Product Description The sequel to the action-comedy hit RED, which reunites our team of retired CIA operatives as they use their old-school style to take on a new set of enemies all across Europe. desertcart.com A very safe sequel bet with a cast of friendly, recognizable, and bankable stars, RED 2 is a breezy romp of global espionage and superhero superspies where the wealth of violence is played for laughs and the sly grins stay firmly planted on the faces of everyone involved. As fans of 2010's RED will fondly remember, the hero characters are from the AARP generation, which is also what drives the primary conceptual joke and defines the title acronym: Retired, Extremely Dangerous. In round two, former secret agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is drawn out of retirement (again) by his former cohort Marvin (John Malkovich, acting Malkovich-crazy and loving it) to service a plot that involves a Cold War-era nuclear bomb hidden in Russia and the international effort to retrieve it. Frank is now romantically partnered with RED's sweet Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker, also a comic delight), who wants to follow him into the fray and turns out to be pretty good at the dangerous game of spycraft. Also returning from not really being retired are the icy MI-6 assassin Victoria (Helen Mirren) and the lusty Russian spy chief Ivan (Brian Cox). Their priceless scene together captures a bucolic picnic where automatic weapons and silk stockings are the main course. New to this edition is Katja (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Ivan's best operative and a former flame of Frank, and Han Cho Bai (Byung-hun Lee), a Korean hit man on Frank's list partly because he's been ordered to kill him, but mostly because he's mad that Frank stole his private jet. Everyone's motives are purposely muddled, but they all put aside personal grudges and professional kill orders to join forces against the doomsday device. It was created and hidden by a batty professor who's been locked away in a London psychiatric hospital for almost 40 years. Fortunately this caricature is played by Anthony Hopkins, who brings all the acting tics and crazy-old-British-guy mannerisms he can as both hero and villain. The mechanics of story don't much matter when the purpose is zingy one-liners and the comic timing is spot on. There's a ton of bloodless violence--most of which is also played for laughs--and a menacing American agent played by Neal McDonough who seems to be the only humorless one in the whole bunch. He's also the only truly scary one, which does not bode well for his character. All the leads are given their own scene-stealing moments, with each playing according to their strengths (and probably for a nice "what the heck?" paycheck). The physical and verbal interplay among them cascades trippingly off the tongue in snappy dialogue and bits of business that seem effortless for these pros. Helen Mirren wears diamonds and fur while wielding a grenade launcher; John Malkovich makes the most lovable psychopath ever; Anthony Hopkins is both befuddled and conniving; and Bruce Willis makes violent screwball comedy look easy, especially with the impeccable help of Mary-Louise Parker. The RED franchise is a nice crossover success for Hollywood, with a built-in audience of the over-50 set, and the core youth demographic happy to watch grandma- and grandpa-types blow up and shoot things to their hearts' content. --Ted Fry Review: Awesome movie - Bruce Willis that enough said never disappoints all are great a must have dvd. Review: A Wonderful Diversion, Good for Friday Night - This is obviously a follow-on to the original Red with many of the same cast members, but adding Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Mary-Louise Parker. Red and Red 2 are similar in concept to the action movies with older casts, such as Expendables and also reaching back to Space Cowboys. This is an action comedy involving a group of active and "retired" international assassins trying to kill one of their own and find a bomb as well. The plot, which is more of a romp through London and Paris, revolves around an ensemble of very likeable characters with some very funny toss-off lines. Lots of action (gunfire, chase scenes, and did I say gunfire?) and lots of very good special effects with help from IL&M. Anthony Hopkins delivered (as usual) a very high quality performance as one of the more serious characters in the ensemble. Helen Mirren was also excellent and deadpan funny again in her role. John Malkovich was entertaining again in his crazy character role. Overall, very enjoyable actors, enjoyable characters and a fun action film.

Oh What Fun!
Take a million bullets, several chases, a dozen twists, a plot that races along at a hundred miles an hour, some subtle humour (watch for the Hopkins scene with reference to Silence of the Lambs,) and some superb action driven by great actors and actresses (Malkovich and Hopkins are outrageously good, and Mirren is just pure class - with a touch of psychopath), and oh what fun this film is. A rare treat that is actually better than the original and for my money far better than many of its genre.

Ernest Borgnine's bit parts added to that story line nicely.
Excellent ensemble of actors. Action & tongue in cheek humor.

This movie has it all. Great acting/writing/action/comedy
This movie was a lot of fun. Most sequels never live up to the original. In my opinion, Red 2 is much better than the first movie. What I liked most was the mix of comedy and action. It was consistent throughout the movie and everything blended smoothly. Synopsis: Frank Moses/Willis has a new life with his girlfriend Sarah/ML Parker but is sidetracked when the government puts out a hit on him and Marvin/Malkovich and declares them terrorist. Apparently Frank and Marvin had some involvement regarding a project during WWII called "Nightshade." Moses and crew are thrust into a wild ride across the planet to fix everything. Action: Fight scenes are great and well done. An excellent car chase. Several gun battles. All the main actors in this movie get their chance to shine.I really enjoyed watching VIctoria/Mirren. She totally kicks butt and can handle her guns. Han/Byung-hun Lee adds a little KungFu action. Acting/Writing: Most of the time I separate acting and writing. Not this time. Usually, when a lot of top notch actors get together, the movie suffers in many other areas, especially writing. Not in this movie. Everyone worked well together. Everyone got their funny moments and there were plenty. Unlike a lot of movies I have watched recently, this movie did not have to rely upon vulgarity nor profanity. Family friendly: Very little cursing. Lots of killing/shooting/fighting. No nekkid people nor sexual stuff. So, basically the violence is the worst. If I had to pick one negative about this movie it would be Sarah/Parker. I found her to be a wee bit annoying. She seemed out of place. This movie is well worth the rental. One of the better movies I have seen this year. I rarely give 5 stars to a movie, However, since this movie shines above the competition with great acting/writing/action, it is getting the full 5.

No thought required, a ridiculous romp
This was cued up after RED, as the first one in the pairing was a delightfully ridiculous romp with lovely acting. Bruce Willis - while still not quite believable as retired - is lovely as ever. Helen Mirren, ups her game as wonderfully efficient with any weapons and the most adult of the hypothetical retired adults. John Malkovich is amazing as an unhinged, sometimes unwilling part of the team. That's not enough yet? How about the legend Anthony Hopkins. A great, silly diversion.
