Yes, they are padded and curve inward so it won't fall off easy.

Q: is this the 21 L or the 17L?

Actually I'm not sure, I removed the tag when I got it, but I think it's 17L. Frankly, I've been used it for 1 week, I don't really recommend you to buy it. The zippers are not well-made, so cannot open them by one hand. The phone pocket is too small for phones and has to be closed always, otherwise everything inside will be fallen down. The straps are too short and non-adjustable (I'm 162/45), so when you crouch down to tie the shoes, the bag will hit your head, and you cannot take your phones out when two straps on the back. My suggestion is to save up, the bag is not worth the money.
