Q: Do you have to turn it off when finished? If so, how?

You don't have to turn it off but you can to save battery life. To turn it off turn it over, there is an on/off switch on the bottom of the mouse,

Q: How long is the mouse? Would like to use it for a laptop an don't want a full-sized mouse. I have another one that's only 4" from front to back.

It's approx. 3 7/8" long by 2 1/4" (approximate because it is an irregular shape, and should be no more than a 1/16" off) Should do the trick for you. I use it for my laptop and love it! I hope this helps :)

There is a slide-off panel on the bottom of the mouse. Remove it and replace the AA battery inside.
