The Laws Sketchbook for Nature Journaling

I looked at so many sketch journals and was relieved to finally find the perfect one. The paper is the ideal weight for graphite or watercolor. You can decide on a whim to add watercolor and not worry about bleed through. The tooth of the paper is very nice. No issues with repeated erasing. No smudging. It’s obvious that John Muir Laws meticulously thought out every little detail of this sketchbook. I particularly love the helpful pages in the back that have tips for drawing in the field. I didn’t think I would use them much, but have referenced them over and over again. Another important plus is the size. This book is the perfect size to grab and go while still allowing for plenty of space to draw.

John Muir Laws has a way of blending his artistic skills with the scientific process. His work is always high-quality, and this book would be useful to anyone delving into the natural world. I am a science teacher, and I am always recommending his book and videos. He teaches us how to observe, question, and draw!

good heavy stock for sketching...don't forget colored pencils and an eraser or even use a pencil as home. The self help sketching tips are all at the back of the book which was difficult for me to access and learn at the same time

JML is a fantastic artist and generous with his skills as a teacher. This little field book gives you some tips on how to render pics on the go if you are a novice. There is a section of toned paper in the back if you want to try different tools such as charcoal or pastels.

I must confess that I am very partial to all of John Law Muir's books. The quality of content is always fabulous. As for this book, first realize that it is mostly blank paper for you to fill up with art studies and not necessisarily a 'how to' course. However, that being said, this canvass cloth bound sketchbook does have both off-white paper and warm tint paper, but at the back it also has a condensed overview on everything about nature sketching you'll ever need. I've never seen this done before and his set of included instructions only makes this purchase all that more unique and valuable.

I am a professional artist and have used many different brands of sketchbooks over the years. I bought this because I am taking the Wild Wonders Nature Journaling workshops with John Muir Laws. Cons- the book came a little warped, they must have stored them standing up, which is a no no. It doesn’t lay completely flat for full page spreads. The paper is just ok, it will take very light watercolor, definitely not a heavy wash. The pros are there is a wealth of information at the end of the book about sketching nature.

The size and paper weight of this journal is perfect for popping into your backpack while still leaving plenty of room for detailed nature journaling. The paper weight is heavy enough to take watercolor and markers without bleed through but still work with colored pencil as well. The quick reference guide in the back is perfect for both new and seasoned journalers needing ideas and inspiration for their pages. This can be used independently but I would highly recommend pairing with John Muir Laws book “The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling”

I come from a family of nature lovers so I bought one for everyone for Christmas. The sketchbooks are great quality and the drawing tips and instructions are excellent. Highly recommend.

Ich mache nun schon länger nature journaling. Dafür verwende ich verschiedene Blöcke und manchmal auch einfach lose Blätter Papier. Dadurch habe ich die Erfahrung gemacht, dass die Qualität des Papiers doch echt großen Einfluss auf das Ergebnis der Zeichnung hat bzw wie ich einen Block nutzen kann. In diesem Sketchbuch kannst du tatsächlich immer auf beiden Seiten gleich gut zeichnen und aquarellieren. Echtes Aquarellpapier kann oft nur auf einer Seite genutzt werden. Allerdings fängt es sich bei umfangreichen Nass- in- nass- Zeichnungen doch zu wölben an. Aber dafür ist es auch nicht gemacht, sondern um schnell eine kleine Zeichnung unterwegs zu machen. Außerdem sind die Techniken und Tricks am Ende des Buches im Alltag sehr hilfreich, wenn man gerade etwas Schwierigkeiten hat, z. B. einen Vogel verhältnismäßig gut zu zeichnen.

Lovely size to use for outdoor. Using for rough sketches of garden musings Paper is thinner so one needs to adjust style. Lovely gift for any aspiring artist. Sturdy cover. I have JMLs book too, which is worth having to learn how to nature journal and enjoy the world outdoors.

Useful lay flat pages including additional information about nature journaling at the back of the sketchbook. Would recommend.

Ich hatte mich lange ein bisschen dagegen gesträubt mir extra "DAS Nature Journaling Journal" zu kaufen, da es ja auch viele andere gute Skizzenbücher auf dem deutschen Markt gibt und ich den "Spickzettel" hinten drinnen nicht mehr brauche. Aus Recherchegründen für meine Nature Journaling Kurse (und ja, auch weil ich's doch endlich mal haben wollte ;) ) habe ich es mir doch dann zugelegt. Und ich bin BEGEISTERT! Es ist kein seeehr dickes Aquarellpapier, aber selbst ein paar Schichten Lasuren hält das Papier toll aus! Meine Bleistifte malen endlich wie sie sollen und ich fühl mich einfach wohl auf dem Papier. Auch wenn Slizzenbücher/ und -Papiervorlieben sehr individuell sind, kann ich nur raten diesem Buch eine Chance zu geben. Ca 19 € sind nicht ganz billig, aber für mich auf jedenfall der Qualität angemessen. Dazu mach ich die Nicht DinA4 Formate sehr gerne. Das Cover lässt sich zusätzlich toll gestalten! Und ja, durch das Weiß wird es leichter schmutzig, aber das gehört für mich zu einem Nature Journal dazu. Ich würde mich wünschen, dass es noch mehr Farben außer Gelb für den Einband geben würde und eine Version des Buches OHNE den Infoteil hinten, sodass mehr Papier drinnen ist. Insgesamt hat es wirklich das Potential zu meinem Lieblingsskizzenbuch zu werden.
