Q: Where is this microscope made?

EMARTH not worth the money, poor magnification. Go for SWIFT COMPOUND MICROSCOPE SW200DL or something better. This one is made in China but is a reputed GERMAN design.

Q: Is this too fiddly for a 5 year old to enjoy?

I think a careful 5 year old would be fine when supervised by an adult. Perhaps without supervision after some practice

Q: is this suitable for a teen? say 13 yrs old or so?

I would say so, I bought it for my 6 year old grandson but when he first opened it I was using it more that him, I thought it was excellent. When we magnified the head of a small wasp it made him cry. I have to say it did look like something out of a science fiction movie.
