History of the Moscow Mule: Pre-dating the martini, the Moscow Mule was the first vodka drink to sweep the nation. The legend began in 1941 Los Angeles. John Martin had recently purchased a small vodka distillery for $14,000. This was a gamble because in the 40's most people had never heard of vodka, gin was the white spirit of choice. His friend, Jack Morgan was a distributer of ginger beer and also the owner of the famed Hollywood restaurant, the Cock 'n Bull, a British pub on the Sunset Strip. The two friends sat at the bar lamenting their business woes. John was having problems selling his vodka and Jack had a surplus of ginger beer. A bit of brainstorming led to their new hit cocktail! The name Moscow Mule was chosen as a tribute to the spirit's homeland. Being on the Sunset Strip, many celebrities would frequent the establishment and they enlisted a friend with a copper factory to engrave personalized copper mugs with the names of the celebrity clientele. The drink was a hit across the US and a large part of vodka sales going from 40,000 cases in 1950 to 4,000,000 cases by 1955. Today vodka is the most popular spirit in the United States.
