Finalist for the 2015 AAAS / Subaru SB&F Excellence in Science Book exemplify outstanding and engaging science writing and illustration for young readers A children’s instructional book on how to use readily available materials to turn the house into a science lab Physics teacher Bobby Mercer provides readers with more than 50 great hands-on experiments that can be performed for just pennies, or less. Turn a plastic cup into a pinhole camera using waxed paper, a rubber band, and a thumbtack. Build a swinging wave machine using a series of washers suspended on strings from a yardstick. Or construct your own planetarium from an empty potato chip canister, construction paper, scissors, and a pin. Each project has a materials list, detailed step-by-step instructions with illustrations, and a brief explanation of the scientific principle being demonstrated. Junk Drawer Physics also includes sidebars of fascinating physics facts, such as did you know the Eiffel Tower is six inches taller in summer than in winter because its steel structure expands in the heat? Educators and parents will find this title a handy resource to teach children about physics topics that include magnetism, electricity, force, motion, light, energy, sound, and more, and have fun at the same time. Review: Love this series - We have most of the books from this series and we love them all!! I’ve been homeschooling for 3 years now and we much prefer these books to boring science curriculum. Plus, we always learn more than the activities intend. That’s how you know it’s good!! Review: Entertaining for teens who enjoy problem solving - Purchased as gift for 13 yr old nephew who is in advanced math and enjoys problem solving. Said book was cool and started doing experiments as soon as he got the book. Believe this gift is a winner!

Great Resource
I bought this to take with me when visiting my grand kids. They liked it so much I left it with them. Use this as inspiration for new ideas as much as for following what they did. It's a great experience for kids to design new projects - especially if you don't have exactly the same junk in your drawer.

Saved me!
Crazy me I took on teaching physics to 12 year olds in my homeschool coop. While I am fascinated by the subject, I really have no formal background to draw on. This book helped save my butt! ( this and YouTube :) Experiments are the way to go with kids and this is great book for easy and inexpensive. It delivers on what it says.

Love it! Easy to follow and great to do ...
Love it! Easy to follow and great to do with the kids. This guy knows his physics and follows Einstein's idea that if you can't explain it simply you don't really know it! Even I can explain to my kids how these physics concepts work now!

Photos are not color. All black n white.
Seems like a good idea book. But I really wish the pictures were in color. I bought this for my 11 years old grandson. I have a feeling he's gonna loose interest because the photos are black and white.

Junk Drawer Physics: 50 Awesome Experiments That Don't Cost a Thing (Junk Drawer Science)
Great book! Awesome Book!! Thank Amazon for having this book. The authors mention that you don't need much money nor a high-tech lab equipment to perform awesome experiments, for example a Kaleidofoilscope!!

Excellent resource for teachers
As a teacher I am always looking for ways to make lessons more enjoyable this book give lots of great ideas to incorporate into lessons and the kids seem to love it. By using experiments it keeps the pupils engaged and I feel they are learning better as a result. The experiments are also mostly cheap and won't break your bank. Packing was good and arrived in perfect condition. Please hit the helpful button if you found this helpful, helps me make better reviews.
