Only Biology Course Text I ever read cover to cover
While Pechenik may have his faults - his prose is not one of them. There are times when his jokes are a little silly, but he's fresh and interesting. This is a great book of the invertebrate phyla and was excellent for my intro to invertebrate zoo some years ago.I later moved into Entomology, but only because the entomologists were so charismatic! Not to say that the Malacologist teaching this course wasn't - he just didnt have any money for me!I've given my original third edition away - and will be replacing it with a 5th shortly. It's just a nice reference to keep, along with Brusca and Brusca.

Good, but could use better images
The text for this book is very clear and easy to understand. That said, the images and illustrations could definitely use an up grade. I was very surprised when I opened the text book and realized that it was all printed in black and white with light blue accents. I have never had a biology text that was not full color before, and now I really appreciate that. The lack of full color makes some of the diagrams harder to understand then should be necessary, but other than that, it's a great little book.

Biology of the Invertebrates
This book made invert zoo boring and lifeless. It hardly did justice to the commonly overlooked invertebrates. The book is entirely in black and white (including photos) which is a shame considering the price of it. Although the book was thorough, I felt the author skipped around. Important terms would only be briefly mentioned and then the author may or may not discuss them in further pages/chapters. I do feel that the author attempted to gear the book towards bio students who had to take an invert zoo class rather than solely to students majoring in invert. Overall a good book but I used wikipedia more than the book because it was lacking. I wouldn't recommend purchasing the book unless necesary for a class.

Invertebrates Review
Biology of the Invertebrates, Fifth Edition by Jan Pechenik, Jan Pechenik is a great book for anyone taking Invert. at the basic level, it describes different phylums, subphylums, classes, genus, and species! I took it and payed way too much for it from my school, sold it for 1/2 the price back and then bought it on amazon for like 14 dollars! I keep it and still reference to it now that I'm taking vertebrate!

Its required for school. I expected to see some colorful pages. Not. A lot of diagrams. The font type of the text is very conservative. I would of preferred a much more visual and text friendly book.

Absolute Must
An absolute must for anyone studying invertebrate biology/zoology. I bought this book for one module that I am studying (Biology of the Invertebrates, how did you guess?), and it is an absolute life-saver.Excellent illustrations and clear concise writing, very detailed and yet very accessible. However, the only thing to beware - is the taxonomic groups are changing all the time, so if using it for revision, make sure you use the classes/phylum that are provided to you by the lecturer/teacher, as the older versions of this book may have different classifications than is current.Other than that, perfect for my studies.

Great.
Love this book it was very useful for my course even though it is an old text book. Would consider buying old versions again.
