Replaced my Gamepad in a Heartbeat
The build quality of this remote is excellent. There's a little give to the buttons, but everything feels spectacular and solid in the hand. It works as expected, and I've been using this as my main remote on my Nvidia Shield TV even though I'm a gamer - it's so convenient, it replaced the gamepad in a heartbeat. The coolest bit? Sue me, but it's the glowing microphone button. It just looks so damn cool. Being able to plug your headphones into the bottom is a close second. I do have a few minor gripes with the controller. None of them bother me too much, but your mileage may vary. 1. Plastic parts get micro scratches easily, as does all plastic 2. I can't confidently grip this remote as I'm watching stuff on my TV, since the volume control is touch sensitive. Grip it too hard and your volume will start changing. 3. When I plug in my headphones to the port, it comes out relatively easily. There's no "click" or light lock to keep it in there. 4. No dedicated media control buttons. The layout is nice and as an artist who can appreciate simplicity and design, I get why they omitted it. But still, having forward/backward/play buttons would be much more convenient. Fast-forward and rewind is easily one of the biggest inconveniences on Android TV. The difference between using a touch screen to drag a slider vs holding a button to FF (or worse, select 4x speed like on DVD)players) is night and day. Overall it's a solid remote. The complains I have are mostly informative, so you know exactly what you're getting into. My experience with it has been great, and with the $25 promotion I would say it's a necessity to complement your Shield TV.

Like the Apple and Fire remotes had a beautiful baby----with "ugly" parents.
I'm a heavy Plex user, and this remote is absolutely required for using with Shield TV. Since it's bluetooth, it doesn't require a line of sight and works with any Android device (eg, phone and tablet). I've owned the Mac Mini with apple's remote and the Amazon Fire TV. The quality of the nvidia remote exceeds these other remotes due to use of material (aluminium) and functionality. The Apple remote is too minimalist, tiny/thin, and hard to distinguish buttons. The Fire remote feels cheaply mass produced. The shield remote is rechargeable via usb. Has a capacitive touch volume control (the plastic strip in the middle half of the remote---below the microphone icon). Built in microphone for voice control on the shield (like the Fire). Very responsive on screen control. Finally, if you can plug in headphones (to the remote!) to hear the Shield's sound instead of playing thru TV. I can imagine families finding this a huge plus....or watching TV in bed late at night. Unlike Apple's high price for minimal features, the high price on the shield remote seems very justified to me. Many more features with very high quality. Recommend this to anyone considering. (I purchased 2 of these and 2 shield TVs for using Plex at home).

A pricey but convenient remote
The Nvidia Shield Remote is not necessarily easier to use than the controller, it's just more comfortable. It's lighter and functional. The rechargeable battery will last you 2-4 weeks or more depending on how often you use. The quality is respectable, not amazing but rather good. There is a slight bump where the different materials meet on one side and it's not there on the other. Not bad or very noticeable. Is it worth 50 dollars? Honestly not unless you would find it too irritating to use the controller. Overall, my cons really only take one star off, I do like it but I also received it in their bundle so the remote only cost me 25 dollars. If you don't mind shelling out 50 dollars than I would say go for it! Pros - Easier to handle and lighter than shield controller - Battery last quite a while - Voice search worked great - Great Quality (not amazing but nicer than most remotes) - Connects via Bluetooth so you can use it most places in the apartment - Has headphone 3.5mm jack so you can plug your headphones or earbuds and listen privately to your videos or games Cons - Price - Volume control is wonky (had to do subtle changes with the touch sensitive slider) - Buttons don't feel cheap but also don't feel like they wouldn't break after a ton of heavy use (at least in the 4 way directional wheel button)

A premium, but very limited and expensive, acessory for the NVIDIA Shield Android TV.
I got the NVIDIA Shield remote along with the Shield Android TV when they were bundled together and this was offered as a freebie. I'm looking at this review from the persepctive of someone who would have to buy the thing by itself for about $50 and cover the full experience. First the good. This remove is all metal, it has a super solid build quality and feels like a piece of premium AV equipment. It's ultra thin and looks really cool. It only has a few controls on it, as you can see - a directional 'ring', an OK button, back, home and a mic button. The thin area below the mic is a touch sensitive volume control pad. On the top of the unit you'll find a charging port and headphone jack. The remote is very easy to set up and use on the Shield TV and is free of input lag thanks to its propriety WiFi connection. So, why doesn't it get five stars then? Simple. This, to me, is not even close to being worth $50. You could but any number of third party remotes or keypads that will give you more functionality than the Shield remote at a fraction of the cost. I used mine a bit for the first few days I had my Shield, but now almost never use it since it lacks a lot functionality that I need (trackpad, keyboard, etc.). The handheld keyboard and mouse combo device I primarily use when not playing games can be purchase for about $15-$18 and does so much more, but admittedly lacks a headphone jack. Is the Shield remote right for you? It depends on how you use your Shield TV, when you get down to it. If you want a simple remote for simple apps like Netflix, HBO Go and the like and don't need any extra functionality beyond the basic controls it offers, then you won't be dissapointed. If you only plan to use the remote occasionally but want something with a real premium look and feel, you will also be suitably pleased. But if the type and variety of ways is more important that the style of the remote and you plan to use apps like a web browser or media players like Kodi, then you'll probably want something that offers significantly more control. The Shield Remote is kind of a niche product. If it hadn't been included with my Shield TV, I would have never purchased it for $50. Frankly, I don't see how the price can be justified, it should cost closer to a third of that considering the very basic functionality it offers. It works, it just doesn't do a whole lot.

Great great remote but terrible service!
First off I would like to say this a remote is great. The voice search in YouTube is fantastic and is 99% spot on. This is actually one of the first voice controlled devices that I've seen work properly. The text to speech is spot on. The first remote I received paired up properly but then kept loosing the connection even though the battery was full. I called Nvidia and 3 phone calls later the remote would no longer pair up at all. I placed a call to Nvidia and the rep told me he would "have to search to find out if there was anything else to try and call me back within 24 hours." Shouldn't their technical service reps already know the procedures to try and if the remote is bad or not? After never receiving a call back from Nvidia I placed several more calls and every time I was assured within 45 minutes I would receive a RMA number in an email. I just gave up but 2 weeks later, yes 2 weeks later, I received an email from someone at Nvidia asking if I still needed an RMA number... Are you kidding me? I told them forget it, I returned the remote to Amazon for a replacement. I would like to give this remote 5 stars but I can not due to the terrible service Nvidia provided. If in the future our remotes have issues will be stuck with no support. So I have no choice but to knock off 2 stars. I was absolutely blasted, as this was some of the worst customer service I've ever seen from a company. I thought Nvidia was a good company until this experience, now I'm very weary of them.

Great remote, you will likely lose it in the couch,
*** Updated, months ago after an update voice search stopped working. There are dozens of threads on Nvidia forum and elsewhere. If I plug a head phone with a mic in voice search works fine. I spent a dozen hours trying to solve this riddle. I spent 2 hours talking to Nvidia Tech support. I find it hard to believe that everyone's mic failed on their remote all at once. I think its a software issue that could be resolved if Nvidia cared. They offered me a RMA but I had to send a picture of my box with the serial number. Why would I have the box 6 months later? They have a bunch of other silly requirements. Originally I gave it 4 stars and took away 3 simply because Nvidia doesn't care to fix this issue. I still use the remote for now, I will continue to figure out what is wrong, and may RMA it eventually. Since people online say the RMA version works correctly out of the box, its safe to think that new ones should work, for now, until it doesn't. Great remote, good size holds a long charge and easy to charge. the buttons are very responsive.. The coolest thing is the center is a volume control.. The worst part is the volume control is so inconsistant. The volume is a neat idea that just doesn't work well. I have horrible luck so maybe mine is defective. If the volume worked correcty this would be a 6 star device (5stars because its perfect and 1 start just to annoy obsessive people)

Great addition to the Nvidia Shield and makes it a user friendly experience overall.
The remote works great with the Nvidia shield we purchased. A great and more useful way to control and select items then the game style controller. The remote is small and sleek in its design. Just a basic button and outer ring that navigates and controls and selects everything you need to within the shield console. I also like the volume control style option of just sliding my finger in either a up or down motion to control the volume. The voice option is great as it allows you to easy search for items without having to navigate and select letter by letter what you would like to look for or do. This remote really makes the Nvidia Shield feel like a complete home media center that everyone in the family can control via the remote.

I've used this remote daily for over 2 years of being a cord-cutter and it has worked flawlessly. Bluetooth funtionality is great, never need to point the remote at the shield device. Also, the connectivity always you to be notified when the remote is low on charge. Response time is near-instantaneous. Capacitive volume slider is an awesome feature and i like the hard buttons for arrow key, center button, home, back and mic. Speaking about the mic, it is also a great function to have on a remote. Love the headphone jack option. I live in an apartment, so this allows me not to disturb my neighbors at late hours. In summart, this is a compact, lightweight remote with great functionality. 5 of 5 stars!
