Are traditional banks just producing faster horses?
According to Skinner, many banks are changing but in the wrong way, because they are trying to evolve its old way of doing things from industrial to digital without fundamental rethinking. They have not realized there is a need for drastic, transformational change, not just an evolution of what has been around before. Those banks, Skinner points out, are grappling with making faster banks (horses) while the new players (e.g., FinTechs, challenger banks, and BigTechs) are trying to create new business models (cars). Banks are trying to retrofit new technologies to their existing trade structures and processes and are adding digital as just as a function. Rather, they should be transforming their business models from merely processing paper to managing data. Digital services should be a core competency, not just another channel. All in all, Doing Digital by Chris Skinner is an indispensable and insightful guide for leaders in traditional financial services firms who are thinking about how to implement their digital transformation programs.

Digital is leadership
Chris does it again with Doing Digital. It's becoming even more clear during the corona-crisis that digital leadership is simply just leadership today. Chris took more of a case study approach to leadership in Doing Digital, but in doing so he also exposed his frustrations with incumbent banks who have simply just been too slow or have satisfied themselves with just paying lip service to digital transformation. Chris' conclusions are straightforward - that won't cut it any longer. A proactive and relentless focus is needed today. If you're in banking, as you read this you'll find yourself agreeing over and over again with Chris' observations. But it takes some like Chris to point out that the industry simply isn't moving fast enough.

Assessing what the big old banks are doing to deal with competition
Very good for those who want to assess what the incumbents are doing to deal with digital banks! As there are lots of literature about digital banks and fintechs and few about how the incumbents are dealing with that i recommend the book.
