What is the difference between light, medium and heavy clay bars

As the name states, each color or density of the clay is different for specified jobs. Light for light contamination, medium for medium contamination and heavy for heavy contamination. The heavier the clay the more of chance there is for you to marr and damage the paint. For optimal use of the clay bar, any bar medium and above should be followed by a Polish as to remove marring and scratching left by the clay bar. Clay bars are abrasive no matter how  lubrication you use and will almost always leave behind micro scratching. Hope this helps.

Question 2

The yellow clay bar didn't get paint scratches off. Does gray one work better for this?

Clay bars do not take paint scratches off.  They take off impurities above the paint surface.  A scratch is in/below the surface.  To remove those you will need cutting, polishing agents based on how deep the scratch is into the surface.

Question 3

Will this remove tar and asphalt sealant?  Has anyone had this problem?  I'm being told washing and buffing may not be enough to remove it.

This stuff will work after you get the largest accumulation of dirt and tar off. It's designed to be used on a smooth fine surface to shine the vehicle's finish. You may need a tar remover first, such as kerosene or a fine polishing compound.

Question 4

I have new headlights (plastic) that have overspray from car paint. Will this bar be suitable to remove without losing the shine and newness?

That is a great question. There are a couple of factors that are important in this scenario.  First, let me say that the Chemical Guys CLY 402 is a fantastic medium grade clay bar.Depending on much (heaviness) paint overspray is on the headlights this product may or may not be the best fit.  Using the clay bar appropriately, will not damage the plastic headlights.  The product is designed to remove contaminates, not create larger issues.The other factor is the condition of the headlights.  Over time the plastic can become porous, in which the overspray may become lodge in the small pockets.  It is difficult to remove with any clay bar.   I hope this helps in your decision.
