Will a 3.2 gen 1 header on motherboard work with the gen 2 type c port on the case?

It is all a bit confusing. They renamed the former USB 3.0 to now call it USB 3.2 Gen 1. That is the big connector (19 pin/20 pin plug with the notch in one side) that connects to the USB 3 port on most motherboards. My new NZXT case with a type C USB port on the front has a cable with a much smaller connector on the end. It doesn't fit into the usual USB 3.0 socket on the motherboard. My Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro motherboard does have a USB type C header (with USB 3.1 Gen 1 Support) that matches the cable plug. So, you need that USB type C header on your motherboard. It is small. If you have one, then plug it in. If you don't have one on your motherboard, then you would need an adapter to be able to plug the cable into the usual USB 3.0 (19/20 pin) header.

Is this a good case for my son to build his own quality gaming PC?

I know you left this a year ago but for other future customers. Make sure you're getting a case to match the form factor of the motherboard planned for the build. Mini itx is significantly smaller than micro ATX which is the most popular. If you want to build your first PC or want to help somebody build their first a micro ATX PC makes more sense.

Will the gigabyte b450m micro atx motherboard fit with this case?

No, this case fits Mini ITX. The H510i (or 710) will fit a Micro ATX board though.

I see questions of whether rtx cards will fit, but how bad is the card starved of air? it looks like the card would hug the psu cover very tightly

If you’re spending rtx money step up to something with more vents on top so you can exhaust your hot air out better. The c mesh has pretty good airflow
