is very clean looking wand no as thick and clunky as the one it replaced. The critical features are still there, e.g., compass, altimeter,, barometer, and alarm. And best of all the price is relatively the same as the Vector was but in cheaper 2026 dollars. Highly recommended.

This is a fantastic watch for any outdoor activity and everyday use. As an avid hunter, I like the fact that it has the compass, barometric pressure reading and the ability to see the day’s Sunrise and Sunset times for my region. These functions, and many more, make it perfect for anyone who enjoys outdoor sporting activities.

***UPDATED*** First Review: I recently had a malfunction: the stopwatch function “froze” and I can’t reset or get out of the “time” mode. I just checked and am beyond the Amazon return window (purchased in May, return window expired in June…it’s now late July). I’ve read a ton of reviews that say the company doesn’t stand behind their product. The jury is still out in my case so let’s see how they respond. I’m not going to mention my occupationS or experience, that is reserved for review #2 after I see how they respond. For the record, I also own an MC-2 Compass (made by the same company) and it’s world renowned, so I have high hopes they do the right thing. We shall see, more to come. July 23, 2022 Review #2 (September 18, 2022): It’s a good watch! I’m in Law Enforcement (Highway Patrol & Marine Unit), so I NEEDED a good watch. This one is hard to read at night (small numbers/characters and low backlight brightness), the included “Quick Guide” (all FOUR of them) only tell a small part of the story of this watch. To fully understand its capabilities and how to use it effectively, you’ll need that quick guide and all 33-pages of the user manual that you’ll have to download from their website. When I said “and”, I literally mean you need them BOTH (photo attached) to understand how to use all of the functions because neither does an effective job explaining how the thing works! I’m my first review I mentioned a malfunction. Well, it ended up being operator error on my part because I literally didn’t understand that it had gone into locked mode AND I couldn’t see the teeny, tiny little padlock icon that said it was in locked mode! Did I mention it’s hard to see/read? That became even more challenging because I had accidentally changed the language to something other than English and what little chance I had to recover was totally gone once it changed to some other language. If you wear glasses, be sure to use them whenever you’re setting or using anything other than the most basic functions (cycling through date, sunrise/sunset, stopwatch, timer, compass, altimeter, barometer). The user interface isn’t user-friendly or even intuitive so prepare to start memorizing which buttons perform which function when you’re doing anything other than cycling through available menus. Again, it’s a good watch…very good even! I returned it for repair and they promptly returned it with the explanation that I didn’t know how to use it (those are my words, they were much more polite and professional…thanks to them for that!) I was so frustrated when it was stuck in locked mode that I bought an Ironman (100m waterproof model) on-sale for $39.95. I can actually read and manipulate its functions at night, without reading glasses and the buttons are ultra-intuitive!!!! Sure it doesn’t have a compass, altimeter or barometer but for a basic rugged watch you can see (even at night without glasses or a magnifying glass), it’s kinda hard to beat since I swim often and waterproofing really matters. This Suunto cost $125 on Amazon and it’s a better watch than the Ironman I just mentioned simply because of its highly advanced capabilities. Just be prepared to do a ton of learning to use it effectively and efficiently in the field! I give the Suunto Core All Black a solid 4-Stars for quality, aesthetics, capabilities, and durability. The manual(s), display readability, and intuitive user interface all SUCK but I’m only going to dock them 1-Star for all of those because they should be easily correctable. …it’s a very good watch!

This is my 3 one over 20 years and they fixed the major problem with a metal battery cover instead of a one time use back.

The Watch Itself Is Good, but the Overall Quality Is Disappointing If you ask me whether this is a good watch or a bad watch, I would say the watch itself is good. However, when the watch band fails after only one year, I cannot consider the product a good watch overall. That is why I gave it only one star. Even more disappointing, the plastic part around the watch case began to discolor in less than a year. Before purchasing this watch, I had been wearing a $30 Casio I bought at Walmart for about 10 years. That Casio has had virtually no problems. The band finally broke after eight years, and it was replaced. The watch itself is still working perfectly today. I have not done anything unusual with this watch. I used it for the same normal, everyday activities that I did with my Casio. So why did the Casio last for 10 years with almost no problems, while this watch developed multiple issues in less than a year? I contacted customer service about these problems. They told me that because the watch band failed after one year, it was no longer covered. Regarding the discoloration of the plastic part attached to the watch case, they said they had not seen any particular problem with their Jazz products and therefore considered it an issue on my end, so it was not covered either. This experience has made me regret choosing and purchasing this watch. If you are considering buying this watch, I would recommend looking at a Casio or Garmin instead. Based on my experience, I would not purchase this watch again.

I waited for quite a while to buy this Suunto Core as I wanted to see if the Apple Watch was something that would interest me. It wasn't. This replaces a Casio Pathfinder that I wore for about five years. After two months of ownership, I am now writing a review as I think I know enough now to relate an educated experience. First off, the looks: This is a really, really gorgeous watch. It makes the Casio look like very clunky in comparison. It's lightweight (more than I expected) and is extremely comfortable to wear. I did switch out the band for the optional Suunto black rubber/aluminum one and think the look and comfort improved even more. The original band had a "brittle" feel and it was either too big or too small for me with the adjusting holes available. The optional band's satin black aluminum lugs and matt black rubber sheen really works with the highly polished lens, the matt black case and the satin black bezel. I added photos to show the difference in appearance. Also, if you opt for the other band, the screws that fasten the crossbars are teensy and have been reported as easily lost. I used Loctite when installing mine. I thought the contrast was a bit low as shipped so bumped it up a few notches. That has a tendency to reveal some of the LED zones as they show up a bit lighter than the surrounding black mask, but it's a tradeoff in the ability to see the time. The battery life has started out badly as I received the watch on 4/29 and had to replace the battery on 5/18. Hopefully that was due to being powered up in inventory for a while before I got it. I'm going to keep track of changes to see what the trend is like. Changing the battery is easy and is best accomplished with a coin (I used a US nickel since it's the thickest). It uses one inexpensive and readily available CR2032 3V coin cell. Edit: I finally had to change the battery 16 months after installing the new one on 5/18/15 so no real complaints with battery life. The operating system is very easy to use (much more so than the Casio's). I really like the "guide ticks" that show up around the dial to indicate which buttons are active in each mode. I keep the watch locked in barometer mode for day to day wear. This has a tendency to trigger the storm alarm constantly so I turned that off. It was getting irritating. The stopwatch is the biggest disappointment as it is way too small and shows up as a sub-display of the time rather than having its own screen. If you are hoping for the big stopwatch like on Denzel Washington's Suunto in "The Equalizer" you will be disappointed. From what I have read, those displays were digitally added to his watch for the movie and Suunto did not do a special firmware for him as reported in several places. I would really love to see Suunto offer a firmware with a large stopwatch mode. I have not had much occasion to use the compass, but it's easy to activate and will be useful on hikes. The temperature function is useless unless you remove the watch and let it stabilize on ambient temperature instead of your arm temperature. Mine usually reads 82 degrees F. So to sum up, I'm extremely pleased with the All-Black Core. If you track the prices, they will dip to around $200 from time to time so if you are patient you can save enough to buy the extra band.

Here are my thoughts on my new Suunto Core, hope this helps others decide if this is the right watch for them or not. Overall I love the fit and finish of this watch, I have the Military All Black edition. The bezel is low profile which allows it to easily fit inside the cuff of a shirt and also less prone to striking on door jams and the like as you walk. The watch is lighter than I had anticipated, but does not feel light in a cheap kind of way. I was initially a little bummed about the lighter weight because I normally where very large and heavy Invicta watches. However the lighter weight of this watch makes it far more useful for being active which is what this watch is all about. The lighter weight also means you can wear the watch higher up on your arm where it belongs and it will stay there. That way its not impinging on your hand while extending the wrist (say while riding a bike.) The band is a smooth matte hard rubber and has a matte black aluminum clasp. There are also two rubber cuffs to tuck the excess band inside, this is very nice as it keeps the excess band out of the way of what you are wearing and what you are doing. The watch itself is very comfortable as a function of both the band construction and the overall weight of the watch. My favorite part of the overall look of this watch however is the dark face. It's clean and sharp; you can choose which information you would like displayed by default (time, altitude, bearing, sunrise/set, date, countdown, etc). In very bright light and with the watch tilted at an extreme angle it can be difficult to see the information on the display, however with the watch pointing directly at you, I have no issues reading the display even in full sunlight. At night the display is completely dark, except for the glowing North indicators on the rotating bezel. The backlight feature (activated as needed with a button press) lights up the entire display so you can see all functions and feature of the watch including indicators such as the alarm being set. Another nice little feature is a button lock, achieved by pressing and holding the backlight button for a few seconds, handy so that you are not accidentally accessing menus or changing settings inadvertently while you are asleep or wearing gloves. In terms of the altimeter/barometer, I have always wanted this watch for skiing purposes as it gives you a way to track your vertical feet for the day without having to pull out your phone and check an app like EpicMix. As I have yet to ski with this watch I cannot comment on its ability to track vert just yet, however many other people I know with this watch have been pleased with its ability to do so. It does give me accurate readings of atmospheric pressure which has been interesting to follow. These past few days we have had some decent storms roll through and I have actually watched the barometer drop as that was happening. It displays the pressure in a graph so you can see trends over time. The reality is that I would not routinely use this to try to predict or gauge the weather - in this day and age I can get vastly more detailed information from my phone. That being the case the barometer is accurate and functional. The thermometer does a great job of telling me the temperature of my wrist but not the ambient temperature (at least if I am wearing it). I knew this was going to be the case before I even purchased the watch as this is a common theme with all "ABC watches". The reality is there is no way for the thermometer to account for the conductive heat transferred to/from your body (or radiation from the sun for that matter). Again, if I need to know the ambient temperature I look at the weather app on my phone but if I was in an area with no cell signal that would not be an option. In that event you can always hang the watch from your pack or inside your tent to get an accurate reading on the ambient temperature. The thermometer is accurate, you just need to take your wrist out of the equation when you need that information. The compass feature works great though I personally don't see myself using it routinely. I have compared it to the lensatic compass in my pack and its relatively close but if I ever actually had to navigate I would definitely use a dedicated compass. In my humble opinion the compass function on the watch is more convenient for getting a general idea of your bearing or heading - something I usually am aware of already but I can appreciate how this might be useful if you are traveling or exploring in a new area. Another great feature of this watch is the sunrise/sunset information. While programming the watch you select your nearest major city and that is how the sunrise/set times are calculated. This gives you a relatively accurate prediction of the time at sunrise and sunset but depends obviously on if you are in that exact location or not. As I am in Milford, CT I have mine set to NYC. The watch tells me that sunset today will be at 19:48 where as according to a simple google search it will be at 19:42 for my current location (unsure of the source that is being indexed though). In any event, it is close enough and reliable for the purpose of gauging your activities by the need for daylight or night. As expected there are also the typical watch functions of chronograph with lap metering and an alarm. The alarm actually also has a snooze feature which is pretty nice. As the alarm goes off a notification on the display says "snooze?" and places "yes" and "no" next to two buttons on the bezel. Selecting yes gives you an extra 5 minutes of sleep. I am unsure if you can change the duration of the snooze in settings or not. There is also a countdown timer which comes in handy sometimes. You can set the duration of the countdown to anything you like in the settings. Another nice feature is the product support offered by Suunto. The day I received the watch I got on the website and made a user account then registered my serial number. From there I can submit work or repair orders should anything ever go wrong. There is also a nice user community for sharing information and activities, something I won't probably be an active member of but I am sure there are others who really enjoy this aspect of the brand. I really have no gripes or problems with the watch to report so far. I have only had it for 2 weeks and I am very pleased with my purchase. I have read other reviews noting problems with the band breaking. The band seems solid to me but certainly does not feel indestructible. I am sure with enough repetition of folding the band back to remove the watch it would ultimately crease and then crack as others have reported. At this price point I expect this to be a watch that I get many years of solid use out of. If for some reason the band starts to get too terribly worn or breaks I would be okay replacing it. I do not believe the Suunto warranty covers band damage from normal use. It appears replacement bands for the Core are available for around $30-40 which is reasonable in my opinion. It appears the band can be replaced by the user, and judging by the look of the screws attaching the band to the watch body you would only need a small flathead driver. Also of not, the watch battery can be easily replaced by the user. So in summary, all in all I am very pleased. The watch looks fantastic. The watch is comfortable to wear both at rest and while working out or being active. The altimeter/barometer are accurate and give you ample ways to display and use the data. The thermometer works great, you just need to take the watch off to get an accurate reading (true for all watch thermometers as far as I know). The compass is accurate for getting a general idea of your heading but if you are planning on doing serious navigation then use a dedicated compass. The other standard watch features (alarm, chrono, countdown) are all present as well as few nice bonuses like a countdown timer, snooze function for the alarm and sunrise/set times.

Orologio stupendo in ogni suo aspetto! I sensori: Bussola: una volta settata (girarla su se stessa per una 15ina di secondi) è precisissima e i tempi di refresh del dato sono rapidissimi. Altimetro: Sensore affidabile, ottimo nei calcoli dell'altitudine e il tempo di refresh è di 1sec. Ha una risoluzione di 1m, quindi la precisione è assicurata. Inoltre ha un logbook fatto veramente bene, e si riesce a vedere i metri di dislivello o di semplice altitudine alla fine di una escursione. Questo altimetro è perfetto per tutti gli amanti della montagna, ad esempio trekking, alpinismo, scii, kayak, parapendio e persino molti skydivers lo indossano. Barometro: funziona benissimo, ed ho trovato incredibilmente comodo il grafico, in quanto ti da una vaga idea delle prossime condizioni meteo, e credetemi che se il grafico cala a picco, di li a poco arriverà una tempesta! (quanta ne ho presa quella volta!). :D Inoltre la funzione alti/baro è utilissima. Termometro: quest'ultimo da un po di problemi perché il calore del corpo influenza la rilevazione della temperatura, quindi darà sempre 4-5 gradi in più, poco male, basta levarselo e dopo 10min si ha la temperatura ottimale. Profondimetro: questa è una feature molto carina, infatti riesce a rilevare fino a 10m di profondità. l'ho provato ed è molto preciso! Funzione alba tramonto: ti consente, una volta impostata la città più vicina, di sapere l'orario di alba e tramonto del giorno. Il look è elegante ed è fighissimo al polso (tutti te lo guarderanno e ti invidieranno). Per il fattore luminosità c'è da spendere qualche parola in più: appena l'ho acceso per la prima volta ho detto: ma che ca**o è sta luminosità?! Mi avevano detto che era debole, ma davvero così tanto?!? Minghieee... Poi invece dopo neanche 2 giorni mi ci sono abituato e ora lo vedo BENISSIMO in ogni condizione di luce, che sia all'aperto o al chiuso una volta fatto il callo riesci a vedere i dati della schermata senza problemi. Io ho il contrasto settato su 8. C'è da dire che il tono dei numeri è abbastanza debole questo è vero, ma si fa più fatica a vederlo solo quando sei in condizioni di buio o semi buio, e in quel caso usi la retroilluminazione (colore verde acqua che da un effetto bellissimo) e con quest'ultima accesa è possibile la navigazione tra le varie schermate, feature che un Casio non ha. In oltre al buio si illumineranno i due segnetti della lunetta direzionale (effetto azzeccatissimo). Comodissimo il cinturino, forse un po troppo sottile e probabilmente con il tempo si usurerà e tenderà sicuramente a rompersi (spero piu tardi che mai). 220euro spesi benissimo!

Typical Suunto, if there is such thing. This is my second Suunto and so no surprises on my part. Well built, quite rugged and all around easy to wear. This is a larger watch but not ridiculously large. I like larger watches so that does not bother me. Easy to read even at dusk. Backlight is a bit dicky (can't quite explain best look it up on YouTube). That's definitely not something I like or appreciate about this watch. Still, it is a fairly easy watch to read even in low light conditions so I can see past that. Certainly not regretting adding it to my collection of watches.

Excellente montre. A eu des soucis au début de fiabilité (susceptible à courant statique) corrigé depuis. Par rapport a une vector on gagne les heures de lever et coucher de soleil, et un affichage de l'historique du baromètre sous forme de graphique. En montagne, on récupère une alarme de tempête (perte de plus de 4 Hp sur 1 ou 2 heures). Comme on peut en altitude passer de ciel dégagé à couvert et pluie forte ou de grêle en moins d'une heure, c'est utile pour se protéger à temps. Disposer de l'heure de coucher permet de faire son campement pendant qu'il fait jour, et de ne pas s'amuser a monter une tente ou un hamac dans le noir. Attention au changement de la pile : si on veut pouvoir continuer à plonger avec la montre (qui contient un profondimètre fonctionnant jusqu'à -10 M) il faut acheter le kit Suunto comprenant une pile et un joint neuf. Si vous ne plongez pas avec, pas besoin de changer le joint (disons pas à chaque changement de pile, mais après quelques changements de pile). Si vous ne changez pas le joint, il faut acheter du lubrifiant à base de silicone, en mettre sur le bout de son doigt, et l'étaler sur le joint sous la forme d'une très fine pellicule avant de replacer le joint dans la montre (regardez le canal Youtube de la marque Suunto, ils ont une vidéo qui montre comment on change une pile sur ce modèle). Il ne faut jamais toucher la pile de remplacement avec les mains, car elles sont conductrices, et feront perdre plusieurs mois de charge à la pile. Il faut donc manipuler la pile avec un gant en latex ou un bout de sopalin pour l'installer dans la montre. Quand on retire l'ancienne, on utilise un objet non metallique comme un cure dent en bois, et surtout rien qui ne soit en métal (court-circuits garantis dans la montre autrement, qui sera abîmée). Très belle, excellente évolution par rapport au module Vector. Le module Vector peut subir bien plus de dégâts et continuer à fonctionner, donc si vous prévoyez de l'escalade ou des chocs, une Vector sera plus solide. Pour de l'alpinisme au-delà de 2000 m, je prendrais la Core plutôt que la Vector. Une pile de rechange glissée dans un coin au cas où. Elle est belle, surtout en affichage noir. Je n'ai jamais eu de souci de lecture de l'affichage, et on peut régler le contraste sur ce modèle (on ne peut pas le faire sur une Vector). Sur Internet on trouve la doc pour entrer dans le menu de maintenance, qui permet de modifier le contraste au-dela des valeurs prévues par la doc au besoin. Si vous ne manipulez pas la pile de rechange avec un contact direct de la peau des doigts, et utilisez un petit cure-dent pour extraire l'ancienne, pas de souci. Il est recommandé de changer la pile pour une neuve avant de partir en expédition plutôt que d'avoir à jouer des doigts engourdis en altitude si la pile vient à faiblir. Une très bonne évolution par rapport à la Vector, mais un peu plus fragile vis à vis des chocs. L'écran d'une Vector est en plastique rayable, il encaisse plus, par contre une Vector aura après 5 ou 10 ans l'écran bien rayé bien que fonctionnelle. La Core dispose d'un écran minéral qui ne se raye pas facilement : même des chocs directs dessus ne laissent aucune rayure. Mais d'expérience, je ne lui ferais pas subir les mauvais traitements que j'ai pu faire subir à mes Vector (me jetter au sol, la montre percutant le sol avec moi ou bien escalader à main nues arbres et parfois, la montre frottant un peu partout rayant plastique et écran de la Vector). Bracelet confortable, qui a été amélioré il y a peu de temps au niveau de la petite pièce qui tient la languette : elle était trop dure à retirer ou déplacer, et ils ont corrigé en rabotant de moitié le renfoncement qui frotte sur la languette du strap. On trouve sur Amazon ou Ebay très facilement des écrans de protection qui se collent sur l'écran si vous craignez pour ce dernier des rayures. Mais vous n'aurez ce souci qu'avec la Vector. Pour ma part, je pense qu'il faut posséder une Vector et Core. La Vector en version HR (Heart Rate) pour surveiller son niveau cardiaque et le travailler entre 70 et 90 % de son niveau maxi pour augmenter sa capacité cardiaque, et une Core qu'on attache sur son sac en fonction altimètre, réglée depuis un point d'altitude connu, alarme de tempête activée et dont on utilise cette fonction, l'altimètre et les heures de lever/coucher en randonnée en montagne. La Core est particulièrement à l'aise en montagne.

Kesinlikle güzel bir saat tavsiye ederim kaba durur mu diye bir tereddütünüz varsa kaba da olmadığını belirtmek isterim. Ufak bir sıkıntı gümrük ile ilgili sıkıntılar yüzünden ürün daha geç ulaştı elime buna rağmen 5 yıldız veriyorum.
