SHAME, SHAME, SHAME
What absolutely brilliant writing. Eckert takes probably the most tumultuous times in the history of the Shawnee Indians and describes with such understanding and emotion and empathy the trial and tribulations that these sects underwent. They were losing the use of their forefathers land, the war chiefs were being killed off at a murderous rate, and Tecumseh, as a young man and later a young warrior and chief was forced to grow up watching his family and tribal members fight a losing battle against the white settlers and colonial militias. His whole world came tumbling down around him and he knew there was nothing he could do to stem the tide. In time, the white man would own all his land and abuse the gifts of a higher being that the Indians had nurtured over untold generations. With his tribe and family decimated, Tecumseh had to throw in with the English and along with what warriors he was able to assemble, this tumultuous conflict comes to his death and the end of a way of life that was so far superior and above the greed of the settlers, militia and army. He died defending his family, land and long held beliefs. He knew the end was coming to life as he once knew it and it was better to die a warrior on the battlefield than succumb to the greed, lies and deceit the Europeans had forced upon the tribes to their ultimate extinction..You had best read the series of 6 books that Allan Eckert wrote in his Making Of America Series. You won't discover the truth in history classes because much like the issue of slavery, much of the facts and heinous actions of the white population have been white washed and rarely taught to the enlightenment of todays' students. And the annihilations of our Native Americans suffered such great distress and abuse.Great story! Great work! Great misdeeds forced upon our Native Americans. And leaders such as Washington, Patrick Henry, and the representatives from all thirteen colonies knew that genocide was being committed upon our Native Americans and all they did was fuel the process at the expense of untold numbers of settlers and Indians. Shame, Shame, Shame. You must slowly read and understand the happenings that took place during this sad time in the opening of the Ohio Territory. A once proud Indian culture was literally destroyed. But these brave Americans died with honor defending the only way of life they had ever known. And if they had to lose their land, their families and their culture, it was better to die defending it than accepting the depraved way of life that the were trying to force upon these Indian nations. The Shawnees were truly the real heroes in this saga and their defense will long outlive the baseless heroics of the white settlers.

A great read
A good, historical book, especially for those wanting to further their knowledge of American history. Without books that give the view of history from a native American perspective we have only a one-sided view...and come to a one-sided opinion.

Fascinating Name
My favorite party question is who was Tecumseh and why is his statute at Annapolis, the Naval Academy and why did Home Depot give his name to a little lawn mower engine? Most claim a vague familiarity with the name but nothing else. Allan Eckert in his wonderful,"narrative history" tells the story of this important Shawnee Indian and his struggle to unify Indian tribes to thesis that the flood of white settlers flooding over the Appilacians into what is now Indiana and Ohio. Tecumseh travelled widely pleading with tribes to unify to no avail. Eckert tells this story in a fascinating way describing Tecumseh's immense abilities and sacrifice. If Inwere King I would decree that every American and those wishing to become American read this and the many other Eckert books which so wonderfully tell the story of early history of this country starting with French and Indian Wars and focusing on the frontier. Meet Simon Kenton a real frontiersman and his experiences. What research and story telling.Tecumseh was a natural leader, with great physical, tactical and diplomatic skills. Read this book and meet him. Why General Sherman took his name as his middle name and why the wide spread respect by his opponents- he was the only Indian leader who forbid the torture of prisoners which was common practice with other Indian leaders.

If Only They Had Listened!
A prophet, a good person, a noble heart, someone who could empathize, someone who understood that complete tribal cohesion and unity was the only way to maintain any sort of power and dignity in the face of the white hoards who came to steal the land, Oh Tecumseh! There should be statues of Tecumseh in every capital building in all the mid-western cities and a monument to him in D.C. But there isn't and there wont be. And this is sad and makes me angry. This is a great book and I'm glad it was written and I'm glad I read it, and I hope it stays in print for many years to come. If any our so called educators had any courage this would be required reading. But they don't and it won't be. I finished this book a month or so ago and I'm still thinking about it-and that is about the highest compliment I can give any book.

Sorrow in MY Heart
I read this book several years ago and fell in love with it. I bought this edition to read on a train trip back to Ohio, into the very lands where much of the stories take place. I like the way it is written like a frontier diary/novel, with accuracy, warmth and depth, giving the reader insight into Native American history up to Tecumseh's death in 1813. Although I've read the book before, and seen the outdoor drama, Tecumseh!, the end always seems to come too soon. It breaks my heart every time. Truly an excellent work!
