The Essentials of Computer Organization And Architecture

Informative
I personally liked this text.It is not perfect, and some sections should be more elaborated, but otherwise it is rather informative.Covers boolean algebra, logic gates, memory organization, and many other good things. It can't be read quickly. You will have to spend time to read carefully.Positive: for the most part questions for each chapter can be answered based on information in the book. In my life I have encountered text where there were NO way questions could be answered based solely on the info in the text. So, if you getting this text for class, it is good news.Negative: I feel that some sections could be elaborated more with further examples. For instance binary divisions and multiplications would be better with couple more examples.I feel like I didn't waste time reading it, so you too could learn something from it (unless of course you already know the subject well...).

Good Book
Another book I needed for school... Another good book worth keeping for any computer enthusiast; well written, covers many important basic concepts in computer architecture and design; received it quickly in very good condition... still have it. Very happy.

Required textbook, but pretty decent
I was required to purchase this textbook for a class, but it is still pretty good. The explanations are pretty clear and they do them a few times in a few different ways to help really get the feel for them. Engineering books like this can be fairly boring, but this one mixes in some real world examples and case studies which helps. The exercises are pretty good, but I wished the answers for at least some of them were offered.

Only if you have to for coursework
Poorly organized and terribly conveyed fundamentals. Rarely have a found a textbook of this nature so widely used yet so poorly authored.

The must have book for anyone considering how computer software/hardware intermingle or anyone partaking computer science
Have only just started reading this book but from what I have read so far this book is beyond amazing. The authors have done a very good job, this book is elegant and sophisticated and puts everything together in a very direct way. At first I flipped through the book to get a slight overview of later chapters and I saw there was some advanced math and possibly calculus especially in the encryption chapter so I must say you need to have some previous knowledge in math and maybe a little in others subjects to understand this book. If you want to know how computer hardware works with computer software than this book is for you.

Poor Textbook
Having used this as a textbook for a distance-learning class, I've found it to be very poorly written. Its greatest fault is that in calculations and procedures, many of the examples provided have incomplete explanations, leaving out crucial steps. This leaves the student staring at the example, trying to figure out how it was done. An in-person instructor can compensate for this by showing examples on the blackboard, but distance-learning students need to find alternate sources to fill in the gaps. The exercises in the book are also poor. For example, sometimes a factual question is asked, for which the information is not present in the book. Or a problem is given where prerequisite examples or explanations are absent. As a high-level overview of computer architecture, the book is alright but when it gets into details, it leaves students floundering.
