The included power supply supports drives with higher usage requirements. If the drive is still good you may be able to recover data on a hard drive that removed from the laptop

If the drive will power up, physically will mount as a drive on the OS then it should; depends on what you mean by "took a dump". I had a drive that mechanically died on me and the only way to recover all my data on there was to use a data recovery service. It was pricey but in my case a necessity. I bought this particular device because I have lots of older drives that have pictures and other files on them I want to extract before I dispose of the drives. I have IDE drives, laptop drives and desktop drives I wanted to extract data from so this is perfect for that purpose. Better to have backup of your most important data and you spend that pricey cost like I incurred for procrastinating.

Q: Can this pull data from an old hard drive to your phone?

Yes you can take everything from an old computer. What I did is revoved the hard drive, Connect the device and transfered what I wanted to a computer. From there to a phone.
