Does the scrolling wheel have that clickly feel where it goes "chunk chunk chunk" when you scroll, or is it fluid?

there's a button on the mouse near the wheel...if you push the button down, the mouse moves fluid, if you click the button so up, then it's chunck chunk chunk....ironically that works well for me b/c for some softwares i need chunky, and others i need fluid.

Can you replace the rechargeable batteries?

Yes. It comes with one 2000mAh, AA 1.2-volt re-chargeable battery, which can be re-charged in the mouse using a USB cable, which takes an hour or more. However, I bought a set of four 2200mAh, 1.2-volt batteries with a charger, so, when a battery quits, I install a re-charged one. A 2200mAh battery lasts noticeably longer than the original 2000mAh one.

Can you program the side buttons to specific keystrokes?

You can program all the buttons (9) with the software.

Is wheel click left/right programmable? Little button behind wheel I used to program that. Can that still be done? Wheel still control volume/mute?

Logitech's SetPoint software allows you to reprogram nearly every button (exceptions are the left and right click), including the left/right action of the mouse wheel. The button behind the wheel activates a mechanical 'brake' which toggles the wheel between free-spinning (frictionless) operation and traditional 'clicky' scrolling; it is not software programmable.
