I had an asus o'play until its' remote died. now i have nothing. does this unit work without the remote, and if it does i'll buy one.

As far as I know, no it does not. And the remote is small and fairly easy to lose track of.

Why in the world is this selling for $300+?

when I bought mine that was the going price. I have bought a lower-priced model sense and I prefer this one

What is the memory for this system? If a buy the streaming media players, are they able to play my files from an external?

I would not recommend this one as this is an old model, I would recommend to get a newer model, there is one with no internal memory which I have and use to watch media from my external drives, it comes with internal wifi and services such as netflix (additional signup required) among others.

will it play from Seagate 4TB backup plus ext hd?

The problem I found with this is that most TVs only have 2T memory,,, and regardless how big your ext HD is,, the TV will crash after reaching it's 2T limit. So your max ext HD memory has to be 2T.... Box works fine though
