Once the batteries are drained you can still continue using the headset but without the features that require battery power. yes, the wireless adapter it comes with will pair it easily.

Q: Do all functions work on playstation 4? specifically the ability to control voice/chat volume. this is the most important function for me to purchas.

This will depend on how you will connect your PS4. The Ability to Control voice/chat volume will only work if you're using the USB Wireless dongle to connect to your PS4.
