If you do, review or teach SEM, you already know that Kline's book, now in a 4th edition, is a must on your bookshelf. If you are learning SEM, the book might be a little light on "how-to" but there is YT and other resources for that --- you're getting a compendium of knowledge to start from, rather than having to read the original articles like the old-timers.There also is excellent introductory coverage to advanced topics, such as latent growth (which have texts of their own). Sufficient introduction to mediation & moderation, with reference to classics as well as contemporaries (e.g., Baron Kenny, Preacher, Hayes).Companion support includes syntax and output (available at the publisher) for, amos, laavan, eqs, mplus, lisrel, spss, & stata, although varies depending on software & application (e.g., interaction, mplus only).Materials are presented in a way that is relatively agnostic for the domain of application. In other words, if you're researching in a specific discipline, say hospitality, you gotta know the expectations of your discipline. But the foundational materials for SEM -- as well as classic cites -- appear in Kline. Learn SEM and then understand it in your own field.One of the best purchases I ever made to support my own research. I probably "do" SEM every couple of years or so for a manuscript, and I always come back to Kline. I also am preparing for a long-distance move and severely reducing my physical books or switching to ebooks. My hard copy of Kline "made the cut" and is taking the trip. ;) Other hard-copies moving with me -- Hair's PLS, Hayes mediation/moderation, my first communion bible -- to give you a sense of how "prized" the book is to me.Overall, simply outstanding. A+. I might just purchase the 5th edition.

While the content is excellent and authoritative, the author might do well to remember what it was like to sit in a class trying to learn a new and complex subject. Explaining a complex subject in a way that people can follow along is underrated.

Great book for SEM, but it can be really really really really dry. Also, I had a real hard time caring about most of the examples.The explanation of path theory was randomly dense and unintelligible. They are definitely not writing for neophytes.

This is becoming the classic work on SEM in the docuss as l sciences.

I've read multiple stats books, and although the authors attempts to make it easy/fun to follow, it isn't always the case.

Kline ist in seiner aktuellsten Auflage eine wahre Goldgrube für jeden Psychologen oder Psychologiestudenten.Da wäre zum Einen, dass, wie so häufig, englische Fachliteratur in vielen Fällen deutlich angenehmer zu lesen ist als die deutschsprachigenPendandts. Wo sich Bortz oder Eid, Gollwitzer und Schmidt in ihren typisch gestelzten Akademiker-Schachtelsätzen verirren, besticht einBuch wie dieses von Kline durch eine wirklich angenehm lebensnahe Schreibweise, die ohne viel Effekthascherei klar eine Thematik auf den Punkt bringt.Hier spürt man schon in der Rhetorik keine elitäre Abgehobenheit sondern hat den Eindruck, als würde der nette Herr direkt vor einem sitzen und in einem entspannten Gespräch sein Wissen preisgeben. Aber auch fachlich zählt das Buch von Kline zum Anderen zu den Werken, die einen wirklich weiter bringen und für zahlreiche Aha-Effekte sorgen. Es ist eine wahre Wonne, dieses Buch zu lesen.Seine unglaublich klaren und erhellenden Ausführungen über "p values" allein sollten Pflichtprogramm für jeden Psychologen oder Psychologiestudenten sein. Hier können selbst alte Hasen noch viel mitnehmen. Man merkt, dass man hier am Puls der Zeit Trends mitbekommt, die für eine ethisch verantwortliches Handeln eines Psychologen essenziell sind und die in unserer Profession wichtigen Fragen beantworten: Wie sicher und gesichert können unsere Aussagen sein, sprich, wie gut ist unsere Methodik?Dies ist umso bedeutender, da gerade im Reich der Strukturgleichungsmodelle mitunter bereits Wildwest-Zustände existiert haben, vorangetrieben auch vor allem durch die Machbarkeit: Programme wie AMOS verleiten dazu, verantwortungslos umherzuklicken, bis der model-fit endlich "stimmt". Von theoriegeleiteter Vorgehensweise ist bei manchen Anwendern schnell nichts mehr zu merken, es wird gebastelt was die Modifikationsindizes hergeben. Eine Erklärung für Anpassungen wird dann im Paper bei solchen Autoren vermutlich entweder gar nicht gegeben oder die Anpassung schlicht verschwiegen. Beim Anblick manch einschlägiger YouTube-Tutorials können einem in der Hinsicht schon die Haare zu Berge stehen. Erschreckend, mit welch Selbstverständlichkeit manche da ein Vertrauen in die Software an den Tag legen, nach welchem eben dieser de facto das Denken anvertraut wird. Kline stellt sich dem als gutes Vorbild und Autor entschieden entgegen und gibt dem Anwender best practices an die Hand, die wirklich das verdichten, was in der Praxis zählt. Vorbildlich!!!Das Buch ist in meinen Augen damit nicht nur das Beste Einführungswerk über Strukturgleichungsmodelle, sondern hat jedem mit fortgeschrittenen Statistik- und Methodikkenntnissen viel zu bieten.Damit ist aber auch gleichzeitig zu betonen, dass entsprechende Vorkenntnisse unabdingbar sind. Wir haben es hier im Falle der Strukturgleichungsmodelle letztlich mit einer anspruchsvollen Technik zu tun, welche die Kenntnis zahlreicher assoziierter Themenbereiche als unabdingbar voraussetzt.Auch sollte man bereits gewisse Kenntnisse über Strukturgleichungsmodelle mitbringen. Mit anderen Worten: Man sollte eine grundsätzliche Vorstellung davon haben, was hier überhaupt gemacht wird und warum. Das Verständnis von grundlegenden Begriffen der für Psychologen relevanten Statistik wird dabei als selbstverständlich vorausgesetzt und so sollte es auch sein, wenn man mit einer solch mächtigen Technik (die eben auch so viele Fallstricke bietet) arbeitet. Wer aber davor nicht zurückscheut und Spaß an neuen Perspektiven auf methodische Fragestellungen mitbringt, wird sehr viel Freude an diesem ausgesprochen hilfreichen Buch haben. Man kann das Buch zudem wunderbar mit den einschlägigen Büchern von Barbara Byrne kombinieren, die softwarespezifisch anwendungsorientierte Bücher zum Thema geschrieben hat. Mit einer solchen Kombination sollte man gut gerüstet sein für den Start in die Arbeit mit Strukturgleichungsmodellen.

I got this book as part of an SEM course.I have mixed feelings about the book. On the one hand, it had lots of information; but was equally missing information as well (relative to the course). I eventually stopped reading the book.In the end, the book was good, and I will keep it for a long time. But, it did not provide for good learning material, or comprehensive material in the state of the art SEM.

If you're going to read only a singke book on SEM, this should be the one! It's way more complete and more detailed than all the other books on the subject I've encountered.I've read other SEM books and took a class on it and still felt a bit unsure about a lot of it, but after reading this book, I feel way more comfortable with SEM.The only thing that was not great was the explanation of graph theory.The resourcesbon the website are good too! Lots of scripts for different statistical packages (including R!)
