This book should be a must for all art teachers and I would highly recommend it to teachers of "core" or "traditional" subjects as well. The authors suggest using the puzzles of contemporary artists and artworks as the entry point for getting students to discuss and grapple with the key features in different areas of learning (science, social sciences, history, geography, writing, math and yes, visual art). Upon approaching this text, I was afraid that I may find areas or topics boring or tough to access but the writing is engaging and stays at a level that encourages the reader to continue.For those teachers being asked to make cross-curricular partnerships, this book is helpful as each chapter does an elegant job of describing the essential understandings for each field of knowledge and offering samples of which artists could begin these conversations. At the end are some samples of potential projects that can be used immediately or seen as exemplars from which to build and develop.Finally, as an art teacher at a school embracing inquiry and critical thinking strategies I found that this book answered a lot of my questions on how to scaffold and support the learning that my administration is asking for without stifling creativity. Those areas of the text I plan to share with my admin so that we have a shared understanding of how the art room should work.
