Q: How is this for people that have not read the books? I have but my roommates have not.

I haven't read the books yet and love to play the game. We've used this as a start to player characters in Dungeons and Dragons. Build your PC off what you ended up with in the game. We weren't even aware there were books until much later.

Q: Can i combine this with the core game, or do i have to remove cards like the name of the wind expansion?

We combine with the core game, just so we have more boards and can have more than 4 people playing. If you have people who don't know the books, then it might lead to confusion, but I think the base game and this game work well together.

you can play this on its own. the mechanics are a little different than the base game.

No. It’s based on the Stormlight Archive series. Although, there is also a board game based on the Mistborn series (super fun too)
