From the author of the bestselling The Reason I Jump, an extraordinary self-portrait of a young adult with autism “Essential reading for parents and teachers of those with autism who remain nonverbal.”—Temple Grandin Naoki Higashida was only thirteen when he wrote The Reason I Jump, a revelatory account of autism from the inside by a nonverbal Japanese child, which became an international success. Now, in Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8, he shares his thoughts and experiences as a young man living each day with severe autism. In short, powerful chapters, Higashida explores school memories, family relationships, the exhilaration of travel, and the difficulties of speech. He also allows readers to experience profound moments we take for granted, like the thought-steps necessary for him to register that it’s raining outside. Acutely aware of how strange his behavior can appear to others, he aims throughout to foster a better understanding of autism and to encourage society to see people with disabilities as people, not as problems. With an introduction by the bestselling novelist David Mitchell, Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8 also includes a dreamlike short story Higashida wrote especially for the U.S. edition. Both moving and of practical use, this book opens a window into the mind of an inspiring young man who meets every challenge with tenacity and good humor. However often he falls down, he always gets back up. Praise for Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8 “[Naoki Higashida’s] success as a writer now transcends his diagnosis. . . . His relative isolation—with words as his primary connection to the outside world—has allowed him to fully develop the powers of observation that are necessary for good writing, and he has developed rich, deep perspectives on ideas that many take for granted. . . . The diversity of Higashida’s writing, in both subject and style, fits together like a jigsaw puzzle of life put in place with humor and thoughtfulness.” — The Japan Times “Profound insights about what the struggle of living with autism is really like . . . Once again, the invitation to step inside Higashida’s mind is irresistible.” — London Evening Standard “Naoki Higashida’s lyrical and heartfelt account of his condition is a gift to anyone involved with the same challenges. . . . Higashida shows a delicate regard for the difficulties his condition creates . . . and is adept at explaining his experiences in language that makes sense to neurotypicals.” — The Guardian Review: A Beautiful Insight into Autism - A Must-Read for Families - I bought this book with the hope of gaining a better understanding of my son, who has autism. As a parent, it can sometimes be difficult to truly comprehend what’s going on in his mind, even though he’s on the high-functioning side of the spectrum. I wanted something that could offer a perspective that my daughter—who is typically developing—could relate to as well. This book has easily become one of my personal favorites. The author eloquently captures the thoughts, emotions, and challenges of a young person living with autism in a way that is both deeply moving and incredibly insightful. I found myself reflecting on how I may have misunderstood my son in the past. The author shares intimate reflections on family dynamics, feelings of isolation, and the desire for connection, which resonated deeply with me. Some parts of the book brought tears to my eyes, as I realized how many moments I missed or misinterpreted. For anyone who wants to understand autism on a more personal and intimate level, this book is a must-read. It provided the clarity I was searching for and opened my eyes to my son’s inner world in ways I had often wondered about. I highly recommend this to parents, siblings, and anyone looking to foster a deeper empathy and understanding of autism. Review: Great book - This book change my view on Autism and how we interact with people. It changed how my son and I communicate. I couldn’t tell you how much this book helps.

A story of resilence from a young man with autism
The young man who wrote this and another book has lived with autism for about two decades. He is very articulate and describes his inner life in a way that is engaging, sometimes funny, heartbreaking and heartwarming. If you have in your family or your classroom someone who lives with these challenges it may give you a whole new perspective on life -- your own and your family-member's or your student's.

Enjoyable and helpful
Naoki encourages you to keep trying both as caregiver and autistic individual. He talks about being patient with slow progress and not limiting yourself or not limiting your charge. There is much more to this book but it is a message of encouragement and answers and stories that are wonderful to read.

Great book! Very educational.
Everyone should read this book. It is very well written and explains so much about autism so people can have a better understanding of the strength and obstacles autistic people have to endure.

NEW book - Damage to cover & sleeve
Have not read -Review ONLY about physical properties. Bought new but arrived with damage to the cover (front& back) and sleeve (inside folds-front & back), and has some sort of sticker on the inside for some reason. Pages have a tiny bit of dirt on the edges (only visible when book is closed and looking along edges) but otherwise appear to be in "new" condition. For paying for new, there should not be any damage to the cover or sleeve. I know it's not a terribly expensive book but it's also not super cheap. So for the price, I expect better.

Interesting book
This is well written, and explains very well how it feels to be an autistic child. This is an excellent book for parents of autistic children.

Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight

Second Great Book by Naoki Higashida
This is a great book like the first one that gives a good insight into the world of autism. I would read the first book first. 'The reason I Jump' Written by an autistic boy. I have an autistic child myself and it's made me realise and understand the way autistic people process info and why they behave the way they do. I think all school teachers should be made to read this book. It will change their approach and attitude towards special needs children. In some mainstream schools, some teachers are out of touch with how to deal with autistic/sensory children just complaining that these children are naughty. This book will open their eyes, mind and thinking. Recommended for Teachers, parents and anyone interested in the world of autism. I would also recommend 'the reason I jump' same author
