Great little gadget
Overall, I love this product and I recommend it. However there are some caveats and the operation is not perfect. I installed the Level Bolt on a guest room that I intend to rent out to strangers, and it is perfect for this purpose. I love being able to send access codes to people's phones and then deny them access once they leave. This is so much safer and more reliable than using a lock box. And honestly, the product sells itself. The guests love it and they're shocked it just works like magic! So my first caveat is that the door, along with the locks, must be standard doors. They have a "compatibility check" which gives you standard measurements so you may assess your own door prior to purchase. My front door, which was built over a hundred years ago, would not be a candidate for Level locks. This was plainly evident as I was installing the Bolt to my guestroom door. Installing the actual lock is quite simple, however making sure the bolt slid effortlessly into the hole was more tedious. I had to enlarge the hole with a knife and drill. The strike plate has beveled edges to help guide the lock into position. Which brings me to my second caveat. While the motor in the Level Bolt is strong enough to lock, it does not get into the fully locked position unless I press the door closed. Thankfully, even with the error, the lock is extended enough so that you cannot open the door. Applying a little pressure while I use Level Bolt will lock it into place fully. This might be just some imperfection with my door or maybe I have some more whittling to do. They also have this calibrate function to customize the lock to the door, but it didn't do much better after calibration. Lastly, I use an Android phone, so Level Lock will only work while I am within bluetooth range. This hasn't been a problem for me yet. IOS phones have HomeKit integration, which allows for remote and other uses. I'm hoping Android will come out with something like that as well.

Matter Update makes a huge difference
The Level Bolt was the perfect solution make my front door smart while maintaining the look my wife desired. Watching the deadbolt open and close by itself looks like magic. The device is well made and everything feels high quality. Installation went smoothly with only a minor adjustment to our original deadbolt casing to allow the Bolt to smoothly operate. We use it primarily with Apple HomeKit and all family members have access to it. I do wish they offered face plates and strike plates to match other hardware colors, but it's a small thing. Before the recent Matter update, it wasn't dependable enough to count on- the response took a few seconds when it did work, and would sometimes not respond or lose connection. I purchased the Level Connect wifi bridge hoping this would help, but it didn't make a difference for me. Enter the recent Matter update! Despite owning a Level Bolt for over a year and a half now, Level added a Matter support option to the Bolt and offered an OTA update to all previous owners. You have to submit a questionnaire to make sure your home is compatible with Matter over Thread, and after review, they send you an email with a new Pairing Code and the firmware update will appear in your phone's Level app. It walks you through the process, but essentially you remove the Bolt and add it back using Matter. The Bolt with Matter now responds instantly. No more three second delays! It's been about 10 days, and so far, not a single lost connection or "no response" message. The update option was a wonderful surprise and has made my Bolt just as quick and dependable as the rest of my HomeKit devices.

they find excuses not to replace your malfunctioning lock under warranty
I reached out about a malfunctioning level bolt that was still within the warranty period. I spent several days working with customer care to troubleshoot. 1st level help desk was actually very knowledgable and helpful. They soon discovered that the bolt was malfunctioning, and asked me for my receipt for the original purchase. I provided my amazon invoice, and spoke with a 2nd level service team, who confirmed that the hardware was malfunctioning, and this is where the hedging started. Level initially stated that although the level was bought on amazon, an authorized reseller, they could not honor the warranty replacement as the invoice "listed Amazon, other" as the seller. They offered me a $20 replacement discount, which is ridiculous considering a new lock costs $199 on their website. When I complained, they transferred me to their customer service manager Lisa, who was the worst. She made the efforts to APPEAR helpful, whilst doing her best to deny, block, defend. Lisa increased the discount to $50, but again refused to honor the replacement, now stating that the lock was manufactured in 2021, even though the invoice clearly showed the purchase date in 2024. When I then asked to spend the $50 discount on a level keypad instead of(being sold for $79), she reverted the discount to $20, stating the $50 was only intended for the $199 lock. Which they were supposed to replace for free per the original warranty, and given the malfunction. A huge WASTE OF TIME! Bolt worked very well for a year, then started to have problems. the internal wiring malfunctioned to where the bolt would only travel half the distance, then lose power, leaving the door locked, requiring a manual key unlock. Buy with caution. A great idea, and worked well for a year. But don't expect any fair treatment once the bolt fails. and definitely don't expect ay help from Lisa, service manager. STAY AWAY!!!

Low profile smart lock
OK, so I've had these Level deadbolt locks for 2 months now. I actually bought them opened box cuz I wasn't so sure they would work for my application. So far it's been good. I've never owned a smart lock so I don't have something to compare it to. I didn't like how big the rest of the smart locks look so I didn't want to even try them. Ok so here's the breakdown 1. I have a ring alarm system and a ring doorbell that does work with sidewalk. So I need it something to work with that on one app. I also use Samsung phones not apple so I need it to work with that too. So far, everything works. Setting it up to my phone was a challenge! One thing, if you get an open box Level, make sure you do a hard reset on the Level and make sure you have a new battery. It's very important cuz I waisted a lot of time trying to connect the unit but couldn't cuz it was still connected to the last person. Anyways, even after that, it took a while to connect to the Level app. Like 10 times or more each deadbolt! I was literally next to the door too.. Yeah have patience. The installation: The installation was easy and challenging at the same time. I have attached pictures to better explain. I was changing my old locks and bought a set for my regular door and a set for my security metal door. The set I got for my regular door didn't work with the Level deadbolt system. See pictures with the 2 spindles. Another deadbolt didn't work because the spindle was too thick. See the other picture.. Another problem I encountered, the lock on my screen door wouldn't lock unless you pull the door in a little il, this doesn't work with this smart lock or any. I don't think. If you don't have tools and are not comfortable working on thing this could be and issue. My regular door says easy.. I did have to make the hole on the door frame bigger so the cylinder could go in without getting jammed. No big deal. How it works : The Level deadbolt work good with my ring app, ones you set it up and connect it on the Alex app you can enable it on the ring app. That was easy. Charing with level app with my wife was also annoying, eventually it worked! She also has the ring app so she has access from there.. She doesn't really need the Level app. If you want to know who is opening the door they would need their own profile on the Level app. One thing I found out, when the deadbolt loses connection all I do is reset my ring doorbell and it reconnects, 100% of the time this works, it might take a couple of minutes but it works. Again, I have them connected to my doorbell not on Bluetooth. So far, I'm happy with this, they work I would say 90 to 95 percent of the time, if it disconnects just reset whatever doorbell or camera that it's connected too. Oh, I have kwikset deadbolt with the smarkey feature. I've tried to give you answers to questions I had so I hope I helped you.. This does work with the ring app with the a camera/doorbell that supports Amazon sidewalk, It works with Samsung phones, it works on metal security doors, with some modifications and it works 90 to 95% of the time.. Just reset camera, not the Level deadbolt.. If you have what I have I recommend this item..

Bolt, now with updated Matter firmware, works flawlessly with my Apple Home.
I've had the Bolt since 2021 and have little to add to the compliments (and quibbles) noted by so many others. The main selling point for me was its aesthetic – it's hidden within the door; and that, along with Apple Home compatibility, overrode any other issues. An inherent problem with smart door locks is the necessity that your bolt and strike plate align near-perfectly, since you will not be manually pushing, pulling, or forcing them into alignment, as you might be accustomed to doing almost unconsciously, especially in an older home where wear and settling have caused minor misalignment. I suspect this is the most common cause of dissatisfaction with smart lock function. I solved this in my 75 year-old-home by gluing a felt strip cushion to stop the door about 1/8" before closing against the door jamb (see photo). My only minor issue with the Bolt was that, as others have noted, it took a few seconds for it to lock with its reassuring beep after activated in the Home app or with Siri. But with a Home Pod Mini ten feet away and an Apple TV in the next room, the lock never actually failed to work properly when triggered either locally or remotely. The recent offer (via email) from Level to update the firmware on my lock to include Matter/Thread functionality has produced a remarkable improvement. While I expected this would make the Bolt more responsive, it has exceeded expectations! Not only does the lock now respond immediately to local and remote commands, surprisingly my entire smart home environment reacts quicker. I suspect that with the Apple devices mentioned above, as well as a few other thread enabled devices (two Eve Energy smart plugs and an eero router), the addition of the Bolt firmware has rendered the whole network more responsive. Kudos to Level for giving some free love to an over-4-year-old product. It now works flawlessly.

Unique lock, they need to focus more on how I use it
This is a review of the Level Bolt written on 07 Mar 2024. I installed the lock in late July 2023 in a door manufactured in the 1920s. I also have the Level Keypad installed outside on the house next to the door. Pluses: Works with existing double-cylinder deadbolt. This is unique as far as I know. Existing lock works as it always has, regardless of usage of smartlock features Existing lock will still work if the company goes belly-up or there is an EMP I have not yet replaced the battery that was included with the lock Works consistently with separate Level keypad Works with Alexa (This is apparently not supported by Level, but it works as of this writing) Works with Sidewalk (This is apparently not supported by Level) Minuses: The battery is inside the bolt itself. So this is not exactly an ANSI Grade 1 design. The smaller jamb strike plate cost extra Tolerances are limited, so expect to do some custom fitting in an old beat up door. Deadbolts are usually more or less cylindrical but with two flat sides, the flatness increasing clearance if the door is not lined up perfectly with the jamb. However the Level Bolt deadbolt is perfectly cylindrical. A clever design but the drawback is, if it is even slightly out of alignment with the strike plate on the jamb, it will not lock or unlock properly. I had a lot of hassles with the keypad when the keypad battery got low during cold weather. I did NOT receive a low battery alert, and the app in fact said the battery was OK. I tried multiple sets of alkaline batteries and it was not happy; as the temp dropped below 20F daily in January, the keypad would not work later at night or early mornings before it warmed up. I switched to non-rechargeable lithium batteries and the problems vanished. I had started a support case for that and they had me do the usual useless intrusive things to no avail. This seems like that "designed in California" biz. Did they even bother testing this in the freezer for a few months to simulate a midwestern winter? When used with Alexa, I can lock and unlock reliably For about a month (January 2024) there was no status feedback ("Lock is unlocked" "Lock is locked") from lock to Alexa/Echo. This did work at installation but stopped working after December 2023. I started a support case, found out Alexa-Sidewalk was not officially supported with the hardware I had (Echo Input), and left it at that. About a week later, it started working again as it had in 2023. So whatever. Occasionally I will come home expecting the door is locked. So, I use the code to unlock it. Unfortunately, if the door was already unlocked, the code locks it. This is not a problem when I say "Alexa, unlock door": She will ask for the code, but if the door is already unlocked, she does not lock it. Seems they are tracking the state of the lock, as expected, not just toggling regardless of initial state. So, seems it would be low-hanging fruit to allow one code for locking and another code for unlocking. Comments on the app: Level seems to be highly focused on the form and design of the app. It is pretty, but in spite of that, they missed the boat on what the app should be helping with; the app should be pushing when batteries are low. It does not. In fact, given the keypad and Alexa / Sidewalk functionality, the app works well for setup, and is a nice backup, but it would never be the primary means of locking and unlocking at our house. I almost always have stuff in my hands when I get home, and pulling out my phone would be a hassle. It is an administrative aid that I use occasionally. So the one thing that that app would be useful for day-to-day, it was not designed to do. That says a lot to me about where their design focus is not. Suggestions: More rigorous cold weather testing for keypad Add low battery push notifications to app More sophisticated power management that can sense when battery performance drops out of acceptable range when temperatures drop Support for functionality with Alexa, other home automation Change the battery and bolt design so it jams less often if the door is not lined up perfectly Add the option to have codes that work only for locking and only for unlocking

So close
The hardware seems to work well and the battery life has been good so far (bit over a month). The initial setup and update to matter was frustrating. On a hunch I turned off auto reconnect to my home wifi. The update was pretty easy for the units that were not defective. I had to return a couple which is hopefully attributed to the fact that Amazon is very inconsistent about QC for "renewed" products. Once the firmware was updated, I had no issue setting things up in Google home with the original Google Nest Hub as the controller. I have my thread network set up through the eero 6 pro. I have a couple of Alexa controllers as well so I went ahead and shared control across ecosystems (I'm digging matter so far). This is where it fell apart. Works great in Alexa now, but only 1 works in GHome. I have other Matter over thread devices that have no issues. This is Level specific. Based on all this info (and much more) their tier 2 product support specialist told me I didn't have the right hardware. I still needed a Google thread border router. I know that I'm not always right so I gave it a shot. That was wrong and a waste of money. I'm hoping to get more help now that I'm past the return dates. If they can fix this, I'd bump these to 4 stars. TL;DR The lock is awesome as long as you only use 1 ecosystem and don't need support and can install it yourself and don't mind waiting for a fix

Modifications
I have been watching the evolution of remotely operated deadbolts for a year. I chose Level Lock primarily because of its aesthetics. I just don’t like those blobs hanging on the inside/outside of the door. Biggest drawback is the price. They are a little more expensive than the blobs. Easy to install, but be aware of a couple of things. Use their website to verify that the lock will work with your existing deadbolt. We have an older deadbolt by Titan, and Level said Level Lock will not work with it. I bought from Amazon anyhow, with a return in mind. It fit and worked beautifully, for the most part. First problem, the new bolt assembly is slightly larger than the opening in the door for the original bolt. A bit of pressure and I was able to push it in, fit is tight. Next problem, we have a larger dead bolt strike plate with 3 inch screws into a wall stud. I wanted to keep this instead of replacing it with their smaller, length wise, strike plate. The opening in my stake plate would not accommodate the new slightly larger Level bolt. I used a quarter round file on my strike plate to enlarged the opening for the new bolt. Again, worked well. Everything lined up perfectly. It needs to, as there cannot be any resistance when the bolt is going into place. If there is, you will get an error on your app that the bolt cannot slide into place. Installation time, about 40 minutes because I need to file my strike plate. If you use their strike plate, and everything lines up, easy 15 min install. At this point, I tested the lock with their app. Smooth, smooth with a little musical note to let me know it had obeyed my commend. Now the real issue for me, range, I wanted more, much more. The Level Lock communicates via Bluetooth, which has a limited range, perhaps 12-15 feet on my door. The blobs use wifi to communicate and have a much greater range. The solution, AppleTV, it will communicate with Level Lock via Bluetooth, and it communicates with the internet with wifi. Sooooo, my smart phone (iPhone) reaches back to AppleTV via wifi, and AppleTV communicates with Level Lock via Bluetooth. Simple, oh no you say, but yes as all of this happens automatically. There is a touch more, as my AppleTV is in another room with a large appliance between it and Level Lock, so no Bluetooth signal to the lock. I purchased a second AppleTV and put it in the same room as the Level Lock. An expensive solution, but I had planned on the second AppleTV purchase for our den anyhow. This last part was done so I could say, “Hey SIRI, lock/unlock the door” from anywhere in the world, and it will. If you use the Level Lock app, and don’t mind the 12-15 foot range, you can totally ignore the AppleTV part. There have been a couple of glitches. This morning SIRI told me the door was locked and it was not. I didn't hear the musical note, so I tried opening it, it opened. Told SIRI again and it did lock. I now have a little trust issue.

Doesn’t work well with metal gate
Lock stopped working after a couple weeks. When I reached out to customer service they say it’s because it’s installed on a metal gate and it doesn’t work well with other metal!

Level Bolt Smart Lock - Discreet/ Reliable/ Secure
The Level Bolt has been a great purchase for our home. The technology is superior and using the Level Bolt allowed us to integrate with a Dead Bolt of our choice. In comparison to all the other smart locks we investigated this was visually the best design. It’s simple to use and we easily integrated into Apple Home. Level even future proofed the Level Bolt and I was easily able to upgrade them over wifi so they are now Matter-over-thread compliant which has made them even more responsive/ fast/ reliable. We now have hands free access to our property and can provide access to anyone from wherever in the world we find ourselves. I definitely would not hesitate in recommending this product and regularly recommend to friends. We actually bought 2 and had them installed during construction of our new home. This was great as we could see when trades were coming and going and remotely provide access to the interior if we weren’t home. I wouldn’t
