Is it safe to use for dental impressions for forensic analysis in a high school lab?

How many whole adult hand casts could you make with one box?

Most probably three or four possibly more, depending upon how closely the casting container is made and how far up the arm the casting is to be made. You have to be a bit careful of having the alginate too thin particularly at the edges where you transition from the casting to air. it can and will tear if it is too thin. You might be able to make a dozen or so casting if you simply paint the alginate onto The hand and then reinforce the cast with plaster of paris. I've heard of this method, but, have not tried it.

I want to make a mold of 16 different 4 year old's hands. How much of this stuff will I need if I'm using 1/2 gallon containers for each one?

Well if your using 1/2 gallon containers. Your mixture rate is 1:1 . that is 1 cup alja safe 1 cup water. So you need to probably use for each cast 3 to 4 cups alja safe and 3 to 4 cups water. 16 casts you would probably need about 9 pounds of alja safe.
