Still very useful, especially for a first time moms. It's like encyclopedia about babies! If you have a question, 99 out of 100 the answer is there. Babies grow and learn/do so many new things every month. This book is very good guide to what to expect from each month. You can flip to the page with your baby age and read about what your baby should do in that age. As all babies are different and the book address that in a very suggestive manner. Gives advises what to ask your pediatrician, what kind of food and when give to your baby, what type of vaccination is usually schedule for each month if any, and many many more useful information. Very good gift for a baby shower. I got the book for my self and there fore order used one, arrived in very good condition. Review: Great Reference Book - I read what to expect when you are expecting and thought it was the greatest pregnancy book ever. It was right on with all the things I was experiencing and explained all the things I had fears or concerns about and helped me to be more excited about the whole pregnancy. I was not disappointed with this book. It was just as good at helping me understand my baby's needs and why he was doing certain things and when. I would never have realized that by trying to sooth my son with every idea people threw my way when he was fussy, I was overdoing it and 'over stimulating' him. After a couple of really bad eveings, and some desperate reading, I found that by going from one trick to another it was working against the very effect I was going for. The book suggested just sticking to one thing that worked in the past like rocking and waiting it out for a while and to not give up on myself or my baby so quickly and move on to anther idea. This book helped me realized that everything I found to be frustrating or scary was perfectly normal and even better, my feeling frustrated or scared was a very normal feeling felt by most moms. If you ever think that maybe your not cutting it as a mom - and most new moms will from time to time - read this book and find that you are doing just fine!

Lifesaver
This is a must have for any first-time mom. With the invention of the Internet, it seems like the answers are a click away, so why do you need a book? However, I have gotten so much good advice, reassurance, and support from this book that I pack it up to take it on trips with my baby boy. It splits the first year up into months, with a section at the beginning of each month on developmental points. I liked getting affirmation that my child was ahead, on track, or behind, just so I knew what to expect/look to see him doing next. (If you read the What to Expect when You're Expecting, it follows the same format, so you'll immediately feel comfortable finding relevant information you need.) My baby's doctor would ask questions about my baby's milestones, and having the book around meant I knew what the pediatrician would ask before the survey. Also, this book agrees with my doctor, so when I can't contact him, say at 3:00 am, the book is a ready reference. I have given this book to new moms; I have already bought What to Expect: The Toddler Years. What a great purchase!

Prefer FIRST edition to this one.
The feature I liked the most about this volume was its compilation, at the beginning of the chapters, showing what a baby will be doing at various monthly stages. So at, say, 5 months, your baby 1) should be doing this, 2) likely will be doing this, 3) may be doing this, and 4) may even be doing this, etc. These lists were extremely helpful and, unless I've gone blind, which perhaps I have, they're not int he Second Edition. I got this for my son and his wife with the first baby, and kept extolling the virtues of these lists. Finally he said to me, "Mom, I don't see the lists." I then found a First Edition, used, and sent it to him. He likes it much better. Of course, it's fileld with great information, either one. But I wish they'd restore those lists. WHY, I wonder, did they remove them? I can't help but think perhaps (just perhaps) they were afraid of upsetting parents whose babies might be way off of the development curve. Is that too utterly paranoid of me in these, our strange, modern times?

Great for new parents! Best in the series
I hated all baby books and pregnancy books when I was pregnant - they all seemed overly sentimental and totally useless. Then a friend gave me this for the first year - SO incredibly helpful! I am a doctor, but still had so many questions after taking my baby home from the hospital. For the first 6 months, my husband and I would read this weekly. When my daughter went on crying jags, it would become part of our routine - feed, burp, swaddle, change, and read What To Expect in the First Year. It addresses everything and is very reassuring. The book is also very open minded and weighs the pros and cons to different schools of thinking. It offers you both sides, or several options for dealing with something, and then lets you decide. Some people like the cry it out method, some people hate it. This book talks about both and largely refrains from judgement. Without being useless! I found it truly helpful for all both random and very important questions. Best baby book you can buy! Good luck new parents!

Most useful baby book for a first-time mom
I had checked out this book from my local library, but after seeing how much useful information the book contained, I decided to buy it. I doubt I will get through the entire book before my baby is born, but I am glad that I will be able to refer to it whenever I need a basic question answered. So far, the chapters on "Buying for Baby" and "Your Newborn Baby" (which covers baby care) have been the most useful. Reading those chapters has assured me that I don't need to go nuts buying baby stuff and I won't break my baby. If you are a first-time mom, like I am, then you should definitely buy this book. You will get answers to most of your questions, the information will give you ideas about the questions you should ask your OB and pediatrician, and the baby care primer will make you feel more confident about your ability to care for your child. Good luck to all the new moms out there!

Extremely helpful!
A must have for sure. I bought this when I knew I was going to become a parent. I wanted to learn as much as before the due date. I kept it even after children grew older. It is such a great reference; I later gifted it a friend when she became pregnant! So, it can be a great gift too!

Might as well buy used
Bought a new hardcover copy for $10 extra and received what is obviously a used copy. It came wrapped and boxed nicely, however, 3 pages have someone’s underlining in it. Luckily, the text is still legible, but if I new I would receive a used copy anyway I would not have paid extra for the new hardcover version.

fantastic book!!!
This book was recommended to me by one of my friends and I must say it exceeded all my expectations. I've just had my first baby and I could find very very useful information on breastfeeding and all related issues/problems which any parent may face and its solutions/suggestions. Very easy to read, logical layout...month by month starting right from the beginning when your baby is born and the book takes you through each stage of baby development pointing out actual problems and solutions. I am very happy with this book, it made my life as a new mum much easier, with less sleepless nights, less worries and more joy of having a baby! Absolutely recommended!

Love to read month by month
I had What to Expect when you are expecting during pregnancy and liked to read month by month so I bought this one for the first year. It gives me a lot of answers to my questions and I am very happy with it. I will also buy the edition for the second year when the time comes.

What to expect the first year
I was complaining that babies don't come with manuals and then I found this book! Together with "What To Expect When You are Expecting" I found these the most useful pregnancy books. If you are looking for comprehensive practical information on your child's development, problems, how to do things, etc in the first year then this is a great book. It is more practical than touchy feely though so is less focused on the emotional or psychological side of things.

Very useful for first time parents
We bought this when our first child was born, it is sooooo useful. First child is always hard because we don't have experience. This book taught us a lot, for each phase. It kind point out the detail of everything. I would definitely recommend this to first time parents.
