It Was Okay
Nothing to great or to terrible stood out about this book, to be honest. I picked up on a lot of great information that I didn't know about initially, but in terms of the book trying to apply the information to the program, it was underwhelming to say the least. My advice is if you're absolutely new to GM:S, get this book while it's on sale (the price tag isn't justified, to be honest) otherwise look somewhere else for more advance and indepth information.

Pretty good for starting out
This book had plenty of information for beginners, and it was good for a review of the basics. It leaves a little something to be desired though.

This is THE book you need if you are starting to learn GameMaker. I love this book!

Out of Date
If you are using an older version of GMS this is a good book, but for current versions this information is very out of date and in some instances unusable.

Great book. It does require a lot of reading before any hands on activities.

5/5 - Excellent Resource for GameMaker Users
GameMaker EssentialsPublisher Link: https://www.packtpub.com/game-development/gamemaker-essentials/?utm_source=RajB&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=17843961255/5 - Author has vast experience on the subject matterThis book is laid out very well, has a lot of different sections that pack a punch at just 154 pages. I love how the book starts off with the foundation work with layering the various components of a game and then puts them into use with making an actual game. The book also takes it a step further and goes into promoting your game and making some money at the same time. If you're serious about making a game and want to use a framework that has boiled down the elements of game creation into one tight IDE then grab a copy of this book, brew some coffee, and get into this book. Highly recommended especially for any teens that are looking for a hobby and have a desire in video games and how they work.

A thorough and well-organized guide book for GameMaker: Studio
After being inspired by a few indie games made in GameMaker: Studio (e.g. Hotline Miami, Undertale, etc.), I felt compelled to purchase a copy of the software myself. I also wanted to have a decent GameMaker guide book on hand so to give myself a head start. Eventually, I settled for Nathan Auckett's "GameMaker Essentials".As its title implies, this book was made to teach game designers (old and new) the basics of GameMaker: Studio and its various tools (e.g. drag-and-drop functionality, GameMaker Language Programming, etc.). It covers a wide range of topics (e.g. resource management, sprite creation, programming, etc.) and clearly explains almost every important aspect (e.g. installation, usage, etc.) of GameMaker in detail. Plus, the tutorials in the book are complemented with screenshots from the software itself. This makes it quick and easy for people who bought GameMaker to learn their way around while they read.As a game designer myself, I found learning the ropes of the software fairly simple especially when programming with GML (which is reportedly easier to work with than most programming languages). I spent each day reading and taking notes from a chapter (two days for "Chapter 5: The GameMaker Language"). And, by the time I reached "Chapter 7: Making a Game" and its tutorial(s), I was able to program a simple but functional Atari-esque game within two hours! It's nothing to brag about presentation-wise but it made for a fresh start on the programming side! However, I must stress that this book only teaches the essentials of GameMaker: Studio. Unfortunately, it doesn't focus on any advanced tools or feature a list of useful GML codes for reference. For instance, I was hoping that this book would teach me how to program a game using a mouse. But, much to my dismay, all of the tutorials focused on programming games using keyboard keys. So, all in all, I'd consider this a thorough and well-organized guide book that is perfect for all newcomers to GameMaker: Studio. However, it only teaches you the basics of the software and hardly anything else.

An introduction to GameMaker
I am totally new to GameMaker, so I bought this book as a easy to follow introduction to GameMaker, and this is what it is : An easy to read introduction to GameMaker and I read it in a week before I even bought GameMaker. The book doesn't says its anything more than a beginner book, so I wont complain about this, because I got exactly what I expected, and the second hand price was fine. However I have since bought several other books about GameMaker, and now that I actually have a background with programming different programming languages I must say that I personally didn't need this book at all. If you already know how to program a programming language I would suggest that you at least take a look at the book by Benjamin Anderson called GameMaker Language - An InDepth Guide. If you don't have experience with programming and would like a book to read while sitting outside in the garden without a computer with internet video tutorials, or read a chapter in bed before you go to sleep, then the book is just fine.
