I can't seem to get the usb to work, i'm using a usb key, it doesn't seem to recognise any mp3 on the key.

Hello Phil Sterling. 1 place the USB in the slot 2 press power button (top left) 3 repeatedly press 'fun/eq' button (bottom left) until 'USB' comes up on the display screen. 4 wait and it works for me

Can you switch it off completely to save battery life?

Hi , in answer to your question as far as I understand regarding ordinary batteries , that when a battery is inserted and the unit switched on , a reaction starts within the battery , which will slowly discharge the battery over a period of time, even if then switched off. A process within the battery (most batteries are the same) starts. Of course if switched on and left on will discharge quicker. Because the unit can be run on the mains electric, I keep a set of batteries near to the unit and if we get a power failure then insert the new batteries.
