![Captain Marleau, Vol. 3 [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71qDZtc34OL.jpg)

IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLESCaptain Marleau (Corinne Masiero) has a hunter's instinct, disguised under a deliberately offbeat veneer. As she says herself, she doesn't skim over cases, she plunges into them. Always on the prowl, she lies in wait for clues and her prey and takes them by surprise. In each episode, her hunt centers around a character played by a famous actor - men and women who are a match for the outstanding cop. Captain Marleau is the brainchild of French writer Elsa Marpeau, who describes her as a cross between Frances McDormand's Marge Gunderson (Fargo); Raymond Chandler's literary creation, Philip Marlowe; and Peter Falk's TV cop, Columbo. The series is directed by another female French treasure, Josée Dayan (The Count of Monte Cristo, Rasputin). This team of women have created a policewoman who wears a parka and a Holden Caulfield hunting cap, dances and sings spontaneously, doesn't care what others think of her, and sees through lies with laser clarity. Her breezy manner and little red braids suggest Pippi Longstocking and belie the fact that she's the smartest person in the room. French audiences swooned over Captain Marleau, just like coroner Léopold Salaun (Jean-Claude Drouot) - because she's a refreshing blast of crime-solving brilliance. The deliberately offbeat cop is back to dive into more cases in Volume 3, which contains episodes 13-18 of the French series: The Black Reeds (Nicole Garcia, 2018, 94 min), Never to Die Again (Isabelle Adjani, 2019, 91 min), A Voice in the Night (Jeanne Balibar, 2019, 94 min), Roller Coaster (Marina Hands, 2019, 92 min), Lover Gone Bad (Kad Merad, 2019, 89 min), and Peace and Health (Mélanie Doutey, 92 min, 2020).

Fun too watch even with subtitles
What a hoot to watch. Excentric detective solves crimes in France in Columbia style. The action and humor make you forget the subtitles soon after starting each episode. Thank to Mhz streaming service the series is available in the U.S.

some are really good and some are not so good
This is the 3rd DVD of this series that we have watched and out of the first three this was the most uneven. Some of the episodes were quite entertaining and compelling. Others were frankly atrocious. The main factors in that were the storylines, some were beyond ridiculous and also the obnoxiousness of the captain Marleau character. She can be incredibly annoying to other characters in the stories and therefore very annoying to the viewer. She's eccentric, weird, obtuse, pathetic, and her humor is so obscure at times that we were perplexed. What a strange character. But she's a fantastic, relentless homicide investigator. She likes wearing her ridiculous headgear. I like her but a little bit goes a long way. Not sure if we'll watch any more of these.

Captain Marleau is refreshing
These are great subtitles. Nothing is lost while you listen and read. I love that Captain Marleau is comfortable in her skin and smart. What a great combination!

Captain Marleau continues to astound ... and confound the murderers!
Quirky humor abounds in this latest set of unique French mysteries. English subtitles make these easier to understand - but my French is improving in the process.
