Heavy grained leather says luxury, as the leather has to be patterned even before the shoe is cut out. Therefore you only see it used on high specification products. These brogues are a substantial pair of shoes and there are up to 100 different steps to make them. The Goodyear Welted construction clearly shows the lock stitch through the top and underneath of the sole. You can have these re-soled at a traditional cobblers if you need to. This traditional British method of stitching also improves the resistance to weather, as there is an extra strip of leather, the welt, which is stitched to the top and bottom of the shoe. Remember, of course, a leather shoe is never waterproof. The sole is leather and the heels are made of stacked leather with a full top layer in rubber. Then a steel quarter tip is hand screwed to the outer edge of the heel in the authentic manner. All this is to improve the longevity.
