Q: Does the lead break often? - Compared to Dixon Ticonderoga Pencils which don't break much, while those cheep "fun" pencils break all the time.

I don't have numbers for you (breakage per pencil?), but (like you) I appreciate the high quality of the Ticonderoga.I have heard that breakage is mostly due to vibrations shattering the graphite inside the pencil, such as when you drop a pencil on the floor. I will say that the paper wrapped around the graphite core should help to both absorb vibrations from the graphite and provide a sturdy, consistent body to support the graphite. In my experience, breakage usually happens when sharpening, presumably because the sharpener wobbles or stresses the graphite, especially when I have to press hard with a cheap (plastic body) blade sharpener. I should warn that sharpening the pencil's paper shaft may feel a little strange compared to the wood pencils you are used to, so you may need to be gentle at first until you get used to that. Also, if your lead breaks while sharpening, consider getting a higher-quality (metal body?) sharpener.

Q: What is the hardness of the graphite? I need a dark pencil.

No number on the pencil, but seems to be roughly #3. For a truly dark pencil this isn't it. But for day to day use, these have been very good.

Q: What packaging material is currently being used? It’s pictured in cardboard, but several customers have reported it being packaged in plastic.

Mine was packaged in cardboard.
