Harmony 700 Rechargeable Remote with Color Screen

In a nutshell, this device has brought together my Direct TV HD-DVR, Sony 3D Blu-ray player, Sony 820 3D 7.1 receiver and my LG 55LW5600 3D TV with great ease! I had 5 remotes confusing the heck out of me.... and I am a technical guy... this one device has given me the freedom to ENJOY my new 3D setup!!! I always knew about this but did not want to spend the money on it. So do not be a cheapo, do not think it is too complicated... if you have 4-5 remotes confusing you stop thinking about buying this and just buy it now! Just like your cell phone.... you will wonder how you managed without this device a week after setting it up! So is this the best choice of the Logitech bunch? I read pros and cons of each one... the price point was my main concern... and making sure I got a remote to do the task that I needed was too. In this case I have 4 devices (TV, Blu-ray, DVR, and 7.1 surround receiver)... and maybe I'll add a gaming device later. So this remote had me covered for the amount of devices I have. For another $65 bucks or so you can get the nicer Harmony One but in retrospect it would have been total overkill for my setup (considering my budget too). Easy to set up: So I had the remote sent to my work. I attached it to my work PC, downloaded the software and started the setup process. Less than 10 minutes later the remote was configured. When I got home everything worked flawlessly! I stuck all those factory remotes in my couch's hidden remote pocket and left the one Harmony 700 at arms reach! (Note: the software was a breeze... just have all your gears model numbers at hand and know how your inputs are wired up... if you have that a 10 minute load time is realistic.) On a note: Some people are electronically challenged. Some are computer challenged. If you are this is a great device for you none the less.... BUT have someone who is not challenged help you get set up. If you know your way around a computer, know your model numbers and how your components are wired then this will be super easy for you. I HATE reviewers who give this device a low rating because they have no clue how to use a PC or how to read a model number off their TV. So if you read ANY review that claims this was hard then do not listen to those reviewers. This was easy... for a 40 year old that knows basic electronics. Another concern that people talk about is the batteries. The Harmony One has a Lithium Ion battery and this one has rechargeable AA batteries. No biggie... all you need to do is charge this once a month and you are done. It comes with the charger and data cable so who cares if the Harmony One has a better battery and a charging base. It is really a non issue in my honest opinion. BTW, it does not feel cheap. It feels rock solid in your hands, especially compared to the cheap remotes that came with the Sony Blu-ray and receiver. One last thing... once you get going and start to understand your new remote you will see that it is very intuitive and expandable. There are options to set your favorite TV channels, flip from one remote device to another and so forth. So after your set up play with the remote for a few weeks... and then once you get the feel of the things you will really love the Harmony 700 even more! Good luck everyone! UPDATE: 3/8/2012 The remote is still doing everything that we need! Battery life is great, reliability is solid, no complaints.... and all smiles! One remote that does the job of 5... we are very happy with this purchase!

Ok, so it's a remote but $100!?! Are you kidding me!?! Totally worth it. I have a Samsung Led TV, Apple TV, Onkyo Receiver, PS3 (need adapter), and a DVR controlled by this bad boy, and it all just works fantastically. Setup was a breeze. You simply connect the remote to your computer via the usb cable provide and follow the onscreen instructions; it really couldn't be much easier. Since everything is controlled through a program on your computer and then synced to your remote, you don't have to play the game where you're waiting for lights to flash to know if everything synced correctly. You can add favorite channels with labels and all sorts of goodies via the logitech software. It simply works very well. I suppose you could spend more money and get added features with the Harmony One but the 700 suited my needs nicely, you miles will obviously vary depending on your needs. I can't comment on the battery life at the moment but it seems to be holding up well. I've charged it once since I got it. This is another issue I dislike: there is no battery display to tell you how much juice you have left on the batteries. You'll just get a warning when they're nearly dead to plug it in. Charging takes a few hours. I think more expensive models might have this option but it's not a deal breaker for me because the functionality is essentially the same. One quirk: sometimes when I push the watch tv button (which powers on all components necessary to do this function), some components will be out of sync. For instance, if I push the button perhaps my TV and receiver will turn on and not the DVR. It's sort of an annoyance you likely have to live with but doesn't really happen often. If it does simply push the help button on the remote and it'll take care of everything with a few buttons and on screen instructions, 5 secs. tops. Not too complicated but it would be nice if everything worked perfectly every time. :) So, yea, do you really need to spend $100 on a remote? Probably not. Will it make you look cool in front of the ladies? Not likely. Does it do the dishes? No. Will it make it so you don't have to work with ten million remotes simply to watch a football game? Most definitely. And, I would add, that if you have a technology-challenged partner who never knows how to turn things on because of all the remotes that only you know how to use, purchase this for them as it will make your life much easier.

I held off for years in buying one of these all-in-one remotes because they didn't control my Playstation 3. I felt if I'm going to buy an all-in-one remote, it should do it all. I recently found out about the Logitech Harmony remotes and the PS3 Adapter! Now truly it could control all my devices! I opted for the 700 because I only have 5 components in my system right now (TV, A/V receiver, PS3, DVD, and satellite DVR), but the Harmony 700 allows for 6, so I'm prepared for the future if I add a new component! And I will always be prepared for the future, because even if I replace a piece of equipment, Logitech is always updating their database with the newest A/V equipment! Makes spending $100 on a remote a lot easier knowing it is future-proof. I ran into 1 difficulty with my satellite receiver, but the online instructions on how to reset the remote channel number were very good and worked right away. I'll be honest and say that you can't describe setting up the remote as "simple." It requires a software download, knowing the exact model numbers of all your equipment, and at least a basic knowledge of the inputs on all of your components (for instance, which inputs your DVD player runs into on your A/V receiver, and what input your A/V receiver runs into your TV). If you find technical things difficult, you may need to call the support line for help (thankfully, a few months of free support are included) or get a tech savvy friend to help you. If you would describe yourself as "tech savvy," you shouldn't have too much trouble setting this remote up. The software is pretty well designed and pretty easy to figure out. Once the remote was set up, I absolutely LOVE it! It does exactly what it says it does, controls all your devices simultaneously. You can push one button, "Watch TV," and it will turn on your TV to the right input, your AV receiver, and your satellite/cable DVR device. Watch a DVD? It will turn off your DVR and turn the DVD player on. And very important: It controls the PS3 beautifully! Every PS3 command is available to you! (NOTE: You do need the Harmony PS3 adapter, which is sold separately). It actually does even more than I expected, allowing you to customize every single button to do what you want it to do! The 4 colored PS3 buttons? I set them up to control my DVR when watching TV. I love the flexibility it has. I found using the controls after a while came second nature, as the remote is set up very intuitively. No review on battery life yet, as I have yet to need to recharge, but the rechargeable batteries are included and you can just plug it in when you aren't using it. So the bottom line? It does exactly what it says it does, controls 6 devices, and will turn on (or off) every device you need to do what you want. It's just that easy. The actual setup of the remote can be challenging, but very worth it. If you're looking to control 6 or less devices, this is absolutely the right remote. If you want touchscreen capability, or the ability to control more than 6, I'd definitely recommend looking at the Harmony One.

We have been living with an A/V setup in my family room with mostly new equipment--large LED TV, Samsung Blu-ray DVD with built-in Netflix streaming, Apple TV, and an A/V receiver to power all the sound. This remote has made everything easier to live with. Not only has it eliminated our remote clutter, it has actually solved quite a few niggling problems for us. It is also simple to use and even the kids and my husband are comfortable with it. I don't have a cable set-top box or Tivo. I DO get a ton of digital stations on sub-channels via basic cable with the tuner on the TV. Due to the foibles of digital tv, every tv tuner tunes a bit differently, so my two digital tv's have different channels for the same stations. I was tired of remembering them all. Plus, it takes a bit longer to tune a channel with digital. If you make a mistake or need to hunt for a channel, it takes much longer than in the "old days" of analog. I went ahead a set up favorite channels to program in almost all the channels we watch regularly. I downloaded logos from a 3rd party site to use on the remote. Now we have cute logos on a screen to select from and they can be reordered and changed easily any time. No sub-channels to remember any more. My blu-ray device works fine. Even Netflix streaming works. The buttons were not set up completely by default. I think I was missing the "red" button that would bring me to Netflix in one click. I bought this remote partially because it has the red, blue, yellow, green buttons that were familiar to us and we really need that red one for our Samsung. I called customer support to get walked through adding in that functionality. The agent surprised me with wonderful service. She started by asking what my user name in their system is. Then she asked me what I needed. Then she told me, "Okay--update your remote." I did and it worked! We get this service for 90 days with this product. I have no doubt that I could have called before I set anything up and had them do it for me, but I like to learn things and be somewhat self-reliant, so I did most of it by myself. The Apple TV works better with this product. I did have to follow a faq that they link to in the setup program to "unpair" the device to make it be able to control the Apple TV. After I did this, the Harmony works BETTER than the remote that comes with the Apple TV. In our family room, our seating is fairly far from the Apple TV and the little remote that came with the Apple TV sometimes only worked if we moved closer. What a pain. The Harmony works very well. I really like this product. The setup takes a bit longer than I expected so it lost a star for that. Also, the mac program doesn't look and work "mac-ish" and sometimes had glitches (I just quit and restart to make it work properly) so it lost a star for that. It is pretty easy to use the program after getting used to it, so I only took off the one star.

I agree with the review by Andrew Kerr, an electronics engineer, about programming problems with the Harmony 700. To begin, Logitech replaced my remote under warranty due to faulty hardware - that is finally after much back and forth, much time and trouble before they would admit the problem. As with Mr. Kerr, I've had some entertainment "device" changes, and most often the Logitech had problems even after getting everything to appear correctly on the software - it just did not transfer to remote operation and simply didn't do what the software said. I'm aware of the many positive reviews, and I can only guess that fewer and more broadly used electronic "devices" and connections may make the difference. For instance, I have an Outlaw Audio Receiver which the Logitech software indicated did not have a USB input - of course it does and I've been using it for years. I figured out a work-around by programming FM Music to play on USB. I contacted Logitech support to tell them that their software was wrong, and the rep kept insisting there was no problem because of the same obscure method I had already found. After much debate, I finally got the rep to admit that, if the Outlaw Receiver was programmed correctly by Logitech to start with, no special programming would be necessary. Really, how would anyone know to try FM Music for a USB computer connection? The rep finally admitted this was true, but what a hassle! On my Oppo Blu-ray, the original remote has a "Home" button which is key to selecting which operation to perform; i.e., Play Disc, USB Flash Drive, Streaming, etc. This control simply did not appear on the Logitech remote, and I had to call support. Because it was not in the programming correctly - that is not at all - the rep had to remap the button to "Guide". Who would know how to do that? This brings me to the latest problem. I've spent a long time reprogramming the Harmony 700 for a new Comcast DTV box. Again, everything shows up exactly right on the software and the remote, but it doesn't work - the TV source does not respond when switching from another "device". Since I have it set up exactly right, I believe this is Logitech's fault, but they have a new support policy: $29 after 90 days regardless of whether Logitech is causing the problem. Yes, that's a third of the cost of the remote, and considering that I've had to contact them several times in the past, I can't even tell what that would that add up to! Regarding the many complaints about servers not being available, Logitech has a great answer. You would expect more servers: No! Logitech has added a new, very short "Time Out" making you log back in a number of times while trying to figure out how to work with Logitech's often obscure and unexplained terminology and flow. In total I have spent many hours trying every way to program Logitech errors (I actually have two Logitech remotes for each of two setups), and now they want me to pay on top of that. This is just plain abusive.

I'll just go down various attributes of this remote...hope it helps. Price: This remote is half the price of the next step up, the Harmony One. I went back and forth a few days (okay, weeks) and looked at Amazon and another popular electronics website for their reviews before making my decision. My conclusion was, although the Harmony One had a couple of more features, it wasn't worth double the price. The Harmony 700 looks "bland" compared to the Harmony One--especially seeing reviews and seeing photos on Amazon, however look at reviews--including video reviews elsewhere and you will see this is a pretty sturdy remote for the price. Try and find a Gold Box discount to get ultimate savings. Bottom line, a price of about 10 dollars cheaper might make this remote a classic deal, but it's still a good price as is. Looks/Build: As I stated, the remote looks bland on the Amazon website compared to the Harmony One, however this is a slick remote. It has a smooth matte finish, so no fingerprint smudges! The buttons are rubbery, but does not attract lint like I assumed it would. It feels nice and solid. The shape of it may be ergonomically pleasing, but I'm not an expert. I'll just say this remote looks better in person that the photos. Set-Up: I had another Harmony remote, however it was broken during a move, so I do not remember the model...but the faces were interchangeable. My experience with the Harmony allowed me to easily transfer the same programs to the new remote using the software on my computer that I already had. A couple of tweaks to accommodate my new television and cable box and I was pretty much good to go. The software set-up changed from my previous remote four years ago to the new remote. I had a lot more set-up to do whereas this software just recognized what every component does and how the remote should handle basic commands. Channel changing, volume changing, menu access, and even second button features on my DVD player were already programmed into the remote which made things super easy. This works with my MacBook Pro no problem. Overall Performance: Okay, set-up aside, this remote pretty much works as advertised, however I marked the star down for "functionality". At least 2-3 times a week I have to "fix" the remote using the Help because it won't turn on the television or "forgets" and my power on powers the systems off. The fix takes about 15 seconds, but it's annoying I have to keep doing this. Battery life lasts pretty long...a few weeks of normal use before the battery sign pops up. I usually just plug it in before I go to bed or leave for work, and it's charged. I wish the included cord would allow charging via my computer and I'm not sure why it doesn't. It's not worth it to purchase another cord...I have plenty of outlets, but they are usually not where I'm sitting on my couch! :-) Again, overall the few negatives I've mentioned is nothing compared to the positives. This is a great remote, good looking, good feel, and simple to setup and use. Five stars!

I love me some simplification in my life. As a father of 2 in a smallish house and a demanding job, I look for help wherever I can find it! I never really cared about multiple remotes when I only used 2, but then I got game systems, a receiver, a blu-ray player and it all became rather chaotic. A couple years ago I started looking for a solution to the remote problem and came across the Harmony 550. That was a great little remote, but there were definitely some problems (like the buttons wearing away to the point where you had to memorize what different keys were for). I needed something with a different material quality and a better button layout: the Harmony 700 fits the bill nicely. I like the color screen, though I consider it completely unnecessary (the 550 had monochrome) but the real winning qualities are the quality of the remote and the layout of the buttons. The materials are solid with hard rubber buttons that done feel like they'll wear as easily as the 550. The layout of the buttons makes sense to me in a way that the 550 lacked so that FF and RW are easily distinguishable from PLAY, for example. I have a hard time paying $100+ for a convenience item, but the Harmony remotes have proven themselves to be worth it. Oh, did I mention the batteries are rechargeable (as long as you install rechargeable batteries). That's a nice touch. The primary drawbacks of the 700 are that you cannot move the activities around without reprogramming the activity. That is, once the activity is setup in the software it is in the order that you programmed it. Also, something that is negatively different from the 550 is that there are only 2 activities per screen on the LCD. That is a strange departure from the 550, given there are 4 buttons and enough real estate. The final item is something that is hard to get around but that the software takes SO LONG to update the remote. It's not a huge deal, but when I make a change to a device I don't want to have to wait around, see if it works, tweak what doesn't, then wait around again while I update the remote again, rinse and repeat. Pros: Consolidates remotes quickly and easily, button layout makes sense, rechargeable batteries (USB), quick-start buttons Cons: Menus are not configurable enough, only 2-activities per screen

First, let me explain my home theater system. I have a DirecTV satellite HD recorder (HR21-200), Onkyo 608 video/audio receiver, Samsung 1080P TV, Sony S570 Blu-ray player, Sony multi-disk CD player, and an old Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player. All are hooked up through the Onkyo receiver using HDMI but I also have the TV set up individually connected to the satellite box so we can watch TV using the TV's speakers rather than the surround system since the wall separates the family room from the master bedroom and the surround system makes more noise through the wall than either of us can handle trying to get to sleep. I did a reasonable amount of research on Harmony remotes before selecting the one I wanted to buy, including reading many of the reviews on this site. Given my experience setting up my Harmony 700 remote I do not agree with most of the negative comments found in the reviews where the product was given 1, 2 or 3 stars. This remote is not cheaply made, does not have "squishy" keys, is not difficult to set up, or have other difficulties some people have commented about. I am not a techie but I do have computer experience working with my PC. First, I charged the included rechargeable batteries which took a couple of hours. After that it took me all of about 30-45 minutes to consolidate the information required about my home theater system, go online to the Logitech setup site, create a user account, download and install the Harmony setup software to my PC, select the setup I wanted for each component in my home theater system using the provided online setup program, and transfer it to the remote by USB cable from my PC. The setup steps that you must do are not complicated or difficult. Anyone who has gone on a web site and answered questions for one reason or another to a form, knows how to download and install programs to a PC or Mac with the supplied installation wizard, and knows how to hook up an external device with the supplied USB cable will have no difficulty. If you don't have that experience then I recommend you get help from somebody who does. Anyway, when I did it the setup program and the remote recognized all my equipment, including the old Toshiba A2, and the 700 worked perfectly with my equipment the first time I tried it after setup. It has been working perfectly ever since and has totally simplified using the home theater system. Wish I had bought one of these earlier. One suggestion -- if you buy one of these make sure you charge the batteries fully before doing the setup even though it may show there is power available in the batteries. Low power in the remote can cause an improper setup experience and your remote will not work correctly. Enjoy!
