The wheels are not close by to measure however if you look at all the photos on the listing it shows that the wheel is 3" x 1.02".

Do these work on standard wire shelving units?

I used them on a wood table, I don't think they will work on wire shelves

Many imported furniture and mobile items come with M8-1.25 Threaded Casters and you can replace them without the needing the inserts. If you are installing them on a new wood table or cabinet for instance, yes, you would drill holes for the inserts.
