Works Well
Bought this part to solve a CEL that's been nagging me for a few weeks, DTC code p0456 very small EVAP system leak. These very small leaks are usually due to loose gas caps but this one kept coming back no matter how much I tightened my fuel cap so I did some research on the internet and found Nissans among others are prone to having this vent control valve fail. The part hangs off the charcoal canister underneath the rear passenger side of my 09 Murano and is accessible without putting the vehicle on a lift. I popped my OEM unit out, no tools needed, cleaned it up and tested the spring which moved easily. I then checked for continuity across the electrical terminals and that also checked out fine. So next I put a 12 volt power source on it and --- nothing, the solenoid was dead. Bingo.Nissan has apparently had a lot of issues with these in various vehicles and has even redesigned the unit a couple of times. This Dorman part looks a lot like Nissan's latest redesign but for around half the cost. The older version is still available, Dorman part number 911-503, for around fifteen bucks less but I figured I might as well update it while I'm at it. The old part was 100% plastic, this newer version has a metal body surrounded by a plastic shell apparently in an effort to make it more durable and resistant to damage.Refitting the new part took some effort. The rubber o-ring doesn't seem to want to compress enough to allow the part to slide into the charcoal canister and engage the tab locks. After quite a bit of fiddling and cursing I ended up lubing the o-ring and the part slid right in. Quarter turn to the right, refit the hose and electrical connector and you're done. I cleared my DTC codes and drove the car a bit then let it sit for awhile so it could run its EVAP system pressure test. Couple hours later I checked and all monitors showed ready to go with no codes. Problem solved.Don't worry about ordering a non-OEM part, this Dorman unit seems to be built well and really can't be any worse than the failure prone Nissan unit. One complaint and this has more to do with Amazon's delivery policy. Most items I order from the internet that get shipped from Southern California to my home in Northern California take at most 1 or 2 days to get delivered regardless of whether I select economy ground shipping or something more expensive. But Amazon's economy shipping took 8 full days to deliver this item. I could have walked the item from L.A. to my home in 8 days. It's as if they're deliberately dragging their feet and delivering more slowly because I live too close to the shipping point and they want to get me to pay extra for express shipping. I don't know of any other retailer who does this sort of thing.
