A group of scientists has cloned Lt. Ellen Ripley, along with the alien queen inside her, hoping to breed the ultimate weapon. But the resurrected Ripley is full of surprises for her "creators," as are the aliens they've imprisoned. And soon, a lot more than "all hell" breaks loose. To combat the creatures, Ripley must team up with a band of smugglers, including a mechanic named Call (Ryder), who holds more than a few surprises of her own.

Great Movie.
Great movie.

Awesome movie, but not everyone would agree.
This is one of my favorite scifi movies. I LOVE the chemistry and relationship between Call and Ripley. This movie had so many gooey and gross deaths, but the final death was probably the most insane looking death I've ever seen in a movie.A lot of people don't like this movie, so my opinion is unpopular, but I don't care, I love this movie. I never get tired of watching it.

Interesting, enjoyable, but not as great as 1 & 2
For a franchise, the Alien movies are... a mixed bag. Everyone has opinions on the idea, let alone execution, of sequels to great (or any) movies. Some are great and most are not, and in the end one wonders... what will they add onto in the future? (Look around: A LOT!). In the case of the Aliens line up, this Alien Resurrection have my wife and I a bit of enjoyment on a Saturday afternoon, and the promise that we would return at least once. But no, it's not as great as 1 and 2.I will never begrudge the efforts and talents of filmmakers (screenwriters, actors, directors, etc) for not merely their talents, but the sheer will that goes into bringing something to life. But when films and their makers (producers and studios) keep revisiting the same set up, it comes at great risk. There are others past 2 that we have tried and failed to enjoy or like. That's our taste - or the 'fact' that capturing light in a bottle more than once is at best hard. In this case, Alien Resurrection is at least a stand up with some redeeming value and enjoyment along the way.So all of the said, a few spoilers...It's been two hundred years since Ripley died at the end of Alien 3 (not a fan) and (movie) scientists have cloned our heroine for their evil purposes. It took us seconds to wonder, why didn't they clone the cat? This Ripley turns out to be a "hybrid" of human-alien - because of course you'd do that - and the 8th of the line up of tries. The first 7? You'll have to watch and see. As a group of mercenaries lands on the ship where of course they are also doing stupid things like trying to breed the aliens, they are dropping off some captured humans - who will, what? Yep, become hosts for the new breed being developed.Aliens come along, people die, Ripley is called upon to either save the day or die, and we find out that "family" sometimes has to kill it's members to stop things like Aliens getting to earth. It's crazy and sci fi and we again have the super brave woman doing the smart things while men all around go for greed and the feeling of power and an overwhelming need to be stupid... but it's all good fun and Ripley again makes the tough calls to get some of them home...In the end we did enjoy it. There is a lot going on and to unpack, but it is fun and there is tension and excitement and a robot, but no cat. Hope aboard and take another ride into space and see what happens...

This? Was one of the best, Because Ripley had died in the earlier videos. So now you're looking at a clone of a clone and she sells her other clothes... Sad and scary...

Alien: Resurrection
"It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong they could possibly do. That's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking. Because everything they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from it. And people assume that if I hated it then they'd changed the script...but it wasn't so much they changed it, they executed it in such a ghastly fashion they rendered it unwatchable." - Joss Whedon on Alien: ResurrectionThis was Whedon's response to accusations that Jean Pierre-Jeunet deviated from the screenplay he had written. These accusations were brought forth by the fact that Whedon expressed his displeasure in the film. In reality he was upset with the fact that he had written the screenplay with a tongue in cheek tone, but in the end the director opted to play the film straight. The result became part of the inspiration for my favorite show from Whedon: Firefly. Needless to say that has gained more acclaim and a greater fan following than Alien: Resurrection.Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), having died at the end of Alien3, has been cloned by the corporation 200 years after her death. She's become a blend of alien and human, the soldier that they have been looking for. In turn they have also created new aliens, but when they escape from their holding pin it is up to the alien hybrid Ripley to help a mercenary crew escape from the Auriga ship they are being held captive on.Honestly, I don't get all the hate for Alien: Resurrection. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a great movie but I did enjoy it more than Alien3 and people seem to enjoy that movie much more than this. That's something I've never been quite able to grasp. For me, anytime Ron Perlman is involved in a flick I stand up and take notice, and he does a great job at adding levity to the proceedings here. Sigourney Weaver also seems to be having more fun than she has the entire series as well. She's able to play around with the character she created in the first Alien and evolve, since she's a hybrid, into a somewhat ambiguous character. While Jean Pierre-Jeunet did not completely keep to Whedon's script he still seems to be having fun with the movie. For a guy who codirected flicks like Amelie and Delicatessen, he keeps something of that French tongue in cheek spirit. I think that we as Americans sometimes can't exactly see that for what it is. At the same time though, do we really want that from our Alien movies? Alien and Aliens were brilliant pieces of work that didn't rely on levity in their proceedings, but Alien3 was so dark that it might have required such levity. Either way I think this is still the last decent flick in the series.Looking back on the series I think Alien3 is the weakest link, unfortunately I seem to be in the minority. Alien3 had the benefit of being directed largely by future Oscar nominee David Fincher; whereas Alien: Resurrection was directed by Jean Pierre-Jeunet, who had not directed a flick alone or in English prior to this film (he required a translator on site in order to communicate with the cast). Jeunet regular Dominique Pinon, Perlman, Weaver, and Alien newbie Winona Ryder among a largely entertaining cast help make this film a lot more fun than people like to admit. I recommend this over Alien3, but then again I would recommend all of the Alien flicks to first time watchers. Even at its worst, it's better than most Science Fiction series.3.5/5Be sure to check out: Armadillo & Sands: Intellectual Properties at Work!
