From the legendary Tank Girl to live-action animations with Gorillaz , a Chinese contemporary opera to an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, artist Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic figures of contemporary pop culture . With influences ranging from hip hop to zombie slasher movies, Hewlett emerged in the mid-1990s as co-creator of the zeitgeist-defining Tank Girl comic. With then-roommate Damon Albarn, he went on to create the groundbreaking cartoon band Gorillaz . The award-winning virtual pop group of animated characters is a truly global phenomenon. Gorillaz have topped charts around the world, toured the globe from San Diego to Syria, and picked up hundreds of millions of streams and record sales along the way. Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. In 2006, he was named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a BAFTA for their animated Monkey sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2015 The Suggestionists , an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London, demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett’s practice. This special edition celebrating TASCHEN’s 40th anniversary updates Hewlett’s first major monograph with around 30 brand new pieces . The book illustrates his thrilling creative journey with more than 400 artworks from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz and up to the present day . Through stories, characters, strips, and sketches, we trace Hewlett’s exceptional capacity for invention and celebrate a polymath artist who refuses to rest on his laurels , or to be pigeonholed into a particular practice. Review: More pages but overall size is smaller than multilingual edition of the book - I bought the Multilingual Edition of the book for my brother since we're both Gorillaz fans and we love the artwork. That edition wasn't so much a book as it was a TOME. It was quite impressive. When I saw the 40th Anniversary Edition and it came with even more artwork, I knew I had to get a copy for myself. The book is high quality like the previous edition, but is far more compact. I don't know which size I prefer, to be honest. With this smaller size, I'd be more inclined to look through it since it takes up less desk-space, but the Tome's size makes it far more impressive, especially as a coffee table book. The 40th Edition book is definitely 5-star worthy, but keep in mind it's also the Compact Edition. Want the book to be more like most art books? Try to get your hands on the Multilingual Edition. The compact edition's measurements are 9x6.5 inches. After rereading my review, it looks like I'm talking about something other than art books lol. Review: Happily adding to my growing collection of art books.... - I have not gone through it all but from appearances alone, it's beautiful. The pics are vibrant and gorgeous. Not much wording. Artwork is abundant. It's a hefty book and although I would prefer for it to be larger in height I think it suits the volume of pages because anything more would be too difficult to hold. Nothing something you can carry around, it's great for displaying and viewing. There is a larger option and that book I believe is massive so if you want to see the artwork in a larger format I'd go with that one and the higher price. This one is affordable and still lovely. I am not a fan of the french flap that goes over the pages from the opening. It gets in the way a lot when I am trying to sift through the book. That's a real annoyance but it is nothing that makes me regret my purchase. Delivery was good. We had a snow event in Texas that caused an overall delay in everything so instead of my prime purchase arriving the next day or two days later it took a week which was fine because Prime was transparent about that.

Incredible art book
Absolutely gorgeous collection of art from Hewlett's entire career. A must-have for fans of his work. Chapters collected in roughly chronological order sorted by project, with some miscellaneous sketches/smaller projects toward the end.

Great book
It's great, the paper quality is awesome and pictures don't make justice for the images themselves. My only gripe with the book is that the end paper is sewn together with a bookmark, and that also works as a sleeve for the pages. In concept is a good idea but when you move further on the reading it makes the experience clumsy as the bookmark and sleeve folds and it kinda ruins the aesthetic for the book. All and all: it's a great book, it delivers as it's supposed to

Really inspiring.
The first time I saw Jamie's work was in that one Gorillaz music video with Del. I liked the look of it, but never thought too much of it. It was a cool idea, the cartoon characters, but I pretty much left it at that. It wasn't until I saw a review of this book online that I really saw Jamie for the artist that he is. This book has so much in it, but the element that tipped the scales for me and got me to spring for this book was the tree drawings. It's amazing how you can see an artists "hand" in much of the minutia of what they create, even the bark patterns in trees. Go ahead and get this book. Leave it out for others to enjoy, too. The images range all over the place, and they are really well imagined and created.
