Best Dahmer film ever!
I love this film. I'm a huge fan of Carl Crew, he's a great actor.I already had the Brain Damage Films DVD copy, which looks like a VHS transfer.I just bought this as an upgrade. Personally, I highly prefer this Dahmer film over the 2002 version. Now they are making a new film, written by the guy who made the old comic books back in the day, with some Disney star playing the role of Dahmer. It's already cringe-worthy to me.I think Carl Crew did an incredible job depicting Dahmer. He is such an excellent, underrated actor.I highly recommend this film to anyone who is interested in Dahmer, or serial killers in general.

Probably the best film about Jeffrey Dahmer
"The Secret Life" is probably the best film about Wisconsin's own cannibal there is. It graphically details Jeffrey Dahmer's escapades from 1978 all the way to his arrest in 1991-- it just doesn't do it very seriously. The movie suffers from hokey acting, bad camera angles, poor quality 35mm film and a score that often is too loud and drowns out the dialogue. But in spite of all these flaws, the movie is, in all likelihood, the best portrayal of the Milwaukee monster I've seen, certainly better than "Raising Jeffrey Dahmer" and even better than the 2002 Jeremy Renner starring film titled "Dahmer."The reason I bought this DVD was for the special features listed on Amazon's page for it, which says it has an audio commentary and a featurette with Carl Crew. The audio commentary is on the DVD but there is no featurette with Carl Crew to speak of-- I'm not sure why that's listed on this page as a special feature. The audio commentary isn't very enlightening, it's the director/composer of the film and star Carl Crew mostly talking about how they were freaking out during production because they thought they were going to be putting out a Dahmer film next to maybe up to six other Dahmer films that Hollywood was supposedly producing at the time when in fact they were the only ones actually producing a film about Jeffrey Dahmer, which is why the film ultimately was rushed and a little slap-dash. I think in fact, there have only been four narrative movies about Jeffrey Dahmer to date, this film "The Secret Life," then 2002's "Dahmer," the idiotic 2006 film "Raising Jeffrey Dahmer" and 2010's comedy/horror "Dahmer VS Gacy," though I'm not sure that last one counts.I'm disappointed that there is no featurette with Carl Crew as listed on the Amazon's page for this DVD because I was really hoping for some introspection regarding this film-- there's some in the audio commentary but it doesn't tell you a whole lot other than that the filmmakers were on Maury Povich's show and that they ran into some financial problems after the film's Japanese backers pulled out or that there was another, unnamed director involved prior to filming who dropped out and that the director's chair was filled by the film's composer (of all people!). That said, the movie does the best it can with little to nothing. And while the acting (apart from Carl Crew as Dahmer, who is pretty straightfaced and not bad as Dahmer, even though he bears little more than a passing resemble to the serial killer) is bad, the movie's script is extremely solid and very, very true to the facts. I think one of the only times the movie 'makes something up' is when a priest crank calls Dahmer in a bar-- which was really just an excuse for a director cameo."The Secret Life," while horrific, is best viewed as some sort of sick comedy. When you watch it, you can't help but giggle at the death scenes as they're so over the top and hammy that they're just plain going to make you laugh. If the movie wasn't about Jeffrey Dahmer it could have been some comedy/horror film about a misfit serial killer and his dumb victims who you never really feel bad for. But sadly, it is true to the facts and truth is stranger than fiction and fact is more prominent than fantasy in this movie. The DVD package is nice, it comes in a white DVD plastic case, and the DVD label is cool with this cool 'worn videotape' look. Unfortunately the DVD menu misspells the main character's name as "'Jeffry' Dahmer!" I don't know how they overlooked this or approved the disc printing at all when the product was finalized unless it was some sort of practical joke. I really bought this movie because I wanted to gain some more insight about it, but found little in that and that's why I can only give it four out of five stars. I like the movie a lot, don't get me wrong, but it would be nice to see a future re-release of this film, maybe from Scream Factory on Blu-Ray. The movie itself is in 4:3 aspect ratio, which is a little strange because it was filmed in 35mm for theaters (though it never got a theatrical release and went straight to videotape in '93) and to the best of my knowledge it should be in at least the 16:9 format. The quality of the movie itself is decent, not perfect, there's a lot of grain and sometimes hairs on the picture but this does not detract from the viewing experience. All in all, this is a good movie to watch if you're familiar with the story of one of America's most notorious serial killers, but for your regular horror fan, it's not going to fulfill the need for gore or cheap scares. The movie's target audience is people who like biopics about serial killers, which, if you're reading this review, you probably you do. For the current price of $11.99, I'd say this DVD with its lack of many special features is a little on the steep side but I got it with a gift card I got for Christmas, so no harm, no foul. But if you're an aficionado of serial killers, it's definitely worth your money, so check it out!

Lol
This movie is hilarious!!! It's played out seriously by the actors and that's what makes it so funny. The main character Jeff is a psycho cannibal and overreacts to every situation. The best comparison to make are silent night deadly night part 2, troll 2, wishmaster 2. All of these films are not meant to be funny and that is why they are.

Great Movie.......
This movie is psychologically disturbing this is a horror movie that does not need extreme gore to be frightful.this jeffey dahmer movie is far superior than the remake. If u read the begining the director was on a budget, and jeffrey dahmer acts would of been to extreme to put on film, but this film was done with the right amount of gore and the story was pretty accurate, and again the director stated a little of the story was changed. To those who like paranormal activity, saw, and mainstream horror will not find anything to like here, stay away.To those who like movies like salo, tenderness of the wolves etc will like this film.

Good Price
Really good price considering when it came out, I've seen a little of the movie but not all but from what I've seen it isn't too bad. I can't wait to sit down and watch it.

Good independent horror/drama
This isn't a body count gore flick. Despite it being an unrated and cheap independent film on Dahmer, there isn't anything really graphic. However, it does have some body parts and blood. It suffers from some poor acting from some but not all of the cast, and a climax that I thought was just quickly and poorly done that just wasn't rewarding after watching the entire thing. However, it's a dark toned and somewhat depressing independent take on Dahmer. It does get a bit talky in parts, but I thought it was a well directed and done well overall. I also thought it was well scored. It concentrates on Dahmers character, and it doesn't follow the real story very well which may disappoint some. On YOUTUBE, this film was on a 1992 episode of Maury Povich as it caused controversy. It looks like it was shot on 16mm and it's very low budget, but the quality is the best that's available as of this time. I thought it still looked good.

An Engaging Study of Madness
There is no question, I would think, that Mr. Dahmer had some serious psychological problems that had permeated his adolescence and culminated in the horrific acts for which he was sentenced. This film, made when Mr. Dahmer was still alive in prison, is a very moving presentation of the inner workings of a mind seeking love but of a psyche wandering off track. This film is not apologetic, but it is a tragic tale. How can you not help but feel for someone so intense and lonely! -- The art of film gives us all a perspective on life that otherwise we would not have had. Art is a way to short-circuit life: you do not have to live it yourself to get beyond the limit. -- A very moving film; and a subject which is so difficult to accommodate. So well done.

Dahmer devil

strange but informative
Interesting film though hard to see through the corny 80s atmoss.the actor Carl crew gives a good but sometimes wooden performance, and he wears the same old pair of trainers with a hole in the bottom throughout the supposed 14 year order of events.can't see it having anything more than cult appeal, though I did think it gives a fairly decent portrayal of dahmer, and more accurate than the other later film in 2002,the apartment looks quite creepy and seems to do a good job at being more realistic in its overall setting.the killings are a bit over the top and has a particularly disturbing part were he's cradling a freshly boiled head like a baby.worth the watch
