I've been using this external SSD for over a year now to back up data from my laptop and phone. It works great for that purpose! It's given me a lot of peace of mind, since I don't have to worry about losing my photos, documents, etc. if something were to happen to my phone or laptop. Pros! - It's manufactured well. It feels fairly durable, and it's held up great over the year that I've used it. I like the blue color, too! - The 2 TB of storage have allowed me to back up basically whatever I want without worrying about running out of space. - It has pretty fast speeds for transferring data, sometimes upwards of 200 megabytes per second, which saves time during large file transfers. - It's compact and doesn't weigh much! It fits in the palm of my hand, so if I wanted to I could take it on the go. - Comes with two cords, one USB C and one USB A! I use the USB C cord usually, but the USB A cord is a nice option. - Works on most devices! I've used it on both my Windows laptop and my Samsung phone no problem. As long as the device has a USB 3.0 port or a USB C port, this SSD should work! Cons! - This isn't really a con for the SSD itself, but it encourages you to use the Samsung Magician app with it. The app has some nice features including tests to verify that the SSD is working well, but on my laptop the app would be using the SSD even when I'm not. It was a bit of a headache when I'd go to eject the SSD safely. I just changed the app's settings so that it doesn't launch on startup and that fixed it, but that might be good to keep in mind if you plan on using the SSD on a PC and want to use the app. Overall, this SSD was a great buy for me! I'm very happy with it. I'll definitely consider Samsung's SSDs in the future if I'm in the market for something like this again.

The T7 was received in Fat32 Format with MBR Partition. I'm using this as a backup drive for a Win 11 Pro Desktop PC, so the first thing I did was reformat the Drive as NTFS with GPT partitions which is better suited for the Win 10/11 OS. With that out of the way, I turned to the provided USB C to C cable, it looks like good quality, however it's only 1 1/2ft long, too short for my needs, for I'm mounting the drive forward on the right side of my case, thus I picked up a 3.3ft USB C to C 3.2 Gen2 Cable (to insure the cable is up to speed with the SSD's capabilities) The drive itself I slipped into a Portable Hard Drive Sleeve that mounts to the side of my case. This is an ideal setup, it protects the SSD and secures it's position without fear of it being knocked to the floor, cable being disconnected or the SSD being misplaced for that matter. You never know, it is small and thin. Performance is as expected. It reads and writes IAW specs, about 10x faster than the HDD it replaced. When being accessed the highest temps, I've seen hovered around 42C, well below the 70C max you'll hate to see before thermal throttling kicks in. I expect this drive to have excellent longevity, just as I have achieved with a pair of Samsung M.2 PCIe's. Of course, length of service is dependent upon the quantity of processed data. For anyone in the market for a fast, high quality and reliable SSD storage device, I don't think you can go wrong making the Samsung T7 your choice.

Amazon fulfilled the order flawlessly with quick shipping (as soon as it was available), acceptable packaging, and accurate tracking updates. The Samsung T7 2TB SSD is incredibly fast and highly versatile across computers, tablets, and phones using its included USB-C and USB-A cables. Its premium, lightweight aluminum unibody dissipates heat efficiently while offering sturdy physical protection. Note that by default, the drive ships partitioned in MBR (Master Boot Record) to ensure legacy compatibility with very old operating systems. However, to avoid partition size constraints and optimize performance on modern systems, you should (or in the most cases even have to) format and transfer it to a GPT (GUID Partition Map) style layout before using it. Overall, it is a highly reliable drive that saves substantial time during large data transfers.

Out of the box, the drive includes Samsung Magician software preloaded. Initially, I thought—great! A handy backup and data migration tool to move files between my computer and the drive. Nope. What I got was essentially a blank screen. I downloaded and installed the software manually, only to be told I needed to update it—again. So, it downloaded a full version and reinstalled itself over the one I had just installed. Why, Samsung? For those who aren’t tech-savvy, I’d strongly recommend skipping this software. It scans all drives, including internal SSD/NVMe drives with operating systems on them. One careless click, and you could accidentally wipe your OS. In my opinion, this software is little more than an ad delivery platform and data collection tool. There are plenty of free alternatives that are safer and far more effective—I personally use FreeFileSync. It’s disappointing to see a major brand like Samsung ship software that feels half-baked and borderline risky. Hopefully, the hardware performs better than the software bundled with it. Now, on to speed tests: Samsung advertises “Speeds up to 1,050MB/s via USB 3.2 Gen 2”. The key phrase here is “up to.” My laptop supports these specs, so I tested accordingly. Using the USB C cable I got 966 MB/s read and 829 MB/s write speed. My older desktop motherboard is gen 1 and gets half the write speed on a USB c Cable. Getting the higher speed depends on your hardware and using the correct cables. Using the supplied USB-A to USB-C cable: I got 40 MB/s write speeds — painfully slow. Using the USB-C to USB-C cable: Write speeds reached 428 MB/s — still less than half of the advertised performance. This was the limits of my hardware on my desktop. The Good: Speeds as advertised. Compact form factor. Fits easily in a pocket. I basically bought this for the size and metal casing. Build feels solid. It is typical cheap consumer memory that everyone else makes. Nothing special. It gets really hot under workload. I am guessing the metal casing is used to try to keep it cool. We will see how long this lasts.

I now own several generations (and 3 colors!) of Samsung T SSDs- T3, T5, T7 plus the Shield version. They've been my long-time go-to, especially as prices come down and file sizes go up. Thin-sliced from my 1st review: It's an easy-to-use and very secure little device, fast and simple to use across devices and even systems, as plugging in it opens a choice of OS and a window to log-in. The password is always what you assign at set-up, and it's hard-wired into the device, so it stays secure, requiring password every time it's first connected. Tech specs you can read. It's fast, blazing when connected to other SSD's. Gets a little toasty with huge transfers (like my 1GB initial transfer from another drive). It comes with two types of USB cables, which work well, and secure it well even if pulled around a bit on its short length. I'd note that the T7 Shield is an exception, consistently coming (in my experience) with a poorly designed connector/receptacle, nearly impossible to keep a solid connection unless you don't breathe or vibrate things when you type. That bad. I digress. This - the basic T7 (newer software interface but basically same as T5 - is one of those things that "just works". Like the others, on the Mac it may hava some small quirks - like saying it's disconnected when you first connect, or similar, but it works fine, 100% of the time for me thus far, all of them (knock on wood). Unless you really truly like the idea of the ridged design and heat-dissipation of the Shield, I'd advise against it (I called Samsung, they said they'd send a new cord, and didn't, and claim not to know about the port/plug issue). That off my chest, I love and swear by the T5s and T7s, and caveat emptor on the Shields.

Product: 2TB Samsung Non-touch Blue Colour Portable SSD The T7 came in a nicely sealed box. I was quite surprised that the product was manufactured in South Korea. The box includes 2 USB cables, one manual, and the T7 device. It comes with 1 USB-C to USB-C cable, capable of delivering up to 10Gbps, and a USB-C to USB 3 cable. Both cables are about 40 cm long and the construction is very well built. I have no doubt they will last many years unless I exert some great physical abuse. Both cables fit very snuggly in the T7 body. Even if you are the type of person who likes to hang the SSD in the mid-air, I am certain that the device won't fall off unless you intentionally pull it off. The device is very light. According to Samsung, T7 only weight 58 grams. It is a size of a credit card and about the same thickness of an iPhone 8. The SSD is enclosed in a solid metal body. I believe the metal body was used to dissipate heat faster to reduce throttling caused by heat. The main reason why I purchased T7 without the fingerprint sensor is because of the price difference for technology that I will not be using. In order to use the fingerprint sensor, you need to encrypt the device using Samsung's application. The Samsung application will do the hardware encryption, which was notoriously known for its vulnerability to attackers. I am sure that Samsung fixed this bypass but I will stick to the more secure APFS encryption. I had some trouble installing the Samsung application on my Mac. When I launched the application, the software was not able to recognize my SSD. After many troubleshooting, I found out the Samsung SSD had to be formatted in APFS (non-encrypted) file system in order to be recognized. After formatting, I was able to do the hardware encryption with the application. The performance of the device was solid. When hardware encrypted, it had no performance hit compared to having no encryption. However, after using the device for 30 minutes, I have noticed some degradation in performance due to throttling caused by heat. On average, it was hitting 890MB write and 900MB read speed. With some throttling, this number went down to 850MB wite but still respectable 900MB read speed. With Apple's APFS Encryption, the performance had about 20 to 23 percent hit. Compared to my SanDisk Extreme SSD, the device is slightly cooler to touch. Form factors are about same, where SanDisk is slightly longer but narrower compared to Samsung T7. Overall, given the robust construction, solid performance, and small form factor, I am giving it 5 stars.

Using this as a backup drive for photos - fast and easy to set up and comes with password protection. Arrived very quickly and comes with Android, Mac and Windows software. Light and compact - good product but a bit pricey.
