Valuable tool & Best pipe lighter.
Just take a second and enjoy reading those well written directions first. Good well written directions are sadly not as common these days. You might need a magnifying glass the print is small. Thankfully Zippo's high quality USA made lighters are built to last a lifetime and work as they should from day one. I really like the feel of that black coating because it has just enough tooth kinda like a chalkboard so it's not slippery in my hands. It wipes off nice if you get any grease or dirt in it. A lighter for everyone to use this is a wonderful tool for you that will make you feel proud possibly nostalgic too. When you use this lighter you are not contributing to planned obsolescence or toxic garbage causing pollution. You can replace a wick, re pack, replace flint, and re fill with ease. These are safer to carry and will treat you right. Yes you can recycle your empty Zippo fluid can. I prefer the pipe insert because it adds versatility to this lighter. Just as wind resistant as the others, and when you light your pipe no nasty butane or petroleum taste because these burn clean. Regular tobacco pipes to your posh Turkish water pipe this is the lighter you want. If you have one burning dirty or producing excess soot just adjust your wick a little or trim your wick carefully. Dont over fill your lighter. Use only fluid and flints specified by Zippo it will last longer. Works great for burning your nylon or polyester threads if you sew at home or in an industrial sewing setting like a upholstery shop. Love the pipe insert for lighting incense, lightng candles, lighting classic liquid fuel camp stoves, wick type kerosene lamps, camp fires, BBQ, lighting acetylene torches, propane torches, white gas blowtorch, lighting a coal forge, and even the kitchen range when that ignitor stops working. A few tips to improve your fuel efficiency. To stop any leakage and just wipe a little petroleum jelly or chapstick on the sides of the insert after filling your lighter. When you slide the insert back in just wipe away any excess and this seals them up. This helps keep dust or moisture out of your lighter. Importantly use safety, common sense, and teach others.

Possibly the last lighter you will ever buy
Zippo lighters are the best out there, period. I have been smoking a pipe for a long time, and my trusty zippo pipe lighter has always (and continues to) work reliably. I have had a chrome Zippo pipe lighter for over 8 years (matches before that) and it still, to this day, works like the day I got it. The ony reason I got this particular one (same one, different color) is that I wanted to treat myself to a different color. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING has ever gone wrong with my Zippo, and the only things nI have ever had to do to it have been: refuel, change flint, change wick. I have dropped it, sat on it, and it still works. There are a lot of pipe lighters out there, many will cost you several times more than this and will not last you. Go ahead and research the fancier pipe lighters out there, you will find that something always goes wrong with them. Zippo has, for generations, made a quality product at a low price, and it continues to do so. They stand behind their product 100% and, in the unlikely event that something does break they will send you a replacement part FREE. Butane lighters are cool looking, but do not last without costly repairs. If you want consistent performance, year after year, either get matches or a Zippo, a fancy and expensive lighter with electric ignition will not last you. Go ahead, search the "main players" out there and see waht people are saying. A few things to keep in mind: - People complain that the lighter spills fluid, but this only happens if you over fill it. Add fluid until you see the wick gets moist (without dripping) and you will be fine. - People out there complain that they can taste the lighter fluid. Well, I never had this issue. - People complain they have to re-fill the lighter (DUH! it's a re-fillable lighter). A fill will last you about a week, I'd say that's reasonable. - One thin I heard that it is absolutely and utterly ridiculuous is that you have to such the flame down too hard to get it to the tobacco. If you have to suck like a vacuum cleaner to light your tobacco, you simply do not know how to pack your pipe, period. I will not spend 10 times as much for Chinese made garbage when I can get a good, quality product, at a fraction of the price, made in the U.S. and guaranteed for life. Trust me, you are unlikely to ever have to use the warranty. Matches are great for lighting a pipe, but not as convenient. Bic lighters are good to have stuck in a drawer if you run out of fluid or matches. If you want a proper pipe lighter that will last you your entire life time and will be easy on the wallet, get a Zippo.

Works great for me
This is a nice little thing to have if you aren't good at using matches to light your pipe, or if you are paranoid about damaging a briar pipe. The way it works is simple. Light like a normal zippo, then turn on it's side. Behold the Flame of Olympus (seriously, the flame can get HIGH), then drag lightly in your pipe. The flame will be directed safely away from the sides of the pipe, and will light your tobacco evenly. Make sure to have the lighter lit for a few seconds before using to light the pipe tobacco. If you don't, you will get some delicious zippo flavored tobacco. Make sure you turn the zippo sideways QUICKLY! if you don't, the metal cage will get insanely hot. The upside: Makes lighting your pipe really easy. If you are using good lighter fluid, you won't have to deal with adding Zippo flavor to the tobacco (most standard zippo fluid, in the black can, works really well). Like any zippo, it's easy to transport, though it gets warm/hot really fast. Downside: -The cage can get exceedingly hot in a few seconds. Turn the lighter on it's side immediately after lighting. If you don't, than even after closing the sleeves lid, you can still hurt yourself with just how hot the top gets. -If you have never used a zippo lighter before, enjoy the first time you fill it and light it. Make sure you aren't somewhere...flammable. The flame on this thing can get NASTY. Since it's not confined to a windproof cage, and since lighter fluid likes to spread all over the zippo's sleeve and body without your knowledge, the flame on this can startle you if you aren't ready for it, especially when the flame shoots inside of your sleeves open lid (although that does look pretty friggen cool). -The cage thingy where the wick sits starts off a little loose. Since the zippo body fits so tightly inside the sleeve, it may be a bit nerve wracking the first two or so times you take the body out of the sleeve to fill it. Overall, this is a fantastic lighter. I highly recommend it to any pipe smoker, especially if you are worried about damaging the briar on most pipes.

Product deserves 5, poor shipping bumps it down to 4... and that's being generous.
This Zippo lighter is highly functional and gorgeous! The matte finish is really nice, and I really enjoy lighting my pipe with it. It's as wonderful as any other Zippo lighter, just as you'd expect except even better for pipe use. This Zippo, like all others, makes the iconic "click" sound when you go to light up. Some people complained abut the bit on top of the chimney being to loose. I was lucky, I guesse, because mine didn't jiggle, and when I take it off and put it back on it snaps right into place. The cartridge is not too loose and not to tight. Perfectly snug, but loose enough that it can be pulled out for maintenance. Deserves a 5. Reason only 4 stars: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WARNING TO PRIME MEMBERS, about shipping: I made my order on a Friday, with 2-day Prime Shipping, and ended up receiving my package on Thursday of next week. It should have been delivered by Tuesday, worst case on Wednesday. I was not informed ahead of time that I would need to sign for a package (some people actually have to, y'know, work...), and UPS refused to come up my driveway to deliver to my house. (I live in a rural-ish area in NY, and my driveway is 0.25 miles long, so you wouldn't want to walk up to my house from the street). They also did not leave a note on Wednesday, the day tracking claimed that UPS "attempted delivery", which I think is impossible if you won't even come up to the house! ***** On top of all this, my lighter was carelessly packed in the same box as two other products I bought (one of them very fragile). Luckily the gift box the lighter is in kept it from being banged around too harshly, which made sure it wasn't exposed to too much friction on the flint and catching fire. HOWEVER, my bottle of glass cleaner came with a HUGE dent in it, and the cap was all scuffed up with really deep nicks. Luckily my antique wasn't crushed and broken! I'm not sure how I managed to be lucky with that, considering that the packing on the inside was very mediocre. If you are planning on purchasing with Prime Membership, please do yourself a favor and contact both the seller and Amazon, and beg them to be careful about packing and to NOT use UPS. USPS is way better service, much better care with the items, is fairly cheap, and delivers pretty quickly. Plus, USPS is legally constrained from searching your packages without a warrant. Private shipping and mailing companies are not required to have a warrant to search your items, and they do not have to inform you when they are going to conduct a search. In fact, UPS will commonly pick out packages at random to search through for contraband or paraphernalia (in states that do not legally constrict this practice... check where your items are coming from and what route they will be traveling, if you can, and do an internet search for your local laws). UPS has also been known to have employees carelessly toss packages onto people's porches, breaking items or leaving them to be possibly stolen. One other thing: I have had Prime deliveries from FedEx and USPS before, so I know it is possible. Amazon or the seller should take it upon themselves to improve their service by informing customers ahead of time about which carrier they are going to use for the shipment BEFORE the purchase is finalized. I really wanted these items, so I didn't cancel the order (plus, cancelling orders is a whole nother hassle), but I just knew that UPS would mess this up somehow. I'm glad I lucked out and that it wasn't as bad as it could have been. In the future, I will contact the seller and Amazon ahead of time, and I will not make any orders that will be shipped by UPS.

The BEST Option on the Market
I have multiple pipe lighters, all of them have, at some point, failed...except...the Zippo. This lighter is easy to use and reliable. It is in the classic zippo shape and size. IT WORKS...no fuss, no 50-click butane's, or using failed lighters as projectiles out of frustration...simple, quality, and peace-of-mind is what you get with the Zippo Pipe Lighter it just works every time, no question. They come in a variety of color options (case options). Of course, as with all Zippo's, the guts can fit any standard Zippo case. Zippo's are windproof (that's a HUGE BENEFIT). Zippo has a lifetime warranty, their trademark is, "It works or we fix it free." They have GREAT customer service. With a Zippo you get the COOL factor. Some have complained about the fuel taste...I found that not to be an issue. I "smell" the fuel, I don't taste it. When you light your pipe the Zippo is close to the nose area so you will smell the Zippo fuel, but it's not overwhelming or terrible. It is a very mild issue, it certainly should not prevent the purchase of this lighter. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Zippo Pipe Lighter for the Briar and YTPC community, you won't be disappointed.

Great lighter for a pipe smoker
I had a pretty cheap torch lighter prior to this one. I soon grew frustrated that it took 20 strikes to light if there was any air movement at all. I courted the idea of buying a flint-strike Corona, but the price was just too much. Finally I decided to try the Zippo pipe lighter. Mainly because Zippos have a good reputation and it was cheap (~$17). I purchased this lighter and it is great. It works exactly as hoped. The unique insert allows for perfect delivery of the flame. My fears of getting a mouth full of volatile Zippo fuel were quickly dispelled. I do use, Zippo fuel, not a cheaper variety, so I can't say how those fare. I never taste the fuel (but I'm sure some pipe aficionados will say they can). The lighter also seems to lose fuel to evaporation slower than the Zippos I played with as a kid. I only smoke occasionally and after fueling the Zippo and smoking one night, the lighter can stay closed in my drawer and will light almost two weeks later! I highly recommend this to anyone looking of an awesome pipe lighter. The awesome price tag makes it all the more appealing.

A Fine Lighter
This is my first Zippo so they are kind of new to me to use. I have had this a few weeks now and so far I am very happy with it. It isn't an overwhelming flame and actually pretty soft looking and lights my pipe perfect. It actually does good under windy conditions though not perfect but it works. The look of the lighter is very clean and smooth with the Zippo click of course upon opening it. Only issue I have is how quickly it goes through fluid. I don't really smoke much but find it must evaporate or something inside the lighter. You can buy a good size container of fluid relatively cheap from here on Amazon so its not that big of a deal. Just don't get stuck with no fluid in the lighter and you'll be happy. The lighter does get extremely hot on the metal parts near the flame when used or even when not used much but common sense works perfect here.
